Hida Furukawa Folk Village
About 20 mins of walk, there is a Folk Village near the Takayama town. The village is publicly opened as a museum with a entry fee of 500 Japanese Yen. Inside the village, you can see a lot of their traditional buildings at Takayama. The view of the entire village is phenomenal. A very good place to relax and rewind the traditional Takayama culture.
In the evening, I went to Hida, another small town at Takayama area. The Hida town preserved a lot of the old Japanese buildings. It is a very unique small town which is filled with Japanese culture. There are very less people in town, but the view is super aesthetic, peaceful and harmony.

Hida Furukawa, Takayama, Japan, 飛騨古川 - Canon 80D - Virtual Trip
Lost in Gifu prefecture, just 15 minutes by train from Takayama city in Japan, the small town of Furukawa is a real pearl not to be missed. The peaceful atmosphere of the place will not leave you indifferent. The carpenters of Hida Furukawa, like those of Takayama, have worked on the construction of important temples throughout the region, and in the small town of Furukawa, as in Takayama, there are alleys with traditional wooden houses bearing the same names: ichi-no-machi, ni-no-machi and san-no-machi.

こんにちは、みんなさん！
I hope you guys are having a wonderful start to your weekend.
Before the month of May ended, I posted my blog about Shirakawago. This blog is a continuation of our Golden week road trip with K.
Now from Shirakawago, we had to drive along the Tokai-Hokuriku expressway thru the Hida Tunnel which is 10,712 kilometers long! We had no idea that K had to drive back and forth thru the second longest tunnel in Japan. (My information may not be updated but still a very long boring tunnel)
He confessed to me that the tunnel lulls him to sleep no matter how much he felt well rested.
As soon as we passed it, we took a break on the side of the road. So beware!
After taking a break we were soon on our way to Hida Furukawa which is the neighboring town of Takayama, still in Gifu prefecture.
Mind you, this was the Golden week in Japan. A week-long holiday for everybody so it looked to me like a deserted town.
If it weren’t high noon I’d be scared.
Luckily, some businesses are still open so we were able to eat our lunch there. It wasn’t anything special since we were saving our money and appetite for the Hida Beef Dinner.
Hida Furukawa owe it’s renowned landscape and architecture to their skillful carpenters called “Hida no Takumi”
It’s funny that translates to Lefthand craftsmen, Google could be wrong but they’re also known as Hida’s Master builders.
Apart from architecture, this place is also known for their Hadaka Matsuri every April just after the Sanno Matsuri in Takayama. They have floats with similar designs as well.
This place is also famous for Marriage/love visits. In the month of January, people make a three-temple pilgrimage in this Old Town. It’s namely, Enko-ji, Shinshu-ji and Honkou-ji. At night they have an event called “Thousand Candles” where people pray for love.
Speaking of “love” I saw a lot of posters of the animated movie called “Kimi no Na Wa”.
It turns out Hida Furukawa is one of the famous landmarks used as a background scene in the animation.
Another eye-catcher, at first I thought it’s an oddly looking sakura tree but it turns out to be pink dogwood trees. I’ve read online that the Dogwood tree was a gift from the US and the lone survivor out of the original saplings was in Setagaya, Tokyo.
In Japan, they call it ‘Hanamizuki’ and they are usually planted on the roadside. Come to think of it I have been seeing these trees along the streets of our town. However, they’re commonly color white in our area and not this pink.
All in all, I find Hida Furukawa quite serene. And to know which one I prefer between the Old Town of Hida Furukawa or the Old Town of Takayama, you better subscribe and watch out for my next blog!

Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum in Takayama that showcases traditional Gassho-Zukuri houses of Hida region. It is a great way to experience the traditional architecture of this region without going to Shirakawago.

Hida Furukawa Matsuri (Part 1) - Gifu - 飛騨古川祭 - 4K Ultra HD
Held each year during a three day period with its peak on April 19th and 20th, the Hida Furukawa Matsuri is not only an national treasure since it has been designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the government, but also an amazing festival (Matsuri) strong in color taking place as early as 7 am and up to very late at night around 2 to 3 am.
What’s unique here is not only the fact that this festival is actually divided into two different parts, but it is also one of Japan’s few festivals known for its rather intense tradition that often turns into involuntary accidents due to its own nature. During the first day (this video), known as the Okoshi Daiko, men, overflowed with emotions and energy, parade around the street with drums mounted on poles announcing the start of the festival.
Through the early start of Okoshi Daiko, men do not hesitate to display their skills and agility by performing “Tombo” or the dragonfly dance where you will see them literally flying and dancing on top of poles. Then at dawn, every faction of Hida Furukawa gathers in the center of the city for a “Gentleman” fight where the goal is for each faction to stay as close as possible to the main Taiko drum mounted on top of a float carried by close to hundred people.

Durant 3 jours par an, avec un pic le 19 et le 20 Avril, se tient le Matsuri de Hida Furukawa qui n’est pas seulement un trésor national depuis qu’il a été désigné comme étant une propriété culturelle et folklorique important par le gouvernement, mais est également un impressionnant festival (Matsuri) haut en couleurs qui débute vers 7h du matin jusqu’au bout de la nuit vers 2 ou 3h du matin.
Outre son déroulement divisé en deux parties, ce qui rend ce festival unique est l'intensité de la tradition qui donne toute sa splendeur à l'événement à tel points que quelques accidents involontaire sont causés de par sa nature. Pendant le premier jour (vidéo d’aujourd’hui), connu comme l’Okoshi Daiko, des hommes paradent en projetant leurs émotions et leur énergie au travers de leur tambour monté sur une barre pour annoncer le début du festival.
Dès le démarrage d’Okoshi Daiko, les hommes n'hésitent pas à dévoiler leurs compétences acrobatiques en s’essayant au “Tombo” ou la danse des libellules; où vous les verrez littéralement s’envoler et danser du haut de leurs barres. Ensuite, à l’aube, chaque faction de Hida Furukawa se rassemble au centre ville pour un combat amical dont le but est de rester aussi près que possible du tambour Taiko principal monté sur un char porté par une bonne centaine de personnes.

Hida-furukawa Game Overview
Hida-furukawa is a unique bidding and bluffing game set in an old Japanese town.
Being a merchant in the Edo period, you can make a difference to the quality of life of the people in Hida-Furukawa by setting up new stores on the street. The Emperor wanted to avoid any merchants to monopolise the city, therefore he approved for properties to be auctioned to the highest bidder. However, as in any society, some people will always have access to some information others don’t and they will try and use that to their advantage, tricking the competition into bidding too high or too low securing the building for themselves. But don’t underestimate your competitors for they too know something you don’t know!

Hida-Furukawa is located near Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, and about 30min. drive from Takayama. It has many old houses of Sake brewer and also has small stream with golden carps swimming.

Furukawa, like nearby Takayama, became prosperous in the Edo Period, due to the rich timber resources of the surrounding mountains, which include cedar, cypress, bamboo and pine.
A Visit to Takayama Old Town & Attractions Japan
On our visit to Takayama City in Japan, we visited various tourist attractions.
The most popular of course is the beautiful Takayama Old Town where you can find various Sake breweries around. We also visited the government building and shrines.
Takayama is pretty touristy but is a great place to explore! Make sure you try out the Takayama Hida Beef, but there is also plenty of other delicious Takayama food to try!
