Hinchinbrook Island, located about 6km off the coast at Cardwell, a small town halfway between Townsville and Cairns in north Queensland, falls within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. Protected since 1932, it is one of Australia's largest island national parks.
Hinchinbrook's rugged 400sq.km landmass has been shaped by the seasonal rains and tidal swells of the Wet Tropics. An intricate network of creeks and waterways threads across the island; swollen with monsoon rainwater during the humid summer months, they give birth to falls that thunder through the island's rock country. During the winter months, the waterways gradually drain and evaporate, leaving many creeks dry. On Hinchinbrook's coastline, sweeping beaches, mangrove-fringed forests and rocky headlands meet the Coral Sea.
Twice a day, its tides fill and drain the island's inlets and tidal channels. Known for its varied ecosystems, Hinchinbrook is home to heath-covered mountains, melaleuca and palm wetlands, eucalypt and casuarina woodlands, and lush, tropical rainforests. Its mangrove forests, fringing reefs and seagrass beds are important habitats for fish and marine species, such as snubfin dolphins, dugongs and green turtles, as well as saltwater crocodiles.

The island’s cloud-covered mountains support fragile heath vegetation. Rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-lined channel in the west with bays, beaches and rocky headlands along the east coast.
Hinchinbrook Island lies east of Cardwell and north of Lucinda, separated from the northern coast of Queensland, Australia by the narrow Hinchinbrook Channel. Hinchinbrook Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and wholly protected within the Hinchinbrook Island National Park, except for a small and abandoned resort. It is the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef. It is also the largest island national park in Australia.

There's no doubting that Hinchinbrook Island is a big draw. It's been a National Park since 1932 and as a result it's an untouched, pristine part of Australia that has to been seen to be believed. There are not many other locations where you can swim under a tropical waterfall!
While Tim takes a dip, Brooke heads to Kurramine Beach Holiday Park. Facilities include a water park, swimming pool and bike hire. Of course Brooke had to jump into the pool (and try out the water slide). There are 42 sites and 14 cabins at this intimate Top Tourist Park.

Hinchinbrook Island Explored - Part 1/2
Hinchinbrook Island National Park, and the several small surrounding islands, are one of tropical North Queensland's most picturesque spots. Located between Townsville and Cairns, the area is home to beautiful sandy beaches, dense island forests, mangroves, mountains and crystal clear waters. What more can you ask for.
In August 2009, several mates and I hired a houseboat for a week to explore and enjoy this little piece of Australian paradise. We explored the Northern end of Hinchinbrook island and the several islands to the north. An adventure in the making.

Hinchinbrook Island has some of the most dramatic coastlines in all of Queensland. We share how to get to Hinchinbrook Island including Zoe Bay, the Thorsborne Trail and Zoe Falls.
Anchoring in Zoe Bay is like right out of a scene from Jurassic Park, with towering mountain peaks rising 1000m up from the sea. The gem of Zoe Bay is a trek at the southern end of the beach that winds through the rainforest to the majestic Zoe Falls. There's so much to see and explore....

If you want to visit Hinchinbrook, you'll need your own boat or take the ferry service that drops off hikers for Thorsborne Trail, a 32km trek that traverses the island.

A very long 19 hour day exploring the Great Barrier Reef north west of Townsville and Hinchinbrook Island.

