Chiang Mai: A Guide to Traveling in Thailand
View our city guide video to see what it’s like to travel to Thailand. The city of Chiang Mai has it all, from peaceful temples to enthralling bazaars.
As the largest city in Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai packs in a lot. There’s no shortage of adventure in this city surrounded by mountains and dotted with temples. While there is certainly a lot to see and sample, Chiang Mai is considered a slightly sleepier, quieter town than its southern neighbor, Bangkok.
Chiang Mai takes great pride in retaining its traditions. The city’s spirituality remains a significant element of the Thai culture, and the town’s countless temples help keep its religious values alive. During your adventure in this part of Thailand, make a stop at the Wat Phra That on top of Doi Suthep. Built in 1383, the sacred temple was inspired by a local legend about a white elephant carrying a relic. While visiting the shrines, take a minute to soak up the sweeping views of Chiang Mai from the top of the Doi. Don’t stop at just one temple, though; there are hundreds of others located in and around Chiang Mai.
Exploring the markets is another way to get a taste of the Thai culture, and you’ll find some great eats at North Gate, South Gate, and Marorot Market, among countless others. The night markets, Chiang Mai Night Bazaar in particular, are exceptional places to sample the local fare and mingle with the locals. Slurp up some noodles and nosh on some stir-fried dishes, or brave something you’ve never tried before—crickets and mealworms, anyone? Along with authentic grub, you’ll find touristy souvenirs, home goods, clothing, and various other goods at this market, too.
Looking to discover more things to do in Chiang Mai? Consider visiting the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. This sanctuary includes a hospital that helps rehabilitate elephants that have been abused or injured. Take a tour of the facility to see elephants taking baths, painting with their trunks, and giving rides. A trip to this organization will provide insight into conservation efforts and scientific studies of these gentle giants.
When the travel bug starts to bite, consider a trip to Thailand. Our travel guide video gives a sneak peek into the captivating Chiang Mia tours available, from temples to markets. Check out our clip and start packing for a romp in Southeast Asia.

Our visit Chiang Mai travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums, fascinating temples and the city by day and evening when Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) comes alive at night. 20 Things to do in Chiang Mai, Thailand Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Today we’re taking you around a city that we’ve been to many times before: Chiang Mai. Located in the heart of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a growing city with laid back vibes, temples sprinkled around every corner, and a foodie scene that will make you drool. This is a destination where you come to unwind and that’s exactly what we did during our month long visit. Now let’s get started with this tour of Chiang Mai (清邁) so you can see what this city is all about:
One of the best things you can do in Chiang Mai is ditch the map and get lost inside the old city. It’s along the quiet back lanes that you’ll find cozy cafes, terracotta gardens, unvisited temples, and a little flavour of the old Chiang Mai.
As you’ve probably figured out, we’re not really into nightlife, but Chiang Mai does have lots of bars where you can enjoy a drink or two. We kept things light with a Chang beer.
And that’s a wrap for our visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand. We hope this video gave you a little taste of what this city is all about. We’ll be the first to tell you that we barely scratched the surface in terms of everything Chiang Mai (清迈) has to offer, but that being said, the goal of our time here was to relax, eat well, see friends, and catch up on work. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do, places to visit, and restaurants to eat at, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Until next time!
This is part of our Travel in Thailand video series showcasing Thai food, Thai culture and Thai cuisine.

Chiang Mai, Thailand | The World in 4K | Travel + Leisure
As the largest and most important cultural center in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai offers visitors lots of opportunities to see and do unusual things. Visit Chiang Mai for its majestic temples, bustling markets and bazaars, and breathtaking national beauty. Getting around the city is easy by walking, biking, or using public transportation. Explore either by yourself or with the help of an expert tour guide, especially if you’re concerned about getting lost in translation. When you travel to Chiang Mai, you’ll find some of Thailand’s greatest cultural treasures, with a more laid-back atmosphere than Bangkok’s.

