The National Maritime Museum (Dutch: Het Scheepvaartmuseum) is a maritime museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. The museum is housed in a former naval storehouse, 's Lands Zeemagazijn or Admiraliteits Magazijn, designed by the Dutch architect Daniël Stalpaert and constructed in 1656. The museum moved to this building in 1973.
The museum is dedicated to maritime history and contains many artifacts associated with shipping and sailing. The collection contains, among other things, paintings, scale models, weapons and world maps. The paintings depict Dutch naval officers such as Michiel de Ruyter and impressive historical sea battles.
The map collection includes works by famed 17th-century cartographers Willem Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu. The museum also has a surviving copy of the first edition of Maximilian Transylvanus' work, De Moluccis Insulis, the first to describe Ferdinand Magellan's voyage around the world.
Moored outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th-century ship which sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies. The replica was built in the years 1985-1990. After an extensive renovation in 2007-2011, Het Scheepvaartmuseum reopened on October 2nd 2011.

Inside National Maritime Museum and across Marineterrein - Walking Amsterdam in 360 degrees 4K
A brief walk from besides and into the Dutch National Maritime Museum, before we head over to Marineterrein, which was only recently opened to the public. We see inside the museum to have a glimpse at it's spectacular glass roof and we also walk past the Amsterdam, a replica of a VOC ship from the 18th century. It has brought great riches to the Netherlands but how slaves were used on board is often withheld in history lessons. The Marineterrein used to be censored from above on Google Maps as it was still actively used by the Dutch navy. It is now a beloved space to chill out and splash around.

Het scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2/3) Navigational Instruments
The National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam in the Netherlands have a special Room for historical Navigational Instruments.
Right up until the 20th century, ships still depended on the sun, moon and stars to navigate the seas. Sailors used the earliest navigational instruments - the astrolabe, the cross-staff and the back-staff - to determine how far north or south they were from their point of departure. All instruments worked with the same principle: they measured the angle of the sun (or star) against the horizon.

Amsterdam In Your Pocket - National Maritime Museum Amsterdam
In the 17th century the Netherlands was one of the wealthiest and most important nations in the world and this was in large part due to its maritime prowess. No other country in the world had as many ships sailing the seas of the globe as Holland. After thorough renovations, the Maritime Museum once again demonstrates how the sea has defined Dutch culture. Stimulating, interactive exhibits bring 500 years of maritime history to life. The significance of this industry in the modern age is also explained in a clear and concise manner. Children will also love the museum, especially the replica of the famous VOC (Dutch East India Company) ship.

What to do in Amsterdam - Maritime Museum area
Take a trip around the IJ-bay, east of the main entrance of Amsterdam Central Station. If you are interested in contemporary architecture, science and the maritime history of Amsterdam, this trip is recommended. From the central station, follow the Prins Hendrikkade to the Scheepvaartmuseum (National Maritime Museum). You can take the return to the central station over the Oosterdokskade.
Important places you will pass:
BASILIEK VAN DE HEILIGE NICOLAAS - Basilica of St Nicholas is a remarkable building opposite Amsterdam’s Central Station. When your eyes get used to its rather dark interior you will discover superb decorations, sculptures, stained-glass windows and mural paintings
SCHREIERSTOREN - The name of the tower started out as Schrayhouck, which means ‘sharp
angle’, a reference to the sharp angle at which the tower is positioned with regard to the canal of Oudezijds Kolk and the Geldersekade. Currently the Schreierstoren houses the VOC café
HET SCHEEPVAARTHUIS – The Shipping House is considered a masterpiece of the Amsterdamse School architectural style, and was built as a joint office for six Amsterdam shipping companies. In 2007 the Scheepvaarthuis was given a new use as Grand Hotel Amrâth.
NEMO SCIENCE MUSEUM introduces young and old to the world of science and technology. The museum has an amazing terrace on the rooftop that gives gorgeous views on Amsterdam.
HET SCHEEPVAARTMUSEUM – The National Maritime Museum displays cover many aspects of The Netherlands glorious naval history, using paintings, shipping equipment and instruments, models, the Golden Age and the VOC, and special sections for children of all ages. A major attraction is the replica of the 18th century tall boat Amsterdam.
SEA PALACE with her characteristic Chinese pagoda-style architecture, a landmark in the heart of Amsterdam. Specialties are the Cantonese cuisine.
