Martin Fowler in Barcelona, by ThoughtWorks
Software Design in the 21st Century
===================================
In the last decade or so we've seen a number of new ideas added to the mix to help us effectively design our software. Patterns help us capture the solutions and rationale for using them. Refactoring allows us to alter the design of a system after the code is written. Agile methods, in particular Extreme Programming, give us a highly iterative and evolutionary approach which is particularly well suited to changing requirements and environments. Martin Fowler has been a leading voice in these techniques and will give a suite of short talks featuring various aspects of how these and other developments affect our software development.
Port of Barcelona, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Europe
The Port of Barcelona has a 2000-year history and great contemporary commercial importance as one of Europe's ports in the Mediterranean, as well as Catalonia's largest port, tying with Tarragona. It is also Spain's third and Europe's ninth largest container port, with a trade volume of 2.57 million TEU's in 2008. The port is managed by the Port Authority of Barcelona. Its 7.86 km2 (3 sq mi) are divided into three zones: Port Vell (the Old Port), the commercial/industrial port and the logistics port (Barcelona Free Port). The port is undergoing an enlargement that will double its size by diverting the mouth of the Llobregat river 2 km (1¼ mi) to the south, and slightly pushing back the Llobregat Delta Nature Reserve. This is not the only port in Barcelona, as there are also two additional yacht harbors / marinas: Port Olímpic and Port Fòrum Sant Adrià to the north. The Port Vell area comprises two marinas or yacht harbors, a fishing port, a maritime station for ferries travelling to the Balearic Islands and other destinations in the Mediterranean and other stations or landing areas for cruise ships, and it abuts the industrial port. In the central area, it also houses Maremagnum (a shopping mall and nightlife complex), a multiplex cinema, the IMAX Port Vell (large-format cinema complex) and Europe's largest aquarium, containing 8,000 fish and 11 sharks in 22 basins filled with 6 million litres of sea water. Because it is located in a designated tourist zone, the Maremagnum is the only commercial mall in the city that can open on Sundays and public holidays. Next to the Maremagnum area are the Golondrines, small ships that take tourists for a visit around the port area and beyond. The Barcelona industrial port is to the south, and comprises the Free Port or Zona Franca de Barcelona, a tariff-free industrial park that has developed within the Port of Barcelona, across the flat land of the Llobregat Delta between the city of Barcelona and that of El Prat de Llobregat and the Barcelona International Airport to the south. A good place to view both the industrial and pleasure port is from Montjuïc, and more specifically, from Montjuïc Castle, as well as from the aerial cable car connecting Barceloneta with the Ferry Station and Montjuïc. In common with much of Western Europe, the older traditional industries in Spain, such as textiles, declined in the face of foreign competition. The surviving companies closed their factories in the city or along the rivers, leaving industrial wastelands or abandoned workers' colonies. In many cases within Spain, these industries moved to the Zona Franca (Catalan: Polígon Industrial de la Zona Franca). The free trade area was constructed in two phases. The first phase covered an area of 70 hectares; the second phase, covering an area of 140 hectares, started construction in 1995. The free trade zone is located within the port area, not far away from downtown Barcelona, and is easy to access. It is 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) away from the Barcelona International Airport, and connected via highway and railway. Business investors here rent offices or bonded warehouses. They can also elect to purchase land to erect their own buildings. The free trade zone offers a series of services. It is divided into a comprehensive service area, truck / lorry area, reception area and sports facilities area. It has a customs duties service, bonded warehousing service, advanced telecommunication and computer system, security system, combined multiple transport system and so on.

Technology and data. If these alone were the key to long term customer loyalty, ROI and success, we could all simply buy the right tech, turn on the data flow and declare the job done. But with humans in the mix-our customers, that’s to say--it’s what we do with our performance marketing tools, how we deploy them on behalf of our customers’ true needs and wants, in a realtime, context-rich way that matters the most. Barcelona Terrorist Attack 2017
A VAN has ploughed into a crowd of people in Barcelona, leaving two feared dead and many injured.
Two armed men are also believed to have stormed Luna de Istanbul restaurant after police said the driver had fled the initial scene.
