History of the Market
The Hamilton Farmers' Market was originally founded in 1837, at the corner of York & James Streets. Andrew and Mary Miller transferred a small parcel of land to the President and Board of Police of the Town of Hamilton, to be utilized specifically for a Market.
The Market has been in its current location next to the Hamilton Public Library since August 1980. The modern architectural design provides a mezzanine level and lower level, consisting of 176 stands and approximately 80 stallholders. All indoors!
There are rows of farm fresh produce from sun-ripened tomatoes, fresh picked apples, nuts, dried fruit, bright coloured flowers, lettuce crisp and fresh, the choicest cuts of meats, fish - the finest from the sea, fresh baked goods, tangy cheeses, tropical fruits and even coffee and donuts.
Specialty products are also imported from many other countries around the world. This excellent product mix is offered each market day and attracts regular customers from the local community and tourists from all over the world.

Thursday: 7 am -- 6 pm
Friday: 8 am -- 6 pm
Saturday: 6 am -- 6 pm
The Market is closed on Mondays, Wednesdays, Sundays and all statutory holidays.

Today I went to the Hamilton Farmer's Market with my friend Lisa. I have to be honest, I thought there would be more local produce, but it just wasn't so. The Brantford Farmer's Market seems to be a much better option if looking for local, seasonal produce (with no stickers).

The History of the Hamilton Farmers' Market
The Hamilton Farmers' Market was originally founded in 1837 is located within a large multi-faceted complex in downtown Hamilton, Ontario called Lloyd D. Jackson Square on the corner of James Street & York Boulevard. It is an indoor market known well by locals for its variety of foods and products, produced both locally and from around the world. In 2007 a proposal of $5.1-million for renovation was made and a suitable location for the Market, during the renovations, to move to is being sought.
The Hamilton Farmers' Market is both a tradition and an institution in the city. The Hamilton Farmers' Market was originally founded in 1837, at the corner of York & James Streets. Andrew and Mary Miller transferred a small parcel of land to the President and Board of Police of the Town of Hamilton, to be utilized specifically for a Market.
The details of the land transfer are murky. The history of the Hamilton Farmers' Market, Michael Quigley's On the Market published by the Head of the Lake Historical Society in 1987 says, The origins of the markeet lie in a tangled swamp of land speculation deals, political rivalries, sharp practices and legal chicanery among the principals, many of them revered founding fathers of Hamilton.
The Market has been in its current location next to the Hamilton Public Library since August 1980. All indoors!
In 2011, the market was completely renovated and now features: A community gathering place that has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Wide mix of quality, affordable local produce and culturally diverse products from nearly 70 vendors. Selection of fresh foods prepared onsite. A community kitchen for cooking demonstrations and events Improved energy efficiency and accessibility. Fully restored Birks clock hanging proudly in the centre of the market.
