It contains a relic, the Moi-e-Muqqadas, believed by many Muslims of Kashmir to be a hair of Muhammad.The name of the shrine comes from the Urdu word Hazrat, meaning respected, and the Kashmiri word bal, meaning place. Thus it means the place which is given high regards and is respected among the people.
The shrine is situated on the left bank of the Dal Lake, Srinagar and is considered to be Kashmir's holiest Muslim shrine.

The Hazratbal Mosque in Srinagar, Kashmir
The Hazratbal mosque is situated in Srinagar district, on the western banks of the picturesque Dal Lake. Facing the beautiful Nishat Bagh, the mosque offers a spectacular view of the lake and the mountain afar. This revered shrine houses the Moi-e-Muqqadus (preserved sacred hair) of Prophet Mohammad. Public display of the hair takes place only on religious occasions. Some of the other names of the Hazrat Bal mosque are Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani and Dargah Sharif. One of the most revered Muslim shrines, Hazratbal is an epitome of the love and respect of Muslims for the Prophet.
Hazratbal Shrine of Kashmir, India dates back to as far as the early seventeenth century. The Subedar of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, Sadiq Khan, constructed Ishrat Mahal (Pleasure House), along with a garden at the site of the mosque in 1623. However, when Shahjahan visited the place in 1634, he ordered the conversion of the palace into a prayer house. But, it was only during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb that Moi-e-Muqqadus arrived in Kashmir in 1699. Initially, it was kept in the shrine of Naqashbad Sahib situated in the center of the city. However, the unparalleled huge rush of people that inundated the shrine to look at the Moi-e-Muqqades made the place seem quite small. Thus, it was decided to shift the Moi-e-Muqqades to Hazratbal, then known as Sadiqabad.
The Hazratbal Mosque of Kashmir is a beautiful structure of immaculate white marble. The Muslim Auqaf Trust headed by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah started the construction work on this marble structure in 1968. The construction took about eleven years and the mosque was completed in 1979. The Friday prayers offered at Hazratbal attract the resident Muslim in huge numbers. Another attraction of Hazratbal is that it is the only domed mosque in Srinagar.

The Moi-e-Muqqadus is usually on public display inside a glass casket on certain sacred and holy days.
The shrine is known by many names including Hazratbal, Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani, or simply Dargah Sharif. It provides peace to all souls.
Dargah Sharif is situated at the western bank of Dal Lake opposite to Nishat Bagh in Badgam district in Srinagar, Kashmir, India. You can get the entire panoramic view of the Dal Lake from the backtyard of Hazratbal Mosque. There is a breautiful garden at the backside of the Hazratbal Mosque. Hazratbal Shrine has beautiful architecture and layout.
The mosque was completed in 1979 and took about eleven years to be built. The history of the shrine goes back to the early 17th century when the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan's Subedar, Sadiq Khan, laid out a garden here and constructed a palatial building, Ishrat Mahal or Pleasure House, in 1623.

India - Separatist Convoy Welcomed In Kashmir

A convoy of vehicles carrying food and medicine was allowed into
the beseiged Kashmiri town of Chrar Sharief on Friday (17/3) by
Indian troops who surrounded the town and nearby hamlets on
Wednesday.On the arrival of the convoy -- which was organised by separatist leaders -- moslem townspeople declared their support for the Hizbul Mujahideen militia. Shabir Ahmed Shah, a leading separatist, arrived with the convoy. He was greeted by Mujahideen commander 'Major' Mast Gul, an Afghan war veteran whose bodyguards wear black turbans, identical to those worn by Taliban militiamen in Afghanistan. After the convoy arrived, Sharbir and other
separatist leaders attended prayers and addressed a crowd at a
moslem shrine in Chrar Sharief.

Militants in Srinigar who had occupied one of Islam's holiest shrines, the Hazratbal mosque, had all given themselves up by Wednesday (27/3).
The three-day standoff between about 20 heavily-armed militants and Kashmiri police began on Sunday. The militants belonged to a splinter group of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF).

the relic was first brought to India by Syed AbdUllah, a descendant of the Holy Prophet Muhammad who left Medina and settled in Bijapur, near Hyderabad in 1635.
When Syed AbdUllah died, his son, Syed Hamid, inherited the relic.Following the Mughal conquest of the region, Syed Hamid was stripped of his family estates. Finding himself unable to care for the relic, he sold it to a wealthy Kashmiri businessman, Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai RA
However, when the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb RA came to know of what had transpired, he had the relic seized and sent to the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti RA at Ajmer, and had Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai imprisoned in Delhi for possessing the relic.Later, realizing his mistake, Aurangzeb decided to restore the relic to Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai RA and allowed him to take it to Kashmir.However, by that point, Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai had already died in imprisonment. In the year 1700, the relic finally reached Kashmir, along with the body of Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai. There, Inayat Begum, daughter of Khwaja Nur-ud-Din Eshai, became a custodian of the relic and established the shrine. Inayat Begum was married into the prominent Kashmiri Banday family of Srinagar, and since then, her descendants from the Banday family have been the keepers of the relic.
