Google: From a garage in Silicon Valley to the New York Stock Exchange
Welcome to Finest News.
Subscribe to the channel at
Google, born in September 1998, turns 20 on Monday with a press conference in San Francisco. Simple search engine initially, it is now one of the most powerful multinationals on the planet, which garners billions and ... critics.
- From the engine to the car -
In the mid-1990s, two students from Stanford University in Silicon Valley (West), Larry Page and Sergei Brin, had an idea to improve internet search.
Search engines already exist but both men have an idea, which will prove to be revolutionary. Until Google, systems ranked search results by counting the number of times the search keywords appear on the page. Page and Bryn improve this system by analyzing the relationships between web pages (such as the number of links that point to a particular page), which helps to better determine their relevance. The idea will turn out to be revolutionary and gradually crush the competition.
On September 4, 1998, they officially founded the Google company, housed in a garage in Menlo Park, Silicon Valley, California. The name is a reference to the mathematical term gogol or googol, which refers to the number written with a 1, followed by 100 zeros.
In 2004, the head office is located in Mountain View and Google goes public in August.
Over the years, Google has launched many products, such as Maps, Gmail, Android mobile operating system, Chrome browser ... Google has also bought the YouTube video sharing platform in 2006.
At the end of 2015, the group restructures and is created a parent company, Alphabet, to oversee Google but also other subsidiaries, such as Verily (health), Waymo (autonomous cars), or Deep Mind (artificial intelligence) ...
Google is now one of the best-known brands in the world and has even gone into everyday language, with the neologisms googling and googliser, namely look for something on Google.
In recent years, Google also manufactures devices, like home connected speakers and smartphones Pixel.
Google has also experienced some disappointments, such as its social network Google+ or the first generation of connected glasses Google Glass.
- Billions of advertising -
Its business model is the same as Facebook: advertising, targeted closer to users through the personal data of users, recovered and milled by its algorithms. According to the eMarketer projections the two behemoths are expected to capture 57.7% of revenues from digital advertising in the United States this year.
In 2017, Alphabet's revenue reached $ 111 billion, almost entirely from Google. The group employs more than 80,000 people worldwide.
In the second quarter of 2018, it earned $ 32.7 billion in revenue and $ 3.2 billion in net profit, burdened by a fine from the European Union. Aside from this penalty, he made a profit of $ 8.3 billion.
- Criticism, controversy and fines -
Google is in the sights of regulators, especially in the European Union, usually because of dominance in internet search, advertising or mobile operating systems (Android equips about 85% of smartphones in the world).
Google received a € 2.4 billion European fine in 2017 for abusing its dominant position in online research by promoting its Google Shopping price comparison. This year, the EU sanctioned him again with a record fine of 4.34 billion euros for abuse of dominant position of Android.
The group said it intended to appeal.
Like Facebook, Google is also accused by the mainstream press of being its gravedigger, capturing readership and advertising revenue. Both groups also oppose the creation in the European Union of a neighboring right of copyright for the press, so that technology platforms pay better for the media for the articles they use.
In the United States, although less directly criticized than Twitter and especially Facebook, Google is also caught in several polemics, accused of not having struggled enough against political misinformation campaigns that abound on the internet.
Google is also in the sights of Republican President Donald Trump, who recently accused him of manipulating his research results to gag the conservative voices, which the company denies categorically.

Apple's First Computer Made Sold For 450 Times The Original Price (HBO)
A fully functioning Apple 1 hit the auction block last week at RR Auction in Boston and fetched $300,000 from an anonymous buyer — a relative steal for a highly coveted piece of computer history that helped launch a trillion-dollar company.
These pieces of machinery are extremely rare because only 200 were made in 1976. Of those original 200, there are only about 60 floating around in the world, and an even smaller number, closer to 15, are functional.
This particular Apple-1 was restored to its original, operational state by computer historian Corey Cohen. Cohen told VICE News, Not only is this thing 42-plus years old, but it still works and it works as well as it did back in the 1970s. He went on to explain, The easiest way to talk about the Apple 1 computer and where it came from is to understand a little bit about Steve Wozniak.
Steve Woz Wozniak was an engineer at Hewlett-Packard in the calculator division. He loved computers and was invigorated by the innovations in computers entering the market. Using parts from the HP office, he began working on his masterpiece before taking it to the Homebrew Computer Club in Palo Alto to show it to some of the other members.
His friend and fellow Computer Club member Steve Jobs loved it, and felt that he could use his knowledge from working at Atari to contribute some improvements to the assembly and production process. Jobs was sure he could find a way to sell them, and sell them he did.
With the initial funding from Apple-1 sales, Woz went on to design the Apple II — a machine that would be considered one of the greatest computers of all time.
