Heublein Tower At Talcott Mountain, Connecticut
Heublein Tower, originally referred to as Heublein Castle, was built by Gilbert Heublein as a summer home and gift to his wife-to-be. Today, the castle located atop Talcott Mountain, or as some would say Avon Mountain, on the Metcomet Trail, in Talcott Mountain State Park is a popular place to hike for panoramic views. I pieced together this footage after hiking up the trail on a crisp summer day. At the start of the first video footage, some background noise of others on the trail will be heard, but once I enter the castle, or tower if you prefer, the filming was relatively devoid of background voices though occasional natural echoing from the stone walls from within the castle are somewhat audible. I narrated the video footage while taking the clips and took some photos as well to insert when later stringing together the video footage. Today, the castle is listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites and is opened to the public in good weather usually starting Memorial Day at the end of May and running through to October when the park is in peak foliage for the autumn colors.
For those interested in when the castle was first built, construction started in 1914 and ended in 1917. The castle was modeled to look like a Bavarian Castle, which explains its towering height and narrow structure.
Some additional information from the Talcott Mountain State Park's website provides information about Talcott Ridge, where Heublein Tower is located:
The 1,000-foot high promontory provides a splendid view of the Connecticut landscape. On the horizon, Mount Monadnock, eighty miles away in New Hampshire, is discernible. To the northwest, the Berkshires dominate the horizon. Long Island Sound is revealed as a thin blue streak to the south. Those with sharp vision can see an area estimated to be 1,200 square miles.

A visit to the Heublein Tower in Simsbury, CT may not be for everyone -- in fact it may be one of the toughest museums in the State of Connecticut to get to. Reaching the tower requires a mile and a half long hike up Talcott Mountain. Then, visitors still need to climb 120 to reach the tower's observation deck. But the reward is a breathtaking, a 360-degree view of the Farmington River Valley. That view is most definitely worth the trip, according to Connecting Point Producer Dave Fraser, who made a visit there recently and shares the story.

Gilbert Heublein was a magnate in the area of food and beverage, most notably as manufacturer of A.1. Steak Sauce and Smirnoff vodka; he founded Heublein Inc.[3]
While hiking with his then-fiancé Louise M. Gundlach on Talcott Mountain, he promised her that one day he would build her a castle there.

Talcott Mountain Fall Foliage at Heublein Tower
See 4 states' beautiful autumn foliage from atop the observation tower at Heublein Castle on Talcott Mountain in Talcott State Park along the Metacomet Trail. The autumn in New England is spectacular, and the views from atop the castle, at 1,165 feet elevation, offer panoramas of mountains, valleys, farmlands, and rivers.
Full Hike (WM/S): The Fourth Tower on Talcott Mountain (Simsbury, Connecticut)
A couple of liquid concoctions are associated with Heublein, but this is the only commonality. Everything else considered, the two cannot be more diametrical. One pulls no punches with a sharp, acidic bite. It is often liberally slathered on and enhances already enticing pieces of steak everywhere. The other is subdued, colorless, and flavorless—advantageously adapts to whatever substances introduced. Indeed, the latter is meant to be drunk neat.
The pair is steak sauce and vodka, of course. Both, at one time, distributed by the Heublein family, who also built the structure of their namesake. Yet they were not tower-on-Talcott-Mountain pioneers. Three more doomed creations previously stood—the current one almost suffered the same end, before being rescued by a nonprofit and the state of Connecticut.
A ballroom, located high on the top floor, is now a 360-degree observation deck, which allows visitors to survey over most of the state. Noteworthy sights include a prominent ridgeline to the north that ends with Mount Tom in Massachusetts (sharp eyes can even glimpse Grand Monadnock, much farther away in New Hampshire). Looking east reveals clusters of buildings in Hartford, the state capital. Farmington Valley flanks the west side. Finally, the view south reaches Long Island Sound and beyond.

My Thoughts:
Some guides recommended hiking the optional cliffside trails, which I explored but found the views very limiting. The two most difficult, but brief, sections: the start and actually climbing the tower. Because the building opened at 10 AM and the Tower Trail was short, I had plenty of time to enjoy the grounds and views. The tower sat adjacent to the corner of three towns (Simsbury, Avon, and Bloomfield); a post indicating as such was just south of the picnic area.
From the observation room, I could not make out Bear Mountain in the far northwest corner of the state (the notes indicated looking left of the Ethel Walker Steeple; no luck there). I was able to locate Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. Unfortunately, the video poorly captured it. I had wanted to link this hike to both of those crests. However, there is another possible connection, depending on logistics.

Nature Walk - Heublein Tower, Simsbury, CT
The Heublein Tower in Simsbury, CT is a great destination to walk to. The slides start out at the Simsbury Sycamore, the largest tree in CT, which grows next to the Farmington River. Gradually the views climb the hill to the tower where you get to see inside the tower itself and the lovely 360 degree views of the valley and all the way to the city of Hartford .
The Tower is located in Talcott Mountain State Park. This is a 500 acre wooded park with lots of walking trails.

If you fly the same mission with your drone over and over, will the footage be close enough to be able to overlap in post processing? Yes and no. The small differences in altitude and angle is enough to throw things off to overlap (unless you are lucky) - but you can still do some nice things with the footage. The idea here was to capture the different stages of fall foliage on Talcott Mountain - from the very early, mostly green stage of late September to the very late, copper golds of early November.
