Alibaba launches its first self-service store in Hangzhou
The Chinese e-retailing giant Alibaba has launched its first self-service store in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province. This type of shopping not only saves time for customers but also reduces the cost for merchants. Jack Ma recently announced that in the next few years, he would open nearly 10,000 unmanned stores within China.
How can Alibaba and others accomplish their dream of opening up thousands of unmanned stores in China? We turn to our panel to find out: Dr. Jay Huang, the founding partner of Jadestone Capital and former managing director of Intel China; Liu Baocheng, dean of the Center for International Business Ethics at the University of International Business and Economics; and Casey Rae, adjunct professor of Communication, Culture & Technology at Georgetown University.

Hangzhou's Hefang Street
Hefang Street / 河坊街, once called Taiping Street, dates back to the time South Song Dynasty when Hangzhou was the capital city. In 1152, General Zhang Jun (张俊) was conferred the title of “Qinghe County King”. In order to highlight his high status, Zhang Jun began to build his mansion around Taiping Street. People called this site as Qinghe Fang and renamed Taiping Street as Qing He Fang Street. During the South Song Dynasty, Hefang Street had been a rather prosperous business site and the center of culture and politics. It is said that Zhang Jun once invited Emperor Gaozhong to have an unprecedented feast of China’s history in Qinghe Street and the menu became today’s Hangzhou Dishes.
Nowadays, Hefang Street is the most famous and the only well-preserved ancient street in Hangzhou. Many famous century-old shops are located in this ancient street, such as Wangxingji Fan Store, Zhangxiaoquan Scissors, Wanlong Ham Stack, Huqingyutang Pharmacy, Baohetang Pharmacy, Zhuangyuan House, Wangruixing, Yiyuanjindian, Jingyangguan and Sheep Soup Restaurant among others.

I took a tour around the Yiwu Industrial Trade City - the largest wholesale market in the world. People come here from every country to buy goods to export. 5.5 million square meters, 7km long, this market is beyond giant. And it's all one interconnected building. I explored it for a day with Collin Abroadcast, a fellow market fanatic. From Christmas decorations to children's toys to hardware and tools, we found a bunch of stuff that blew our minds.

I am not big fan of musical fountains, but what they did in Hangzhou is great. Noozles are moving and nicely syncronized with music. Interesting was MS Windows jingles between songs.
