Henry B Plant Museum - by Anica Beara

Tampa Bay Hotel | Henry B. Plant Museum | Plant Hall | University of Tampa | Haunted Hotel?
This grand building was originally The Tampa Bay Hotel, built in 1891. Today it is home to the University of Tampa and the Henry B. Plant Museum. It has several minarets. You can get a great view of the sun setting over the building from the Tampa Riverwalk.
Some say the building is haunted by ghosts.
The song is Sun:Moon:Stars by Tapes & Tubes.

OLDEST LIFT IN FLORIDA: MANUALLY CONTROLLED 1891 Otis Elevator at Henry B. Plant Hall, Tampa, FL
Filmed September 2018.
First and Foremost, I just want to wish everyone a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! I hope you are all having an EXCELLENT Time with you're families and having fun and have given many gifts as that's what Christmas is all about!!! But I also really hope Santa Claus, Ducy Claus, you're parents, or whoever you believe in was good to you as well! :)
I also want to thank you guys as well, as it has now officially been 4 YEARS of ME being on YouTube!! That's right, 4 YEARS!!! With both CHRISTMAS being Celebrated as well as my 4th year Anniversary of being on YouTube, OF COURSE WE NEED TO CELEBRATE!!!! And CELEBRATE, with something TRULY, TRULY AMAZING!!!
To Celebrate, we have this AMAZING, GORGEOUS, ANCIENT, HISTORIC and ALMOST COMPLETELY ORIGINAL 1891 MANUALLY CONTROLLED Otis Traction Elevator!!!!!! This Elevator is the OLDEST ELEVATOR I've EVER BEEN ON in MY LIFE, The OLDEST in Florida and possibly the Southeast US, at 127 YEARS OLD!!!! Yes, you got that right, it's 127 YEARS OLD, from 1891, and STILL WORKING TODAY!!!! And not just that, BUT WORKING LIKE NEW!!! And this is one of the OLDEST Working Elevators in America!!!
Unfortunately, it's Not Exactly Completely Original, as the Motor was originally Water Powered Hydraulic, and replaced with a Traction Motor with Cables/Ropes in 1925, which while not original, the motor Is STILL 93 YEARS OLD!!! And the Traction Motor Startup is VERY EPIC!!!
In addition, the call annunciator was replaced either in the 1990s or 2000s with a newer one by PTL. The gate is also replaced most likely, being it has the Otis Sito Logo on it.
But aside from that, this thing is COMPLETELY ORIGINAL from 1891 with it's ORIGINAL, GORGEOUS, Real Wood CUBAN MOHAGGANY Cab, which yes, the wood was imported BY SHIP all the way from Cuba, to build the Elevator Cab!!!! This thing also has it's ORIGINAL WOODEN GUIDE RAILS (Yet it runs SUPER SMOOTHLY), and most of it's shaft equipment, as well as the call stations, outer doors and again, the cab, left TOTALLY UNTOUCHED from the 1890s!!!
The Crank may or may not be original, but I'm pretty positive it's Original, because there are some original 1880s/90s Otis Tractions on YouTube filmed by other users with the exact same crank as this one. Obviously, the keyswitch was retrofitted in.
Also, for those wondering how this survived so long in it's Very Antiquated Condition, thankfully being this is Florida's OLDEST Elevator, it is HEAVILY PROTECTED HISTORICALLY, and as a result is EXEMPT from the CODES!!! And as a Result, this won't be going anywhere anytime soon, and hopefully NEVER will!!! This thing truly is a MASTERPIECE in Engineering and a TRUE HISTORICAL RELIC In Vertical Transportation History. They didn't let me operate this thing, but that's OK, cause that means the goal is to preserve this thing and KEEP IT WORKING for MANY YEARS TO COME! Yes, as the drawing at the beginning of the video suggests, there is another elevator behind this one, but it was totally modded and replaced, and that is currently the main passenger elevator, and this one is only used for freight and if that other modded elevator breaks. That all being said, I'm VERY LUCKY to have RIDDEN this MASTERPIECE, and to have found the people to contact!!!!
HUGE THANKS to the Staff at The University of Tampa for letting ride this AMAZING PIECE OF HISTORY, I've wanted to film this thing for YEARS now, and I'm so glad I got to and it's all because of them!!
That all being said, MERRY CHRISTMAS, THANKS FOR 4 GREAT YEARS OF FLORIDIAN ELEVATORS, and Enjoy the Video about the History, plus some rides on this AMAZING MACHINE!!!!
Installed: 1891 (Manually Controlled Otis, Water Powered Hydraulic)
Modernized/Upgrades: 1925 (Motor Replaced with Otis Traction Motor, unknown if bottom drive or overhead), Circa 1940s-1960s (Scissor Gate Replaced), 1990s or 2000s (Call Annunciator Replaced)
Aside from the upgrades listed above, the Shaft Equipment, Crank, Cab, Call Stations and Wooden Guiderails are ALL ORIGINAL from 1891!!!!

The Plant Museum - Documentary
Elise Edens and I teamed up for our Campus Short Documentary project. We decided to film the Plant Museum at the University of Tampa.
We met with Lindsay Huban who was our tour guide and interviewee. She was quite knowledgable and a pleasure to work with.
Here is our finished product. Enjoy.

Okahumpka Train Depot, Cracker Country
In 1898 the Okahumpka Train Depot was built to serve a section of the Henry B. Plant Railroad system that stretched from Tampa to Savannah. The train depot, originally located in Lake County, was donated to Cracker Country in 1978 by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad System. Since its donation, the wooden roof shingles and platform railings have been added.
Today, visitors can sit in the original passenger waiting rooms and stand in the same ticket office that hosted eager passengers in the early 1900s. Guests can also spend time in the freight room viewing the 500 square foot model train display that was built by Robert Nelson and Jim Hunter. The display, which took over 3,000 hours of labor, models central Florida’s setup at the turn of the century.
Cracker Country - A rural Florida living history museum
Cracker Country is Tampa’s only living history museum and is located on the Florida State Fairgrounds. It was founded with the purpose of preserving Florida’s rural heritage in 1978 by Mildred W. & Doyle E. Carlton, Jr. The museum holds a collection of 13 original buildings dating from 1870-1912 which were relocated from across the state of Florida. Our buildings range from public buildings like our Terry Store and Okahumpka Train Depot, to private buildings like our Carlton and Smith homes. Today, the historically furnished buildings recreate the lifestyles of the past, and costumed interpreters portray daily living as Florida pioneers.