Local television is reporting hostages have been held in the Turkish restaurant.
Gunshots have abeen reported near the food market of La Boqueria, which is a major tourist attraction.
Police said they are treating the incident as a terror attack. They earlier described the incident as a massive crash.
Witnesses said a white van driven by a man mounted the pavement before crashing into pedestrians. The driver then fled the scene.
People have been urged to avoid the area, with crowds now shuttered inside shops in the area for their own safety
More than 20 people are believed to have been injured, many seriously, according to Barcelona police on Twitter. Two people are believed to have been killed.
Witnesses said a group were struck while crossing the street.
The incident has occured at La Rambla de Catalunya, which has now been evacuated.
The area is popular with tourists and is located in the heart of the Spanish city.
Aamer Anwar was walking down Las Ramblas at the time, which he said was jam-packed with tourists visiting Spain.
He said: All of a sudden, I just sort of heard a crashing noise and the whole street just started to run, screaming. I saw a woman right next to me screaming for her kids.
Police were very, very quickly there, police officers with guns, batons, everywhere. Then the whole street started getting pushed back.
One of the shopkeepers tried to speak to him. He said he saw five or six people seriously injured on the ground, a van had driven into people.
And literally within probably 30 seconds, police vans, ambulances, police officers with guns, were piling out and we were being sectioned off and then being pushed rapidly back down Ramblas.
Witness Ethan Spibey said: All of sudden it was real chaos. People just started running screaming, there were loud bangs. People just started running into shops, there was a kind of mini-stampede where we were, down one of the alleyways.
He said he had taken refuge with dozens of other people in a nearby church.
He added: They've locked the doors because I'm not sure whether the person who may have done it has actually been caught, so they've locked the doors and told people just to wait in here.
He added people have taken refuge in shops and cafes.
Barcelona resident Esther Balboa told Express.co.uk: “The police are telling everyone to keep away from the area and several metro stations have been closed. They haven’t captured anyone yet. It’s an area very popular with tourists. It’s all really shocking.”
Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy is in contact with the authorities. He said the priority is to attend to the injured.
Catalan emergency services have asked to close metro and train stations in the area.
Authorities have called for calm and urged people to let relatives and friends know if they are okay. Carles Puigdemont, the president of the Catalan parliament, said: All focus is to the victims in the events of this afternoon in Barcelona. The coordinated police operation has been expanded.
Simon Manley, British ambassador to Spain, tweeted: We are in contact with the authorities and seeking further information following the incident in Barcelona.
The incident began at around 5.05pm local time (4.05pm BST).
The incident took place at the height of the tourist season in Barcelona, which is one of Europe's top travel destinations with at least 11 million visitors a year.
While full details of the van incident were not immediately clear, vehicles have been used to ram into crowds in a series of terror attacks across Europe since July 2016, killing more than 100 people in Nice, Berlin, London and Stockholm.

This is a magical city
The fantastic accents,
That vibrates with dribbling footballers,
And lives with honors.
Splendid for its architectural wealth
Found in Gaudi cathedral and wonderful
And splendid terraced gardens
Adorned with sculptures full of oddities.
In the center, the Spanish Steps and its flame
It radiates its light and we ignites.
Further Plaza Catalunya takes us
Towards inhabited youth studying and walks.
Rich in Port of monumental structures,
Which conditions and works at a breakneck pace.
Amid his music museum captivates us melodiously
And we are captivated by the old BARCELONA which lovingly discovered.
Your football is like your flamboyant city
Bright by his passes, and markdown your players,
The passes are millimeter and a handkerchief, you leave a good ball maddening
The opposing defense, completely disoriented and distant tone scorer.
And when, as this year the FC Barcelona win the European Cup.
So you Barcelona that the Catalan, you show what the party means.
The Ramblas, Plaza Catalunya, we see the red and blue jersey of European Champion,
And when, early in the morning the party will run out, there will be no complaints.
BARCELONA, is like a perfume,
It wafts scents of your universe,
And you find yourself driven to this perfume,
And forever you shall have a heart full of happiness.
