Penang is the home to wonderful history, friendly locals and delicious meals. A definite attraction in northern Malaysia, Penang is represents a mixture of traditional and modern culture. What is really synonym with Penang is the food! Ask Malaysians and many would have traveled to Penang just to savour the delicious meals.
It was a pity that I only managed to feature a few places and I bet others will tell that one stall is better than the other. But you see, that IS Penang. Too much good food! We just cannot name the best. I personally had a great time eating Nasi Kandar, Roti Canai, Cendol, Curry Mee, Fried Oyster with Eggs and the famous Asam Laksa. An artistic tour around a Chinese temple in Penang
Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi of Penang, Malaysia is a clan temple that had belonged to the Khoo clan from over 650 years ago. One of the biggest clan temples in South East Asia, its architectual strutures and decorations attract visitors from around the world.

GEORGE TOWN: E' la capitale dello stato di Penang. Chiamata così in onore del re Giorgio III, la città si trova nella parte nord-orientale dell'isola di Penang e conta circa 160.000 abitanti. La città di George Town fu fondata nel 1786 dal capitano Francis Light, un alto funzionario della Compagnia Inglese delle Indie Orientali. L'intenzione era di creare una nuova base all'ingresso dello Stretto di Malacca. Light ottenne l'isola di Penang dal Sultano di Kedah ed iniziò a fortificare l'isola, costruendo Fort Cornwallis sulla punta nord-orientale dell'isola. Il forte fu il centro di aggregazione di una nuova stazione commerciale e così la popolazione dell'intera isola raggiunse i 12.000 abitanti nel 1804. Noi abbiamo divorato tutto quello che la seconda cucina di tutta la Malesia (dopo Melaka) è riuscita ad offrirci. Georgetown è collegato con la terraferma dal Penang Bridge (il più lungo del sud-est asiatico) e da traghetti che percorrono il canale, largo 3 km.

KUAN YIN TENG TEMPLE: in Lebhu Pitt si trova questo tempio, deidicato alla dea della misericordia, della fortuna, della pace e della fertilità. Costruito all'inizio del XIX secolo dai primi coloni Hokkien e cantonesi stabilitisi nel Penang, questo tempio non è grande ma riveste un'importanza essenziale per la comunità cinese.Sembra essere perennemente avvolto dal fumo proveniente dai forni situati all'esterno in cui i fedeli bruciano banconote, lettere e dai bastoncini d'incenso che i devoti agitano al suo interno.
HAINAN TEMPLE: Portato a termine nel 1895, è dedicato a Mar Chor, santo patrono dei naviganti. La caratteristica più importante di questo tempio è costituita dal magnifico cortile in pietra con colonne intagliate, dove le lanterne di carta rossa sono più numerose del solito. Questo sfondo color ardesia e rosso sembra fatto apposta per la scena dell'ultimo combattimento di un film di kung-fu.
KHOO KONGSI: E' una grande casa del clan cinese dei Khoo di George Town, caratterizzata da un'architettura molto ricca elaborata, segno della presenza dominante dei cinesi all'isola di Penang. Le case dei clan o clan halls in origine consistevano in edifici o complessi di più edifici organizzati, sostenuti e mantenuti da individui e famigli e facenti parte di un medesimo clan (i cinesi sono divisi per clan a seconda del loro cognome), in particolare tra quelli che si trovano in paesi lontani dalla Cina d'origine o che addirittura in Cina non sono nati o non hanno mai vissuto. (Naturalmente ci sono casi di omonima, nel caso del Khoo Kongsi i membri sono quelli originari dal villaggio di Sin Kang nella provincia Hokkien della Cina). Letteralmente il termine cinese kongsi significa compagnia o sala di incontro. Queste strutture svolgevano una serie di funzioni e di servizi, sia per le famiglie riunite nello stesso clan, sia per facilitare lo stringere di relazioni tra cinesi migranti, officiare alcune cerimonie civili e religiose, specialmente per quanto riguarda quelle connesse al culto degli antenati, ma anche per aiutare a intessere rapporti d'affari. La ricchezza e la struttura elaborata di un kongsi possono riflettere lo status di un particolare clan e il suo successo all'interno dell'economia locale, sicché l'edificio diventa anche un monumento di orgoglio che dà lustro all'intero clan.

Kek Lok Si temple, Penang, Malaysia: aerial views from a drone
The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple, the largest in Malaysia and an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists living in Southeast Asia. This entire complex of temples was built over a period from 1890 to 1930. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Rama VI with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the 37-metre-tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
