Hagley Park is the largest urban open space (164.637 hectares)[1] in Christchurch, New Zealand, and was created in 1855 by the Provincial Government. According to the government's decree at that time, Hagley Park is reserved forever as a public park, and shall be open for the recreation and enjoyment of the public.[citation needed] Hagley Park is characterised by its trees and broad open spaces. Hagley Park was named after the country estate of Lord Lyttelton, who became chairman of the Canterbury Association in March 1850

New Zealand: Panicked scenes in Christchurch during Friday's mosque shootings

Footage recorded in and around Christchurch's North Hagley Park near the Masjid Al Noor Mosque on Friday shows the city on high alert and residents in a panicked state.
Armed police were patrolling the streets and the park following shootings at two mosques.
Officers can be heard telling bystanders to leave the area.
Police cars blockaded roads, while ambulances with sirens blaring hurried through the streets.
A total of 49 people were killed in the shootings, a further 48 were wounded.
The first report of an attack came from Masjid Al Noor Mosque during Friday prayers. The gunman then drove to the nearby Linwood Islamic Centre, where the second shooting occurred.
The main suspect, 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant, appeared in court on Saturday and was charged with murder. Two more individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack.
