U.S. Route 89, Utah, United States, North America
U.S. Route 89 (US 89) is a north–south United States Highway with two sections, and one former section. The southern section runs for 848 miles (1,365 kilometers) from Flagstaff, Arizona, to the southern entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The northern section runs for 404 miles (650 kilometers) from the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park to Montana, ending at the Canadian border. An implied route through Yellowstone connects the two sections. Before 1992, U.S. Highway 89 was a Canada to Mexico, border-to-border, highway that ended at Nogales, Arizona, on its southern end. Sometimes called the National Park Highway, U.S. 89 links seven national parks across the Mountain West. In addition, fourteen other national park areas, mostly national monuments are also reachable from this backbone of the Rockies. The first city in Utah along either U.S. 89 or U.S. 89A is Kanab where the two routes re-unite. From Kanab U.S. 89 proceeds north passing by the Zion National Park and the Bryce Canyon National Park. It eventually enters the Sevier County, Utah, and the Sanpete Valleys. The highway then passes by Thistle, Utah, a ghost town that was destroyed by a landslide in 1983. The highway then enters the Wasatch Front where U.S. 89 becomes the main streets of the largest cities in Utah. The highway is also often in the shadows of Interstate 15 during its route along the Wasatch Front. U.S. 89 runs concurrent with I 15 from Bountiful to Farmington, where it departs and runs at the base of the Wasatch Mountains until it reaches Ogden. In Ogden, the highway is Washington Blvd. From Ogden the highway runs north until it meets U.S. 91 at Brigham City, Utah, where it turns east and goes to serve the Cache Valley and Logan, Utah. In Logan, U.S. 89 is Main Street and it passes by the campus of the Utah State University. The highway next proceeds up Logan Canyon to Bear Lake where the highway exits Utah. Two sections of U.S. 89 in Utah have been designated Scenic Byways. The Kanab to Mt. Carmel and Long Valley Scenic Byway is a designated Utah Scenic Byway. From Logan to Bear Lake is designated as the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway by the National Scenic Byways project. The section of U.S. 89 in Utah, other than concurrencies with Interstate 70, Interstate 15, U.S. Highway 6, and U.S. Highway 91, is defined in the Utah Code Annotated § 72-4-114(8). Utah is dominated by the Colorado Plateau. Along U.S. 89 are the Zion National Park, the Bryce Canyon National Park, and the Cedar Breaks National Monument. Although not readily adjacent to U.S. 89, the Capitol Reef National Park is accessible from U.S. 89. U.S. 89 leaves northern Utah well-north of Salt Lake City and the Timpanogos Cave National Monument and the Golden Spike National Historic Site. Prior to 1992, the southern terminus of US 89 was at Nogales, Arizona, and the highway proceeded to Flagstaff, Arizona, along what is now I-19, State Route 79, US 60, US 93, and State Route 89. In addition, there was another US 89A in Arizona between Prescott and Flagstaff on which is now State Route 89A. In central Arizona, the need for a north–south U.S. Highway was largely superseded by the completion of I-17, which now carries the bulk of the traffic and all of the heavy trucks along this north–south corridor. I-17 connects I-40 in Flagstaff with I-10 in Phoenix, Arizona, along a very hilly route that also passes through the Verde Valley. US 89 was discontinuous for most of 1983 due to a landslide that destroyed the town of Thistle, Utah and closed the highway for about 8 months in central Utah.
From early 2013 to mid 2015, US 89 was closed approximately 25 miles south of Page, Arizona, due to a geological event that caused the roadway to buckle and subside. Traffic was being re-routed via 45 miles of secondary and tertiary roads on the Navajo Nation. U.S. Route 89T opened on August 29, 2013, a 28-mile (45 km) paved portion of a Navajo route to serve as a long-term bypass of the closed section.
Mayor retaliates against teen journalist (from Natural Family Values)
centers on the events in Kanab, Utah when the town's mayor and city council passed a resolution defining the proper gender-roles of its citizens and described the 'natural family' as one man, one woman with a full quiver of children. The result of this resolution nearly tore the town apart and drove away tourists—one of Kanab's most important economic assets—all in the name of protecting the family. But the film asks whether there was something deeper to this complex issue, as it explores the many facets of this uniquely western American town founded by Mormon polygamists, and how a community, fearing change and the influence from outsiders, reacts to protect a way of life.

Indigenous Truth
The proposed Bears Ears National Monument in SE Utah is a place rich in history and culture. It is a place to connect, a place to heal, and a place where Native American traditional knowledge can be explored and nurtured so that it continues to inform and illuminate modern life. The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, a consortium of five sovereign Indian nations — the Hopi, Navajo, Uintah & Ouray Ute, Ute Mountain Ute, and Zuni — has formally petitioned President Barack Obama to proclaim the Bears Ears National Monument in order to protect this extraordinary area for our Tribes, all Native people, and the nation.
The proposed 1.9 million acre monument is a landscape of deep, carved canyons, long mesas, inspiring arches, and arresting red rock formations. The monument’s namesake, the Bears Ears, are twin buttes in the heart of the landscape that rise high above the piñon-juniper forests and canyons that adorn the renowned and majestic Cedar Mesa. It lies in Southern Utah, north of the Navajo Nation and the San Juan River, east of the Colorado River, and west of the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. Bears Ears is adjacent to Canyonlands National Park and is every bit the equal of Canyonlands and the other great parks and monuments of the Colorado Plateau.

