Inventing America: Liberty for All
Inventing America brings our Founding Fathers back to life in a TV talk show before a live audience. In Episode 3, Liberty for All, James Madison (John Douglas Hall), Thomas Jefferson (Bill Barker), Alexander Hamilton (Hal Bidlack) and Patrick Henry (Richard Schumann) reveal the conflicts and infighting behind the new U.S. Constitution and how that led to the Bill of Rights. The program features a Q&A with college students in which the Founders apply the Bill of Rights to our own time. It concludes with Henry's famous Give me liberty, or give me death speech that inspired the idea of America in the first place.
Georgia State Capitol: A HABS Documentation Case Study
The Southeast Regional Office of the National Park Service recently offered an online training course illustrating the significance and experience of preparing Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) documentation of a significant, historic structure. As part of the course and to serve as a case study, this short video was produced on the HABS documentation of the Georgia State Capitol (HABS GA-2109).
We thought our friends and fellow preservationists would enjoy this video and learn more about the Heritage Documentation Programs, NPS.
See the HABS documentation of the Georgia State Capitol in the HABS/HAER/HALS Collection in The Library of Congress at
Significance: This is the fourth capitol building owned by the State and has been in continuous use since its completion in 1889. Located atop a hill near downtown Atlanta, Georgia, it previously contained the Atlanta City Hall and Fulton County Courthouse as well as one of the first city parks in Atlanta. The Capitol is a monumental classical dome and columned structure with a convincing atmosphere of architectural purity and design integrity. Several interior renovations have caused the loss of historic fabric, most notably the State Library, but overall the original design has not been altered. The exterior has been well-maintained and the building's monumentality was enhanced in 1959 when Georgia gold leaf was applied to the surface of the dome and lantern, adding a flourish to the somber, Neo-Classical-Renaissance Revival building. Today the grounds are filled with statuary and other memorials, as well as extensive landscape plantings. Still used as a state house, the Georgia State Capitol continues to be the prime architectural symbol of the state, representing over 100 years of colorful history. It has been a popular attraction for generations of Georgians and their visitors.

U.S. Custom House - Savannah, GA
The U.S. Custom House in Savannah is the scene of numerous historic African American stories.
After Reconstruction, some of the first appointments of blacks to government jobs were made in this building. They were appointed to positions including custom officers, postal clerks and letter carriers. The federal court in the Custom House also heard several cases of slave-running from the yacht Wanderer.
Col. John Deveaux, an African American, was made customs collector by President William McKinley in 1898. Deveaux would hold this top position until his death in 1909.
The stunning Greek Revival style building was constructed in 1848. The building at 1 E. Bay Street now houses U.S. Customs and Border Protection offices.

Chapter Three/Part Two: Naval War of 1812 Illustrated - Blue Water Part Two
Go to Chapter Four
The British began to blockade American ports at the end of 1812. With so much of its naval force dedicated to the European theater and so little to spare for the American matters, a British blockade was the most effective way to bottle up the American Navy and maritime commerce and thereby cripple the American economy. The British government announced its first official blockade on November 27, 1812 to cover the mouths of the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River, cutting off Philadelphia, Baltimore and Norfolk along with many other port towns located along those bodies of water. Aware of the hostility to the War in much of New England and the fact that its ships were still providing vital food supplies to the British army in the Iberian Peninsula, the British expanded the blockade south of New England on March 26, 1813 to include areas around New York City, Savannah, Charleston and Port Royal, South Carolina, and the Mississippi River. Eight months later, on November 16, 1813, the British increased the blockade to cover the entire U.S. coast from Long Island Sound to the southern limit of Georgia and around the mouth of the Mississippi River. And finally on April 25, 1814, it was extended to include the entire New England coast.
In Europe the long war was coming to an end. The victorious British and their allies marched into Paris on March 30, 1814 and within a week Napoleon abdicated. As the Napoleonic Wars wound down the British were able to direct more military assets to the American theater. So over a period of a year and half as the blockade noose tightened, blue water activity for American commerce and the U.S. Navy greatly diminished. But fast merchantmen continued to run the blockade and there were a number of occasions when American Naval vessels either ran the blockade or came out to engage the blockaders. The first of these was a disaster for the Americans.
James Lawrence had been promoted to captain following his victory in the U.S. Sloop-of-War Hornet over the H.M. Brig Peacock and was given command of the U.S. Frigate Chesapeake. It was in Boston harbor where the blockade had not yet been formally proclaimed but was effectively bottled up by the H.M. Frigate Shannon under Captain Philip Bowes Vere Broke. He had taken a page from the American book and rigorously trained his crew in gunnery and for fifty-six days captured and burned merchantmen attempting to enter Boston harbor. He hoped to provoke Lawrence into a fight. On June 1, 1813 Lawrence had determined to rid Boston harbor of the British frigate and put to sea flying a banner that read, Free Trade and Sailors' Rights!