Hinchinbrook Island resort could be reborn as tourist glamping destination.
Since its closure in 2010, the largely forgotten resort site on Hinchinbrook Island has almost been consumed back into the natural environment.
It was the only accommodation on the national park island, but over the past eight years has been smashed by Cyclone Yasi, looted by vandals and destroyed by fire.
But WA businessman Adam Tree wants to turn the resort site into an international glamping drawcard and has entered into negotiations with the Queensland Government.
Mr Tree said he was inspired to rebuild the eco-resort after first visiting four years ago.
I fell in love with the place and it didn't matter how dilapidated it was, it's just incredible — this island and what it has to offer the world — and I just can't believe no-one had taken it up, he said.
Every time I come back here it's more and more degraded. Somebody has to take control of it, somebody has to step up.
There are so many things here that I could see when I first walked in from WA that I said, 'This is me, I don't need any more'.Mr Tree has a background as an electrician and currently owns a company supplying products to the mining and resources industry.
He said he planned to rebuild the site for glamping-style tents that could be packed away in the event of a cyclone.
Nothing is set is stone but there are a number of different glamping style options. You've got bell tents, Springbok tents that are from South Africa, you've got other Canadian-style tents, he said.
We want to bring it back and rehabilitate the area because it's clearly in a state that it shouldn't be, and hopefully build it to be a world-class eco-resort.
Mr Tree has entered into a contract with FTI Consulting, which has handled the resort lease since former owner Williams Corporation collapsed in 2013.
Island encumbered with past debt
But acquiring the lease means also dealing with hundreds of thousands of dollars of incumbrances owed to state and local governments from previous owners.
Mr Tree said it should not be up to new owners to pay for someone else's debts.We're looking at this — [the lease] has a rates and levy incumbrance for the past 10 years of nearly $800,000, he said.
So not only is it $800,000 but we've got to rehabilitate this area.
If we kept getting treated like a business that has to pay for someone else's problems and debts and legacies, then we can't move forward on some of the innovative things we'd like to do.
A Department of Natural Resources Mines and Energy spokesman said Mr Tree's request to waive the fees was being considered.
The department supports responsible and sustainable development on Hinchinbrook Island, the spokesman said.
Of the 20 resorts operating on perpetual leases over state land, five are currently in rental arrears.
'We need a tourism boost'
Cassowary Coast Councillor Glenn Raleigh said they were also open to discussions with Mr Tree.
We're certainly welcoming a lot of investors We're certainly supportive of those people as long as they can give us the details and that everything falls into line with legislation and planning instruments that we have in place.
Councillor Raleigh said the nearby town of Cardwell needed a tourism boost.
Having the island back to its operation again is very important to the town for employment opportunities and also for the attraction of tourists, not only from domestic markets but from international markets as well.
Margaret Moorhouse from the Alliance to Save Hinchinbrook said while she respected Mr Tree's plans to restore the site she would rather see it returned to national park.
We want the island returned to its natural state which would mean no more lessees on that lease, she said.
The proposals that Adam Tree has made are certainly of a very different character to a previous developer, so in one way we are pleased that's the case.
He has said he would keep — what he's calling the retreat — within the bounds of this area, so like everybody else, we live in hopes of that respect.

Why this trail? “One of the truly untouched environments of Australia… and the planet. Only 40 people can multi-day hike the trail at one time, and it’s one place I’d never been in Queensland.”
Rate it? “Unbelievable. True Queensland trails, isolated beaches, rainforest, headlands. You feel lost on an island in the middle of the ocean, but in reality, you’re 7km away from the mainland.”
Location: Trail is on the eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island the tropical paradise of Australia’s largest island national park. 2hrs north of Townsville off the Queensland Coast.
Access: A chartered boat with Absolute North Charters from Lucinda boat ramp. A 2hr drive north of closest airport Townsville. ***You must have a QNP permit for John to take you to island.
Sleep: We stayed right across the road from Boat Ramp in Lucinda at Hinchinbrook Resorts Lucinda.
Terrain: Rocky headlands, elevated tramped rainforest tracks, creek crossings and long-isolated beach stretches. Queensland at it’s very best.

Hinchinbrook Island - Thorsborne Trail
Thorsborne Trail south to north. Show more of the description to see links to specific parts of the journey. This video was filmed on the GoPro Hero 5 using the Feiyutech G5 gimbal. The run/hike started at George point after a short boat trip from Lucinda. We made our way along the Thorsborne Trail including an ascent of Nina Peak before meeting the boat for the journey back to Lucinda. The track is rugged and at times difficult to find. Travelling light was easier on the ankles than carrying a 15 or 20 kg backpack. The footage is a bit hard on the eyes at times but hopefully it gives you some appreciation of the technicality of the track as well as its beauty. An amazing trail. If you are going to do the trail please plan carefully as weather conditions can change quickly.
