Places to see in ( Hungerford - UK )
Places to see in ( Hungerford - UK )
Hungerford is a historic market town and civil parish in Berkshire, England, 8 miles west of Newbury, 9 miles east of Marlborough, 30 miles northeast of Salisbury and 67 miles west of London. The Kennet and Avon Canal passes through the town from the west alongside the River Dun , a major tributary of the River Kennet. The confluence with the Kennet is to the north of the centre whence canal and river both continue east. Amenities include schools, shops, cafés, restaurants, and facilities for the main national sports. The a railway station is a minor stop on the London to Exeter (via Taunton) Line.
Hungerford is a slight abbreviation and vowel shift from a Saxon name meaning 'Hanging Wood Ford'. The town’s symbol is the six-pointed star and crescent moon. The place does not occur in the Domesday Book of 1086, but certainly existed by 1173. By 1241, it called itself a borough. In the late 14th century, John of Gaunt was medieval lord of the manor and he granted the people the lucrative fishing rights on the River Kennet.
The noble family of Walter Hungerford, 1st Baron Hungerford originated from the town (c. 1450–1450), although after three generations the title passed to Mary, Baroness Hungerford who married Sir Edward (afterwards Lord) Hasting and the family seat moved to Heytesbury, Wiltshire.
During the English Civil War, the Earl of Essex and his army spent the night here in June 1644. In October of the same year, the Earl of Manchester’s cavalry were also quartered in the town. Then, in the November, the King’s forces arrived in Hungerford on their way to Abingdon.
During the Glorious Revolution of 1688, William of Orange was offered the Crown of England while staying at the Bear Inn in Hungerford. The Hungerford land south of the Kennet was for the centuries, until an 18th-century widespread growth in cultivation the area, in Savernake Forest.
St. Lawrence's parish church stands next to the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was rebuilt in 1814–1816 by John Pinch the elder in Gothic Revival style and refurbished again in the 1850s. In the late 19th century, two policeman were shot by poachers in Eddington. Their memorial crosses still stand where they fell.
Hungerford is on the River Dun. It is the westernmost town in Berkshire, on the border with Wiltshire. It is in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The highest point in the entire South East England region is the 297 m (974 ft) summit of Walbury Hill, centred 4 miles (7 km) from the town centre. The Kennet and Avon Canal separates Hungerford from what might be described as the town's only suburb, the hamlet of Eddington.
Hungerford is situated on several transport routes, of both historic and current importance, including the M4 motorway (junction 14), the Old Bath Road (A4), and the Kennet and Avon Canal (opened 1811). It also has a railway station on the Reading to Taunton line; a reasonable rail service to Newbury, Reading and London means that the Hungerford has developed into something of a dormitory town which has been slowly expanding since the 1980s. Many residents commute to nearby towns such as Newbury, Swindon, Marlborough, Thatcham and Reading.

Chagford Show 16th August 2018
The Chagford Agricultural and Horticultural Show is held on the third Thursday in August. Just a few miles from the A30 at Whiddon Down, but the narrow road does get rather congested, so be prepared to queue for a while as this show is very popular, located as it is in the glorious Devon countryside. Plenty of food and drink outlets including a beer tent, located next to the ever popular outdoor music stage. The entrance fee this year (2018) was £9 for adults, but I expect it will be increased next year! Still worth the money to attend one of the best little shows in the West Country (we travelled up from Cornwall).
The Cauldron is a go!

The Good, the Bad & the Queen is an album by an originally unnamed English alternative rock supergroup now officially referred to as The Good, The Bad & The Queen, comprising Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Simon Tong and Tony Allen and produced by Danger Mouse. The album was released in January 2007.[12][13] The album debuted at number two in the UK Albums Chart and was certified Gold in the UK within days of its release despite little media recognition and airplay.[14] In the United States, the album entered the Billboard 200 at No. 49. In October 2018, it was confirmed that the band's official name is The Good, the Bad & the Queen after they announced their second album, Merrie Land.[15]
It is stated that the record is, in a sense, a concept album, as its songs are all themed around modern life in London.[16] It was described by Albarn as a song cycle that's also a mystery play about London in an interview with Mojo.

