How is a Candy Cane Made? - Hammond's Candy Factory Tour - Denver, Colorado
We spent a delicious afternoon surrounded by sweets made by the experts at Hammond's Candies. One of the best factory tours in the US, this shop still makes candy by hand. The candy canes are created in a multi step process, with each candy maker responsible for their own candy from start to finish. After creating the colored shell and forming it into an evenly rolled sheet, they use a machine to twist and pull the filling, which is where the flavor is added. Next they wrap the shell around the filling and use their warming table to roll it into a long snake shape. Finally they cut the candy and bend the top into the classic candy cane shape. The candy hardens quickly, so they have to work fast. These are definitely the best candy canes we have ever had!

Picking Fruit & Eating Pies - Why is it called Capitol Reef National Park? - Utah
We had a wonderful day exploring Capitol Reef National Park this October. After hanging out in the visitors center, our little junior rangers knew how this famous national park got its name. Then we were off to explore the petroglyphs, historic district, fruit orchards and pie stand. As with all of the national parks in Utah, this spot had its own distinct beauty and character and we would love to visit again!

This week, we visited our 43rd state capitol in Denver, visited the Denver Zoo, visited the US Mint where we saw thousands of pennies being made, hiked the Red Rocks, saw how candy canes are made at Hammond's Candy, and tried to keep warm. Today, we went indoor skydiving which was a blast. Tomorrow, we leave Denver for Colorado Springs. We plan on being in Colorado for about 10 more days before we move on to Wyoming, our 45th state!
