Living room area at Samode Haveli - Jaipur, Rajasthan
View of the interiors at the living room area in Samode Palace in Rajasthan.
Samode Palace, Samode Haveli and Samode Bagh (Garden) are heritage monuments and structures built by the noble feudatory with the hereditary title of 'Maha Rawal' or 'Maha Saheb’ of the Amber and Jaipur principality in Rajasthan, India. All three have rich history of several hundred years and display a fusion of Mughal and Rajasthani art and architecture. They are now part of the Heritage group of hotels under the flagship name of “Samode” that are run by the hereditary owners of these structures. The Samode Palace is located 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Jaipur city, the Samode Haveli is close to Jaipur (centrally located within city limits, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) away from the city railway station) and the Samode Bagh or Garden, 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the palace which is also run as a luxury hotel.
Many Hindi feature films have been pictured with the settings of the palace. The 1984 American HBO TV serial adaptation of the Raj-romance novel The Far Pavilions was also filmed in the palace precincts and starred Ben Cross, Amy Irving, Omar Sharif and Christopher Lee.

Shekhawati - The Fresco Capital of India
Shekhawati in Northern Rajasthan (to the west of Jaipur) is a region widely famed as world's largest art gallery.
Shekhawati was founded by MaharanaShekhaji, a descendent of the illustrious Khachawaha Rajput clan of Amer (Jaipur) in the 15th century.
According to a story, MokulJi was a 15th century chieftain of Amer. He was without a son. In those days, it was almost sinful for a ruler to die without a heir. Having heard a lot about the miraculous powers of a Sufi saint, Sheikh BurhanChisthi, MokulJi and his wife decided to make a visit to the holy man. With the blessing of the Sheikh, a son was born to the Rajput couple and was named Shekha, after the name Sufi Saint. In the 18th century, the descendants of MaharaoShekhaJi had established a vast territory on both sides of the Aravali.
Sardul Singh had become a powerful thakur of the region in 1750s. Shekhawati was flourishing at that time. There were many forts and palaces covered with frescoes. The capital was at Jhunjhunu. After Sardul Singh's death in 1712 AD, the territory was divided among his five sons. Nawal Singh, his third son founded Nawalgarh and Mandawa and made them as the most prosperous towns within Shekhawati region.
From the 19th century, a number of Marwari merchants got attracted into these towns. These were the meeting points of camel caravans from West and Central Asia to India and China. Trade in opium, cotton and spices flourished. The Marwari merchants not only built splendid havelis but also decorated them with beautiful frescoes. These havelis were like fortified houses built around an inner courtyard. Marwaris also patronised building many temples, gardens, baolis and dharmasalas for the people.
However, as time progressed, the silk routed faded and a new form of trade evolved in Indian landscape with the rise of East India Company. More stress was laid on ports of Kolkata (Calcutta) and Mumbai (Bombay). By 1830s, the desert towns of Shekhawati lost their business potential. Marwaris started leaving for Calcutta and Bombay to try their luck. In these colonial cities they carved a niche for themselves in business, but they did not forget their native land.
They kept coming to their homeland and commissioned local artisans to decorate their havelis with beautiful frescoes.
The frescoes of Shekhawaiti are unique in themselves, and are a fusion of Mughal miniature and Hindu subjects, mainly themes revolving around Lord Krishna and Radha and their rasa. There are also scenes of daily life and later ones depict British subjects and 20th century technological innovations.
