WA State Homecoming Adventure: Part 3 (The Granite Falls Fish Ladder)
In July of 2017 I had the opportunity to take a “homecoming trip” to WA State after over 5 1/2 years. In part 3 of this series we’ll check out a quick, easy stop just outside of Granite Falls, WA. “The Fish Ladder” is a cool spot worth checking out if you’re in the area. Boasting sheer cliffs, powerful moving water, beautiful falls and interesting rock formations, it’s a great place to swing by before or after conquering one of the bigger hikes in the area, or maybe after grabbing breakfast at one of the quaint local restaurants or coffee stands. The Pacific Northwest is an amazing place, especially when you consider that there are places like this “just off the side of the road!”
Later on in the series I’ll take you on the second of two great hikes just outside my hometown (with more scenery that will blow you away), we’ll spend a little more time with my family and I’ll share some more of the sights and sounds of this “diamond in the rough” little town I’ve only come to love more as the years have gone by. No matter where I roam the PNW runs deep in my roots, and I hope this series will help others to see why. Thanks for watching!
Kelcema lake
Kelcema lake is a short hike and a small lake that is big on scenery. The morning drive east of Granite Falls on the Mountain Loop Highway past Silverton was pleasantly interrupted by a camera shy doe and her two fawns. Once on trail the flora included fritillaria (chocolate lily), lichen, grandfather moss, heather, penstemon, and orchids (coral root). Weathered snags amid the old cedars, rock, and waterfalls invite you to meditate in the reflections of a clear alpine lake. They are all nestled under the gaze of bald mountain. Views of Devils peak and sounds of small falls that peek-a-boo when you drive off beckon to to stay a little longer when driving the road back. If this was quick excursion, you'll say to yourself, I should have planned to stay longer.
Hiking Granite Mountain - Washington State 2017
On this day (May 2017), I hiked and explored Granite Mountain located in Snoqualmie Region, Washington State along the I-90. The views from the summit are astonishing, however, it comes at a price with the mountain nearly 1000 feet gain per mile. The hike is about 8.6 miles round trip and its highest point is 5,629 feet (1,716 meters). This is an extremely tough hike but worth the views if anyone makes it to the top of the summit. Also, dogs are allowed on the hike, however, must be kept on a leash.

Washington State Trails
We all know how important our trails are in Washington state. Washington's National Park Fund helps our state's three largest National Parks, Mount Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks create and maintain that need for now, and for future generations to come.
Big Four Ice Caves, Granite Falls, Washington, Snowshoe Hiking
We took the short 1.1 mile hike up to Big Four in hopes of doing some snowshoeing around the top.. Lack of snow right now is sad, to say the least.

Woodburn Falls/Round Lake Loop Hike Washington
Combined the two hikes located in Lacamas Park, starting at the Lacamas Park Trailhead. Round lake is awsome and hosts fishing for bass, bluegill, and perch. Woodburn falls is fairly unknown and is the only waterfall in the park that isnt controlled by a dam making the water flow 100% natural. The falls is seasonal and is usually dried up from mid june to october. The hike was 2.3 miles roundtrip and 200 ft of elevation change. The second falls shown in the vid (also shown in thumbnail) is called Potholes Falls a.k.a. The Potholes 11-18-11

Yosemite Upper Falls Hike
The most challenging hike so far. Upper Yosemite Falls Trail is a 7.2 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Yosemite Valley, California that features a waterfall and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round.
White Bluffs - Hanford Reach North Slope - Eastern Washington State
White Bluffs, which is part of the Hanford Reach, contains some of the most scenic desert wilderness in Eastern Washington. The Columbia River carved its way through the basin, creating a mosaic of clay and sandstone cliffs, huge sand dunes and small spring feed lakes reminiscent of the Dakota Bad Lands. The bright white cliffs and rock and clay formations are a treasure to explore, and a testament to the power of water and wind.

Yosemite Falls Hike
On my last full day on our trip to Yosemite National Park I took a solo hike up the Yosemite Falls trail. It was a 2700 foot elevation climb with dozens of steep switchbacks. I wasn’t sure if I had it in me to finish it, but decided to chronicle my journey up.
Mount Pilchuck hike
Mount Pilchuck is a mountain located in Snohomish County, Washington. It is 57 miles (92 km) northeast of Seattle. It is part of the Cascade Range.
Mount Pilchuck is located within Mount Pilchuck State Park, but the area surrounding the mountain, including the trailhead, are within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The Lushootseed name for the mountain is bəlalgʷa. Under agreement, the trail leading to the summit is wholly maintained by the United States Forest Service, even though it is within a state park. This is one of the most popular trails in the region due to easy access, and panoramic views of the Cascade range to the east,[3] and the Puget Sound to the west.[4]
At Mount Pilchuck's summit is an old fire lookout, now used as shelter for hikers. This former lookout is jointly maintained by Washington State Parks and the Everett branch of The Mountaineers.
Some years the trail to the summit is still covered with snow until late in the summer. CREDIT to

A Visit to One of America's Top 10 Carbon Storing Forests
Join The Wilderness Societys forest guru, Mike Anderson, as he takes you to one of the United States top carbon storing national forests the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington state. As one of the most visited national forests in the United States, the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is home to an abundance of recreational opportunities, old growth forests, glacier-covered peaks and spectacular rushing rivers. Anderson explains why mature and old growth forests act as giant piggy banks for carbon storage and how these towering giants are essential for reducing the effects of climate change.
