Japan Travel: Onuma Quasi National Park canoeing, fishing, camping. Hakodate, Hokkaido56
Onuma Quasi National Park is located only twenty kilometers north of Hakodate, Onuma Park (Onuma Koen) is known for its picturesque, island dotted lakes and majestic dormant volcano, Mount Komagatake(駒ヶ岳).
Onuma Park can be easily visited in either a day trip from Hakodate or on a stopover on a journey between Hakodate and Sapporo.
The park's most attractive area is positioned between the two lakes Onuma (large lake) and Konuma (small lake) and can be explored wholly on foot. Pleasant walking courses let you explore the lakes' peninsulas and islands, several of them are connected with each other by small bridges, in easy 15-60 minute walks.
It is also possible to rent bicycles (500 yen/per hour, 1000 yen/day). A cycling course leads around Lake Onuma (about 14 km), but follows the main road rather than the lakeshore for most of the distance. Yet, It is a nice way to explore the area.
During the warmer seasons there is also sightseeing boat tours offered every 40 minutes. It lastins about 30 minutes (1100 yen per person). Other activities to be enjoyed in Onuma Park include tennis, golf, canoeing, fishing and camping.

USA: NEW YORK: GIANT SQUID SPECIMEN GOES ON DISPLAY
English/Nat
The world's best-preserved specimen of a giant squid, the largest living invertebrate on Earth, has gone on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Giant squid live at least a 1-thousand 500 metres (one mile) below the ocean's surface and they have never been seen alive in their natural habitat.
The squid on display was found by a fisherman over a year ago in New Zealand and shipped to New York for research at the museum.
The American Museum of Natural History in New York has a newly preserved permanent resident -- an eight-metres (25 foot), 125 kilogrammes (250 pound) giant squid.
It's curators are proud of their display because nowhere else in the world is there such a perfect specimen of the largest living invertebrate on Earth.
And no one has ever seen the giant squid alive in its natural habitat -- 1-thousand 500 metres (one mile) beneath the ocean. It remains the stuff of nightmares and lurks as a sea monster in literature.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Of course, it doesn't just take Melville's magic words to describe one of the truly most magnificent and mysterious creatures on earth. The Giant Squid.
SUPER CAPTION: Michael J. Novacek, Provost and Senior Vice President, American Museum of Natural History
The squid, a mature male, was brought from New Zealand in 1998, where a fisherman accidentally found it in the fishing net.
It has the largest eyes in the animal kingdom, one eye is nine centimetres (six inches) across.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
One of the most distinctive features are the arms, there are 8 arms, and there are two tentacles. So when you stretch this out all together it's 25 feet in length. And the arms and the tentacles are equipped with suckers. And these suckers have a ring of sharp teeth around each sucker.
SUPER CAPTION: Neil H. Landman, Curator, Division of Invertebrate Zoology
Although the giant squid on display is dead and preserved in alcohol, it still provided quite a scare for those unveiling it.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
In some ways it's mean, it looks mean, but then in some ways it looks nice. We're not very sure.
SUPER CAPTION: Melissa Magazine, student, Museum School 44
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It looks like they could get killed easily because it's really soft and fragile and stuff.
SUPER CAPTION: Annie Grunwald, student, Museum School 44
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It looks pretty harmless...I wouldn't want to find that thing caught in my net if fishing.
SUPER CAPTION: Esme Hovekamp, student, Museum School 44
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Yeah, if I found that in my net I would, like, faint, like if it were alive, I would, like, be dead.
SUPER CAPTION: Melissa Magazine, student, Museum School 44
The squid will be on display for about two years, and then it will go to the museum's research departments for study.
The museum already has two life-size models of giant squid on view. One hangs from the ceiling opposite the real specimen and is a 105 year old papier mache model that is 14 metres (42) feet long.

TOKYO GAME SHOW Virtual Reality VR Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN #37
Tokyo Game Show is the ultimate event spotlighting the next year's upcoming video games and is held annually at Makuhari, Chiba, a 20 minute train ride from Tokyo Station. In this episode, I return to TGS after a year off to check out what's changed.
VIRTUAL REALITY
This seemed to be the real champion of this years event.
In 2013 SONY had a VR headset unit on display, but the games weren't very realistic. It was more of a monitor inside goggles to me.
This year, SONY showed that it has some serious chops in the VR field with it new VR unit. They let me have a go at a multi-player game.
LOVE LIVE
I tried out a new Japanese dance game where girls (or possibly confused boys) can become a cute idol and dance with their friends while playing a game using a sensor that registers foot steps.
To a popular idol tune, step into the circle when the beat comes your way. Miss it and your friends will probably pound on you for failing miserably. On this day though, I was with a bunch of guys who were just as confused as me. However, the game was rocking and a lot of fun.
The Most Amazing Booth Ever!
The Granblue Fantasy booth was absolutely gigantic!
Ridiculous!
It's a social media game that has taken off in a big way in Japan, making it's way to the international markets later this year.
I'm not sure how to play the game, but what I do know is that their booth was another world.
The centerpiece was a full sized ship where cosplayers could pose for photos, even up in the sails!
Of course there are so many other amazing booths to visit with a lot of new companies entering the gaming market like Amazon, Google, loads of Indie games from different Asian countries. Taiwan and Singapore had good showings. Even YouTube was on site showing off technology that allows gamers to live stream themselves playing, recording the action.
All in all, Tokyo Game Show was a massive success on the day I went. It's worth spending a day, sit down and try some games – the lines can be long. I had to wait 45 minutes for the Sony VR game, but it was really worth it!
See you next time TGS!