What do you do when the Solution is the Problem?
Utah is a unique state because 90% of the population resides in urban areas. This leaves a lot of communities in the state that are off the Wasatch Front and left without a voice when it comes to issues that impact their communities.
Rural Utah has become a museum of sorts for the Wasatch Front. These are the places we go, to escape the daily grind. However in our efforts to preserve the places we all consider special to visit, we have forgotten about the people who live in the surrounding communities.
County Commissioners from a number of these areas that are impacted have organized the Western Freedom Festival. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the heritage, customs, and cultures associated with the Western Lifestyle here in UTAH.
Much of that heritage is related directly to the land and natural resources that brought people to settle in places like Marysvale, Panguitch, Kanab, and Cedar City (among many others).
This week on the County Seat we will take a closer look at the Western Freedom Festival and its purpose. We'll touch on issues relating to the health of the forest, current policies on publicly managed lands, and the impacts they have on rural communities.
Our Guests this week include:
Darin Bushman, Piute County Commissioner
Alan Gardner, Washington County Commissioner
Doug Heaton, Kane County Commissioner
Mark Whitney, Beaver County Commissioner
LeLand Pollock, Garfield County Commissioner

Utah's Stolen Treasures By Gene Covington
Utah's Stolen Treasures is a Compelling Work that Blends American Indian Folklore and Personal History with Beautiful Photography
Utah's Stolen Treasures is a book that was inspired by three American Indian shields discovered by author Gene Covington's grandparents in Wayne County, Utah back in 1926.
Using the discovery of the shields as a point of departure, Utah's Stolen Treasures is a multi-layered tale, based primarily upon facts regarding the study of and caring for of the shields after they were discovered. As this fascinating book takes you via photographs through some of the most beautiful country in America, it also delves into the history of the early American pioneers and the American Indians they encountered. The tale is a compelling account of the love that not only the American Indians have for the land, but that all Americans share. It is a story of the importance of remembering those of the past.
The book's story is centered around the three Fremont Indian tribal leaders who may have originally buried the shields in the early 1500s. This trio of Indian Elders appears throughout the story, first as living men and later in spirit form. The book also recounts the story of the author's own family, defining who Native Americans are, as it follows the lives of his grandparents up to and beyond the discovery of the shields.
But Utah's Stolen Treasures is more than just a family history or a tale of Indian folklore. Ultimately it's a plea to have the shields returned to Utah and for all of mankind to come together in peace. It uses the American Indian people, who originally occupied the lands that are now the United States, as an example of just how this might be accomplished.
UTAH'S STOLEN TREASURES (ISBN: 978-1-61897-954-4) is now available for $63.00 and can be ordered through the publisher's website: or at amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.

About the Author: Gene Covington is the ninth child, fifth son, and the youngest of June G. Covington and Florence A (Pectol) Covington. Florence was the oldest daughter of Ephraim and Dorothy Pectol, who discovered the Pectol Shields. Gene was conceived and raised in Wayne County, a product of the land from where the shields were found. His mind, soul and physical body were literally created and shaped from the land and its history. From being born at the beginning of World War II and his first memories of his oldest brothers returning from service in that war, his American heritage and strong American patriotism and loyalty to his country was formed. He was the fifth of five brothers to join the United States Navy. He served in the Navy for 20 years and his service saw the Cuban Bay of Pigs, the North Korean Pueblo incident, the Vietnam War and the Cold war. The Covington family is strong on American patriotism. None of these five brothers were draft, all volunteered to serve their country with pride. Gene is the product of a close family that came from the land of Wayne County, Utah. During his growing years, he lived, worked, hunted, fished, shepherded and farmed the lands as his brothers, sisters and ancestors had before him. He learned of its history and heritage from living on it and from his grandfather's and his parents' teachings. This book is from his personal knowledge, research and love of the land where these treasures were found. It was written with the love of his family, his country and the freedom for which it stands.

Hotels In St George Howard Johnson Hotels In St George
Hotels In St George Google Reviews, My company and I, by a series of circumstances, did not arrive at the hotel until almost 6am, which was terrible. When I asked the staff if we could please be given the room for eight hours of sleep, the manager CK stonewalled us. He was nice enough to give us the typical hour/hour and a half late check out that you can always get, but it was evident that all he really cared about was getting the rooms turned over for the next day, and not hospitality. The truly offensive thing was when he began suggesting to me that we could just purchase the rooms for an additional day to get an extra two hours of sleep. I felt quite like a transaction rather than a guest, and will never stay at another Howard Johnson Inn if this is how they encourage their management to make their guests feel.
----------
Location was excellent and the layout of the room was good. Other than the carpets, the room seemed clean.
Generally OK, but the carpets are filthy (really, not acceptable) and the pillows and bed were old and not comfortable. The breakfast was average at best. Need to upgrade the televisions.