Chiang Mai Road Trip - Samoeng Loop
Looking for the best Chiang Mai Road Trip? Take a motorbike around the Samoeng Loop, 2 hours surrounding Doi Suthep National Park. On your way, you can catch the Mae Sa Waterfall, enjoy scenic overlooks, and maybe stop at this secret coffee shop we found with the best views in Chiang Mai Thailand!
If you’re looking for fun things to do in Chiang Mai, a road trip (or motorbike trip) should be high on your list. Unlike the Mae Hong Son loop which takes multiple days and is difficult for a short holiday in Chiang Mai, the Samoeng loop only takes 2 hours and has amazing stops along the way!
If you start on the Samoeng loop heading North, you can reach the Mae Sa Waterfall in just 30 minutes by motorbike. Although this isn’t on the top list of the most impressive waterfalls in Chiang Mai, Mae Sa waterfall has 10 different mini waterfalls that you can hike to and look at. Fall #5 you can even swim in and have a picnic by, which is a popular local activity for Thai’s and tourists alike.
To get the best views in Chiang Mai, keep going on the Samoeng loop until you reach the middle which is an area called Samoeng Tai. Basically, you can pull over anywhere along this route and see amazing views of all of the hills and valleys surrounding Chiang Mai Thailand.
We were lucky enough to find a secret spot, with nobody else around, that had the best views in Chiang Mai! The place is a coffee shop and hotel called: น้องน้ำ รีสอร์ท. Now since we don’t speak Thai, I don’t know what that means so here is the address: น้องน้ำ รีสอร์ท Tambon Samoeng Tai, Amphoe Samoeng, Chang Wat Chiang Mai 50250
If you are looking to do an easy Thailand road trip then we highly recommend the Samoeng Loop! It’s a great Mae Hong Son Loop alternative and an easy day trip in Chiang Mai for those of you who only have a few days to see the sights. We suggest taking the Samoeng Loop to explore the Chiang Mai countryside and all the beautiful Thai nature. Although you can rent a car, your best bet is to rent a motorbike in Chiang Mai for the day to take you on this route. Ours was only $9 USD for an entire 24 hours.
If you have questions about this Chiang Mai road trip, want more travel tips in Chiang Mai, or are curious about Chiang Mai travel in general, feel free to watch our other Thailand travel vlogs! We provide useful travel guides for the places we visit and have spent 4 months in Thailand sharing the best places to visit, both on and off the tourist trail. Please subscribe if you aren’t already and we will see you guys in the next video. Seeya!
* We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Chiang Mai - Cinematic Travel Film // Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand
Why you should visit Chiang Mai?
Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai unexpectedly redefined the word “beautiful” for us. Doi Inthanon National Park ranges between 800 and 2565 meters with the highest peak which is the highest mountain in Thailand. If there is one place you have to go while in the Doi Inthanon National Park, it’s the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail.
Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail requires a guide at a price of 200 baht per group. But we quickly warmed up to the man who led us, a local Hmong hill tribesman who undoubtedly cared for and respected the mountain. Also Wachirathan Falls and Mae Klang Waterfalls are one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Doi Inthanon.
If you ever think of visiting Doi Inthanon anytime during the year, definitely plan for setting up a tent in the campsite.

What it's really like traveling alone (Chiang Mai Thailand)

Instagram: @BrockintheWorld

So after detouring to Manila, Philippines, to replace my emergency passport with an original passort, in lieu of traveling to Bali, I came back to Thailand to explore more of the northern provinces of Thailand. Now I am staying in a hotel in the Old City of Chiang Mai; today I talk about what it's really like solo traveling (I am solo traveling alone for several months around the world / south-east Asia)
I meet up with a vlogger friend here in Chiang Mai and we visit a Buddhist temple for a monk chat, to help monks practice English, then we head to Chiang Mai night market for some Thai street food.
Stay tuned- I have a lot planned for traveling northern Thailand to share with you!

1) Chiang Mai is famous for its night markets. We suggest starting off at the Sunday Night Market which is best explored from Thapea Gate. From handicrafts to silverware and from souvenirs to silks, you'll shop until you drop. In my opinion, an even better thing to do at the market is to indulge in as much Thai street food as possible.
2) Elephant tourism runs rampant in and around Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, the well being of the elephants is rarely a consideration. Visiting the Elephant Nature Park, known as an elephant sanctuary and rehabilitation center, is somewhere you can go to interact with elephants knowing full well they are being taken care of and not exploited. A trip to the park is a memorable experience that is both incredibly fun and extremely education.
3) From the roof of our apartment building we had often had unobstructed views of Doi Suthep. It was only a matter of time before we decide to take a Songthaew up to explore it on foot. Although it is very touristy, it is still well worth a visit - especially for the views of Chiang Mai!
4) Few cuisines are more famous around the world than Thai food. While you're in Chiang Mai be sure to take a cooking class to learn how to make all of your favorite Thai dishes. An even better idea is to go to the countryside where you can have a more authentic and rural cooking experience.
5) Although I love the Sunday Night Market my favorite night market in Chiang Mai happens on Saturday. Possibly because it is only a stone throw away from where we lived in Chiang Mai, I just enjoyed wandering through the maze of people and shops to eat as much Thai street food as possible.
6) You can't visit Chiang Mai without trying its most famous Northern Thai dish - Khao Soi. Crispy and soft noodles float around in a coconut milk base with various vegetables. It's delicious and one of the cheapest meal options in the city!
7) When you have time - and a friend to go with - reserve a table at a restaurant that specializes in Khantoke sets. Served with sticky rice and a plethora of small dishes you'll get a real sense of what Northern Thai food is all about.
8) Wander around the neighborhoods outside of the city center. A big part of why Chiang Mai is so charming has to do with its various neighborhoods. Get off the beaten path and just go explore around. Here we show you our neighborhood, which is not far from Chiang Mai South Gate.
