OBX Outer Banks Waves On the Beach Kitty Hawk North Carolina
The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.

Storm Surge & Erosion in Outer Banks From Maria
(27 Sep 2017) Maria regained strength and became a hurricane again Wednesday, pushing water over both sides of North Carolina's Outer Banks and taking its time to slowly turn away from the U.S. Atlantic coast.
No injuries have been reported, but the surge of ocean water washed over eroded beaches, flooding properties and state Highway 12, the only road through the narrow barrier islands of Hatteras and Ocracoke.
No ferries were moving, cutting off access to Ocracoke, and with the highway flooded at high tide, any travel on Hatteras remains hazardous, Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said in an email. He said the worst problems were on Hatteras Island, where more than 10,000 visitors left under an evacuation order, but hundreds of local residents were allowed to stay.
The National Hurricane Center said an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft measured Maria's top sustained winds at near 75 mph (120 kmh), with higher gusts. Its center was about 165 miles (265 kilometers) off Cape Hatteras at 11 a.m.
While Maria's most punishing hurricane-force winds remained offshore, tropical storm-force winds extended for as much as 230 miles (370 kilometers) from the center, churning up the surf on both sides of the islands. The hurricane's forward speed is just 6 mph (9 kph), so the storm was lingering before swinging out to sea.
On Hatteras, a fine rain fell Wednesday, with patches of blue sky occasionally showing through. Police set up a check point to block all traffic except for residents and reporters. As the winds picked up, waves crashed up to and beyond ocean-front homes between the communities of Rodanthe and Avon, where the water has washed under waterfront homes and onto side streets since Tuesday at high tide.

Duck, North Carolina - Outer Banks
WATCH IN 1080P. Welcome to the Town of Duck, a tranquil seaside village, located just past Southern Shores and stretching north to the Currituck County line. From simple beginnings it has developed into one of the most popular resort destinations on the East Coast.
Duck is known for its quaint, walk-able village center, miles of bike paths, original restaurants and shops, a soundfront park and a waterfront boardwalk.
Visit for more information.
Duck's main attraction is almost seven miles of clean, wide beaches. Barely a mile wide, this ribbon of sand is influenced by both the ocean and sound. Homes are clustered in neighborhoods that each have beach access and make it pedestrian and bike friendly. Duck has consistently ranked high on the Travel Channel's America's Best Beaches list.
The town park is located right in the heart of Duck and is host to summer events, concerts and a nationally-known jazz festival. One of its most popular features is the boardwalk along the Currituck Sound which now extends almost the length of the village; it's a lovely way to enjoy the maritime forest and willow marsh while easily accessing many shopping and dining opportunities.
Guests in Duck enjoy first rate shops, galleries, restaurants and recreational amenities. Since most stores are locally owned and operated, they are unique in character and offer original goods. Duck is also considered one of the top food destinations on the Outer Banks. From gourmet coffee shops to waterfront dining and great family fare, there is something for everyone in Duck.
