We trekked down to Hemmed-In-Hollow the day after a big rain. After over 25 trips down this trail, we finally caught a substantial amount of water. This out and back trail starts at the Compton trailhead and features a kick-your-butt walk out. This is part of our continued training for our upcoming trek on the Appalachian Trail / Shenandoah Valley Section in June.

Hemmed In Hollow Water Fall Near Compton, Arkansas
Hemmed in Hollow is the grand finale of a series of waterfalls leading to the Buffalo River near Compton, AR. It is the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and the Rockies, and is just minutes away from Harrison, AR.
The hike to valley is tough and is tougher coming out if you start at the Compton Trail Head. You have been warned as it features steep, sometimes muddy grades, and is all uphill once you start climbing out. For easier access, you can canoe to the stream and then walk a flatter trail to the falls.
By the way, the woman running the post office in Compton is a great source of information about the area. She is very friendly and I appreciated her generosity and the information she shared about the area.
Hemmed in Hollow raging waterfall at Buffalo River, AR
This is the 201 foot tall waterfall at Hemmed in Hollow in the Buffalo River wilderness area near Compton, AR on May 11, 2015. Most of the time the falls are dry or barely running but there had been heavy rains in the days preceding the hike. It is a 2.5 mile hard hike down to the falls.

Hemmed in Hollow is the grand finale of a series of waterfalls leading to the Buffalo River near Compton, AR. It is the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and the Rockies, and is just minutes away from Harrison, AR. This is one of the smaller falls that leads to the grand finale in one of the most magnificent areas in the Ozarks.

Hemmed in Hollow bluffs at Buffalo River
This hike is for experienced hikers who are in very good shape. It is very difficult. This is a video some campers at the top of the bluffs at Hemmed in Hollow at the Buffalo River near Compton, AR. The scenery on top the bluffs is spectacular. Start down to the bluffs from the main trail going down to Hemmed in Hollow located at Compton, AR. About a third of the way down to Hemmed in Hollow at about N36 4.439' and W93 18.751' go down 1200 very steep feet to the top of the bluffs at N36 4.273' and W93 18.607'.
There are two waterfalls that flow over the bluff (both were dry so go after a rain if you can). The trail down to the top of the bluffs is almost non-existant. The elevation drop is 640 foot in the 1200 feet. hike down to the bluffs. The climb back up is very very difficult but if you can make it you will be rewarded with some spectacular scenery. Compton Trail, Buffalo River Arkansas
This is a point about half way through the Compton Trail in the Ponca Wilderness Area of Buffalo River (north end of the park) which connects to the Hemmed-in Hollow trail.
Hemmed-In Hollow
The Hemmed–in Hollow Trail begins in the heart of the Ponca Wilderness at the Compton trailhead, and winds down the mountain side descending nearly 1400ft to the sandstone bluffs along the Buffalo River. The trail opens up along the way giving visitors outstanding scenic views of the Buffalo River and the Ozark Mountains that surround it. The gem of the hike is the Hemmed-in Hollow falls. The picturesque Hemmed-in Hollow falls cascade nearly 210 feet over the rugged Ozark bluffs, making it the highest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians.
The Hemmed-in Hollow Trail is an extremely steep and strenuous trail that will humble even the most experienced hiker. Visitors will need to plan to take the entire day to hike this trail, due to the rough wilderness terrain. The Hemmed-in Hollow Trail intersects with many of the other trail systems in the Ponca Wilderness creating multiple spur trails for the more adventurous hiker. The spur trails connect the Hemmed-in Hollow Trail with the Sneeds Creek Trail, Centerpoint Trail, Bench Trail, Buffalo River Trail, and Old River Trail. The Hemmed-in Hollow Trail can also be accessed via the Centerpoint Trailhead located on Hwy. 43. This option is not quite as strenuous as Compton Trailhead, but visitors will still need to plan an entire day for this hike, due to the rough wilderness terrain. In my opinion, the ORT is the easiest way to Hemmed-in Hollow by foot. It is about a 3 mile hike up river from Kyle’s Landing with about 4 river crossings. You can also take the BRT from Kyle’s Landing but it is a little more strenuous.The Hemmed-in Hollow Trail is an extremely steep and strenuous trail that will humble even the most experienced hiker. Visitors will need to plan to take the entire day to hike this trail, due to the rough wilderness terrain. The Hemmed-in Hollow Trail intersects with many of the other trail systems in the Ponca Wilderness creating multiple spur trails for the more adventurous hiker. March nineteenth 2008, the buffalo river just had the worst flood in 30 years. Some friends and I went to take a peak at the falls......which were more captivating than Seth Prim's eyes, something Josh Lawson once thought impossible.

Me my wife and her friend on a walk at Compton hollow. Its just off of kk highway in Webster county in Missouri. Its a great place for a hike and other stuff.

Hemmed-In Hollow Falls
I hiked for the first time to Hemmed-In Hollow on November 1, 2009. It is the tallest waterfall in Arkansas at 209 feet..its also recognized as the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and Rockies. On the way there and back I passed through Boxley Valley on the Buffalo River and got some pictures of the Arkansas Elk Herd and valley fog. The hike back out of 1,300 feet was worth it but it was tough! The second tallest waterfall in Arkansas (Diamond Falls - 148 feet) is just around the corner but I didnt visit today although I caught it and Hemmed-In from the overlook. Pictures are here:
Hemmed-In-Hollow Falls April 6, 2017 Ponca Wilderness Area, Buffalo National River Arkansas
My brother Michael and I hiked here from the Compton Trailhead to this 209 foot high waterfall. The falls flows into a creek contained by 200 foot bluffs on three sides that empties into the Buffalo River. It's a difficult 2.5 mile hike that is almost straight down with very few switchbacks. It is the highest falls between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalacians. We accessed this place the year before from the Buffalo River when we canoed from Steelhead Campground to Kyle's Landing. This half mile route is a much easier hike.

In Feb. 2013, Jerry, David, Richard and Mark backpacked to Hemmed In Hollow Falls near the Buffalo River in Newton County, Arkansas.

I hiked the trail twice. At the first time there was almost no water at the fall. This time I went to the fall after some substantial rain. The water run really well and I saw some nice little waterfalls on the trail too. And there was also plenty of water on the trail.
If you really want to see a amazing waterfall you will get wet feet.

We are on a quest to hike a 105-mile section of the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah Valley in beautiful Virginia in June 2019. This is a training hike to help us prepare. Be sure to SUBSCRIBE if you want to follow our journey.
Hideout Hollow Falls trail is a short two miles out and back trail through second growth timber leading to a high bluff that eventually winds its way to the top of a 37 ft. tall waterfall. The wet weather creek has a couple small water falls just upstream from the main fall. The trail head is found by continuing past the turn to the Compton trail head.
The best season to visit is from September through April, during the rainy season, even though it is open year round. There is a way down the bluff to the base of the fall; but you need to discover it yourself. It is very dangerous. The bluff views and large rock formations make it worth the trip even when the water is not running.
Canoeing the Buffalo River and numerous other hikes are in the area. One could spend two weeks in the region exploring.

Overnight Hike - Hemmed in Hollow and Goat Trail
A 2 day/1 night adventure into the Buffalo River Wilderness. I parked my car at the Compton Trailhead. I took the Hemmed in Hollow trail down to the falls and then took the Old River Trail to reach the Centerpoint trail which the Big Bluff, Goat Trail is on. I camped around the bluff then the next day I took the Sneeds Creek trail back up to my car at the trailhead. We had just gotten quite a bit of rain at the time in the Ozarks and all the water was flowing great!
