Great views of the Business District, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rocks, Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, then plowing through the waves as the sea gets slightly rough around Sydney Heads. And finally, enjoy the relaxing Sunday morning atmosphere at Manly Wharf, the Corso and Manly beach before heading back.

Hidden Gems of Sydney - Ferry from Circular Quay to Cockatoo Island
Cockatoo Island is one of the hidden gems of Sydney. It’s not often visited by tourists - mainly by Sydney-siders. For those working in the city it’s an easy round trip over the lunch hour. Of course the destination is not the only reason for going; the journey there and back is one of the many beautiful harbour trips available by public transport in Sydney.
Today we’re catching a bus and train from home to Circular Quay. There we’ll meet my wife’s friend, and then catch a ferry to Cockatoo Island. The return journey is direct from Cockatoo Island to Barangaroo Wharf, and then a short walk to catch a bus back home again.
We’re senior citizens, so the entire trip, all on public transport, costs just $2.50 each. For others I’m guessing the ferry from Circular Quay to Cockatoo Island and return would be about $10.
It’s wheelchair friendly except for the section from Cockatoo Island wharf up to the top of the island. You might also find this walk hard going if your legs are not too strong. However there is plenty to explore on the lower level for those like me who didn’t listen to their father when he said, “Whatever you do, don’t get a motorbike.”

You’ll need an Opal Card for swiping on and off each leg of your journey. Buy these at any newsagent and many other places around tourist areas.

Early on in the 19th century, Henry Gilbert Smith, an English businessman living in Sydney, saw that Manly - with an ocean beach on one side and fine sandy cove on the other - could provide a great watering place for the people of Sydney, as Brighton did for Londoners.
In 1855, Smith had a pier constructed a little east of the Manly Wharf, the Pier Hotel was built and The Corso was cleared linking the harbour with the ocean beach.
Smith encouraged the growth of a ferry service to Manly. Excursion trips were available.
By 1856 a daily ferry service was in place

Just weeks after a wallaby made headlines for hopping along the Sydney Harbour Bridge, another marsupial has been fished out of Sydney Harbour after it was spotted by Manly Ferry staff.
The wallaby was spotted swimming in the water about 50m from the shore at Manly Wharf, shortly after 7pm yesterday.
Shocked onlookers gathered at the nearby jetty as crew carried out a dramatic rescue, which involved looping a rope around the exhausted animal’s body before hauling it aboard.