Although The Good, The Bad & The Queen was first reported as a solo album by Albarn with Danger Mouse producing, NME revealed in late July 2006 that the solo project had been switched to a new group formed by Albarn.[17] The band, which formed in 2006, released their first single, Herculean on 30 October 2006. The single followed the band's appearance at the BBC's Electric Proms season at the redeveloped Roundhouse in Camden on 26 October, during which they performed the entire album.[17] Three warm-up gigs in East Prawle at the Pig's Nose Inn,[18] Ilfracombes Marlboro Club and The Exeter Cavern Club preceded their gig on the BBC's Electric Proms, where the album was performed in order with two other songs inserted, Intermission Jam and Mr. Whippy; the latter was a B-side for Herculean. The band performed four tracks from the album at Abbey Road Studios on 13 December 2006, during a recording session for Live from Abbey Road.RE SPRINGS ))
Devon Ostrom - Graffiti Sessions
Devon Ostrom's contribution on December 5th 2014 at Graffiti Sessions (Central Saint Martins).
The Graffiti Sessions was set up to identify new horizons for future city strategies on graffiti and street arts and opportunities and challenges for evolving creative practice, towards places that are both safe and sociable.
The event comprised a three-day series of talks, workshops and panel debates exploring the evolving roles of graffiti and street art in the urban environment and gathered a wide group of experts to debate issues surrounding graffiti.
The ambition is to challenge deep-rooted preconceptions and speculation that have until now limited the progress of both policy and practice related to street art and graffiti. Bringing together key institutions and individuals, the project initiated an open and sustainable discussion forum for the exchange of a broad scope of viewpoints and positions on street art and graffiti, and for the evaluation of their impacts on the quality of life for urban communities.
Graffiti Sessions was hosted by UCL Urban Lab, the Graffiti Dialogues Network at Central Saint Martins (University of the Arts London) and Southbank Centre.
Pieces- Rebecca Cornish Original Song
I woke up today, didn't know my own name.
I didn't even recognise my own face.
A million others fall around me.
Pale shadows in the darkness
Crying their souls out.
But I won't let that define
What I am inside.
All the voices in my mind
Trying to define what I am inside.
You threw up the pieces
They'll never all land back in place.
A puzzle left half finished
A masterpiece never completed
You chewed me up and spat me out
'Cause I wasn't quite to taste.
I woke up today
I didn't want to know my name.
I hate what I've become.

More than 140 people have been killed in a devastating flood in Russia
More than 140 people have been killed in a devastating flood in Russia's southern Krasnodar region. It's the worst of its kind in nearly a century, and the death toll continues to rise.
Five people were electrocuted as an electricity transformer fell into the water, while many more drowned. Russia's Interior Ministry has confirmed a total 141 deaths, but that number is likely to rise.
In the district alone, at least 130 bodies have been found, the Interior Ministry reports. Two more have died in Novorossiysk, and nine more in the Gelendzhik district. A 10-year-old child was among the victims.
Up to 13,000 people have been affected by the disaster. A state of emergency has been declared in the cities of Krymsk, Novorossiysk, and Gelendzhik. The affected area is large and the damage widespread. Part of the Northern-Caucasus railroad has also been washed out.
Entire city streets have been completely submerged after torrential rain storms Friday, with the Krymsky district taking the worst of the floods, according to Governor of the Krasnodar region Aleksandr Tkachyov: Gelendzhik is in better condition, there's almost no water left there.
The speed of the flood was also shocking, carrying away not only homes, but 16-ton trucks as well. One driver said his truck was literally carried tens of meters by the waters.
In a separate incident, a nine-year-old girl was ripped from her mother and sister's arms by the force of the current.
Krasnodarsky Region authorities have declared July 9 a day of mourning.
Eyewitnesses also claim a 7-meter wave struck Krymsk in the middle of the night. The wave came down from the mountains, they say. The reasons are unknown, but one of the possible explanations, widely circulating in social networks, is that the water was discharged from reservoirs situated in the mountains. The other is that the wave was caused by excessive rain.
Anna Kovalyovskaya, whose parents are currently in the flood zone, says that local residents are expressing doubts that a reportedly 7-meter wave could have been caused by the rain storms alone.
It all happened during the night. People just ran from their homes, because there was a huge wave of water, nobody warned them. Two-story houses were flooded up to the second floor. The water came on very fast. It wasn't rain.
I don't know if this is official information or not, but in the city they are saying that they opened the water reservoir in the mountains above the city. That's where the wave came from. In the city all of a sudden there was 7 meters of water. There was certainly a large storm beforehand, but the water came on so quick that in 15 minutes everything was flooded, Kovalyovskaya told the Russian News Service.
The Emergencies Ministry says no water drain from reservoirs has been registered. The wave may have been caused by rain waters going down the mountains or rivers breaking the banks, they added.
The region's reservoirs are never full as there are waters shortages, says Vladisvlav Bolov, a chief officer at the ministry. So the water draining theory is nonsense.
Local authorities deny draining the local water storage and insist it is too far away from the town of Krymsk to pose any danger to it. They also refute allegations no warning was sent to the locals.
They just did not want to leave their homes, Anna Minkova, the Krasnodarsky Region's press secretary, told the Echo Moskvy radio station.
One third of Krymsk is still submerged, with the water only receding in certain areas, complicating rescue efforts. Rescuers have already retrieved over 6,000 survivors from rooftops and trees.
The flooding occurred in the aftermath of a giant storm that swept through the region. The region experienced almost half a year's worth of rainfall over the last two days.
The most heavily affected areas are along the Russian Black Sea coast, which bore the brunt of the torrential waters as they rushed out to sea.
An Emergencies Ministry plane took helicopters and rescue teams to Anapa in order to join the rescue and repair efforts already underway in the region. Over 1,000 rescue officers are working at the scene.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin as well as Emergency Minister Vladimir Puchkov and the Minister of Regional Development Oleg Govorun have visited the affected area.