City tram: Kolkata
The Kolkata tram is a tram system in Kolkata, India, run by the Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC). It is currently the only operating tram network in India and the oldest operating electric tram in Asia, running since 1902.
Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly river, it is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India, while the Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port as well as its sole major riverine port. As of 2011, the city had 4.5 million residents; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 14.1 million, making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India. As of 2008, its economic output as measured by gross domestic product ranked third among South Asian cities, behind Mumbai and Delhi. As a growing metropolitan city in a developing country, Kolkata confronts substantial urban pollution, traffic congestion, poverty, overpopulation, and other logistic and socioeconomic problems.
In the late 17th century, the three villages that predated Kolkata were ruled by the Nawab of Bengal under Mughal suzerainty. After the Nawab granted the East India Company a trading license in 1690, the area was developed by the Company into an increasingly fortified mercantile base. Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah occupied Kolkata in 1756, and the East India Company retook it in the following year and by 1772 assumed full sovereignty. Under East India Company and later under the British Raj, Kolkata served as the capital of India until 1911, when its perceived geographical disadvantages, combined with growing nationalism in Bengal, led to a shift of the capital to New Delhi. The city was a centre of the Indian independence movement; it remains a hotbed of contemporary state politics. Following Indian independence in 1947, Kolkata—which was once the centre of modern Indian education, science, culture, and politics—witnessed several decades of relative economic stagnation. Since the early 2000s, an economic rejuvenation has led to accelerated growth.
As a nucleus of the 19th- and early 20th-century Bengal Renaissance and a religiously and ethnically diverse centre of culture in Bengal and India, Kolkata has established local traditions in drama, art, film, theatre, and literature that have gained wide audiences. Many people from Kolkata—among them several Nobel laureates—have contributed to the arts, the sciences, and other areas, while Kolkata culture features idiosyncrasies that include distinctively close-knit neighbourhoods (paras) and freestyle intellectual exchanges (adda). West Bengal's share of the Bengali film industry is based in the city, which also hosts venerable cultural institutions of national importance, such as the Academy of Fine Arts, the Victoria Memorial, the Asiatic Society, the Indian Museum, and the National Library of India. Though home to major cricketing venues and franchises, Kolkata differs from other Indian cities by giving importance to association football and other sports.

Sapporo snow festival and Mt. Moiwa
The Sapporo Snow Festival さっぽろ雪まつり Sapporo Yuki matsuri is a festival held annually in Sapporo, Japan over seven days in February. Currently, Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome are the main sites of the festival.
Every year the number of statues displayed is around 400 in total. In 2007, there were 307 statues created in the Odori Park site, 32 in the Satoland site and 100 in the Susukino site. The best place to view the creations is from the TV Tower at the Odori Park site.[3] Most of the statues are illuminated in the evening. The Sapporo Snow Festival Museum is located in the Hitsujigaoka observation hill in Toyohira-ku, and displays historical materials and media of the festival.
Mt. Moiwa (elev. 531 m), a sightseeing spot in central Sapporo, commands a splendid view. It is known for its natural splendour, including that seen in the primeval forest there. It's popular among tourists throughout the year for views of green leaves, autumnal colours and trees covered with snow.
The observatory deck at the summit commands a splendid view of central Sapporo, the Ishikari Bay and Mt. Shokanbetsu in Mashike. The view at dusk and in the early evening is romantic. The night view of central Sapporo, a carpet of lights, is breathtaking. To reach the summit, visitors can drive up Mt. Moiwa Sightseeing Road, climb any of four hiking trails, where visitors might encounter Yezo foxes, or ride a gondola that connects with a free shuttle bus to the top. Those interested in historical building shouldn't miss the Ogura Residence, near the gondola station at the foot of the mountain.

Things to see and do in Ueno (上野) Tokyo + History of Ueno
Ueno (上野) is a district in Tokyo's Taitō Ward, best known as the home of Ueno Park. Ueno is also home to some of Tokyo's finest cultural sites, including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Western Art, and the National Museum of Nature and Science, as well as a major public concert hall. Many Buddhist temples are in the area, including the Bentendo temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten, on an island in Shinobazu Pond. The Kan'ei-ji, a major temple of the Tokugawa shoguns, stood in this area, and its pagoda is now within the grounds of the Ueno Zoo. Nearby is the Ueno Tōshō-gū, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. Near the Tokyo National Museum there is The International Library of Children's Literature. Just south of the station is the Ameya-yokochō, a street market district that evolved out of an open-air black market that sprung up after World War II. Just east is the Ueno motorcycle district, with English-speaking staff available in some stores.
Ueno is part of the historical Shitamachi (literally low city) district of Tokyo, a working class area rather than where the aristocrats and rich merchants lived. Today the immediate area, due to its close proximity to a major transportation hub, retains high land value but just a short walk away to the east or north reveals some of the less glitzy architecture of Tokyo.
Ueno Station is the nearest train station and is operated by JR East.
Ueno Park and Ueno Station are also home to a large percentage of Tokyo's homeless population. Though nearly invisible in other parts of Tokyo, the homeless population in Ueno can be found sleeping or communing in large numbers around the ike (ponds) of this district.
