Waimea Valley Oahu, Hawaiian Culture, A Makahiki Celebration
- Waimea Valley, Hawaiian Culture, A Makahiki Celebration.
The Makahiki festival was celebrated in three phases. The first phase was a time of spiritual cleansing and making hoʻokupu, offerings to the gods. The Konohiki, a class of royalty that at this time of year provided the service of tax collector, collected agricultural and aquacultural products such as pigs, taro, sweet potatoes, dry fish, kapa and mats. Some offerings were in the form of forest products such as feathers. The Hawaiian people had no money or other similar medium of exchange. These were offered on the altars of Lono at heiau - temples - in each district around the island. Offerings also were made at the ahupuaʻa, stone altars set up at the boundary lines of each community.
All war was outlawed to allow unimpeded passage of the image of Lono. The festival proceeded in a clockwise circle around the island as the image of Lono (Akua Loa, a long pole with a strip of tapa and other embellishments attached) was carried by the priests. At each ahupuaʻa (each community also is called an ahupuaʻa) the caretakers of that community presented hoʻokupu to the Lono image, a fertility god who caused things to grow and who gave plenty and prosperity to the islands.
The second phase was a time of celebration: of hula dancing, of sports (boxing, wrestling, sliding on sleds, javelin marksmanship, bowling, surfing, canoe races, relays, and swimming), of singing and of feasting. One of the best preserved lava sled courses is the Keauhou Holua National Historic Landmark.[2]
In the third phase, the waʻa ʻauhau — tax canoe — was loaded with hoʻokupu and taken out to sea where it was set adrift as a gift to Lono.[3] At the end of the Makahiki festival, the chief would go off shore in a canoe. When he came back in he stepped on shore and a group of warriors threw spears at him. He had to deflect or parry the spears to prove his worthiness to continue to rule.

Discover why the six Islands of Aloha are home to treasures unlike any other on earth: The dramatic cliffs of the Napali Coast on Kauai. The vibrant shores of Waikiki Beach on Oahu. The miles of white sands of Papohaku Beach on Molokai. The dolphin friendly waters of Hulopoe Bay on Lanai. The summit of Haleakala on Maui. The primal energy of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. It won’t be easy choosing which island to visit on your first trip to Hawaii, but you’ll find there are no wrong answers.
You’ll likely begin your adventure at Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on Oahu. This is Hawaii's major airport, serving as the entry point for most of Hawaii's visitors. All major domestic carriers and many international carriers serve Oahu, so you can get here from just about anywhere. There are also direct flights from the U.S. mainland to Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii Island, but for the most part, you may need to connect through Oahu to get to the neighbor islands including Lanai and Molokai.
Then breathe deep. Smell the fresh plumeria in the air. Visit the historic landmarks of Hawaii and learn about the rich culture of the islands. Explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, from hidden beaches to small towns that you won’t find on a postcard. Learn to surf, snorkel or kayak and earn your Hawaii suntan. And don’t forget to go to an authentic luau where you can get a taste of Hawaiian culture and watch the art of the hula. You’ll find the itineraries on Hawaii are endless. From romantic escapades to family fun; from whale watching to walking on a volcano; you can do it all or you can simply sit back and do nothing. Explore Hawaii’s six unique islands and you’re sure to find your first trip to Hawaii won’t be your last. Learn more about things to do, activities and shopping in Hawaii.

Big Island Hawaii
Amazing Diverse Landscapes of the Big Island of Hawaii
Me and my hubby were amazed while driving around the island, it only takes about 6-7 hrs to drive around the whole island but the landscape changes so diversely its almost unbelievable. Waikoloa in the west is one of the driest cities in the US receiving about 10 inches of rain while 2 hours to the east Hilo is one of the wettest cities in the US, receiving more 130 inches of rain per year, with lava fields, green, black and white beaches, rainforests, valleys, arid desserts , alpine climate on Mauna Kea and one of the earth's most active volcano- Kilauea.
So yea we definitely loved our trip to the Big Island, Hawaii :) ALOHA!

Island Hopping in Hawaii
Hawaii
For many travelers, choosing just one Hawaiian island to visit is not easy. The way to solve the dilemma is to take a multi-island Hawaii vacation. While the majority of all travelers to Hawaii visit Oahu, many continue on to experience Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island called Hawaii.
Each island is distinct and offers a unique slice of Hawaiian life that’s worth the visit and island hopping is easy! The hard part is to decide what islands are best for you and your family.
OAHU ~ This small island is where you find Honolulu, the capital of our 50th state. Oahu is known as “The Gathering Place”. Here you will find the USS Arizona Memorial. Be sure to visit this peaceful and emotional tribute to those who died in service to our country.
Waikiki Beach is popular for a reason, it is amazingly beautiful! No wonder this was the first area of Hawaii to be developed into a vacation destination for main landers. Here you will find beautiful historic hotels as well as new resorts with everything a family can enjoy.
MAUI ~ This gorgeous island is where you can find brilliant tropical scenery and prime beach location resorts. This is a peaceful island where you can enjoy the serene tropical forests and quiet beaches. In winter even the humpback whales come to visit and play in the waters right off beach. You can see them breaching and even hear their songs while you snorkel or scuba dive.
KAUAI ~ Nicknames “The Garden Island”, Kauai is green and flourishing with lush flora from the mountain to the ocean. There are more than 50 miles of white sand beaches- more beach per mile than any other island in Hawaii. A must see is Waimea Canyon with 3,000 foot towering mountain cliffs of Na Pali Coast. This might look familiar from the Jurassic Park movie shots coming over the water toward land.
Hawaii ~ aka “The Big Island” is the most diverse island in the chain. Eight of the world’s 13 climate zones exist here. You will find flowing lava deserts, lush jungles and snowcapped mountains, and beaches that are black, green and white. Be sure to rent a car and take advantage of the roads that hug the coast for dramatic views of crashing waves. You will also want to drive across the middle of the island from Kona to Hilo. You will be driving in a desert between the 2 “dormant” volcanos, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
No visit to the Hawaiian islands is complete without a genuine luau. You can find several to choose from on each island. Be sure to not miss this experience.
If you can’t decide which islands are the best for you then see them all with a cruise around all the islands. A 7-night cruise will stop for a day or 2 at each island giving you the opportunity to see which one your favorite is. You can add a hotel package before or after your cruise to enjoy even more time in America’s Paradise!
