Maple Grove Hindu temple rallies around Sikh community
At the Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove this week, priests chanted the Shantipath, a Hindu mantra for peace, as dozens of people gathered and joined in with prayers for those of the Sikh faith.
Less than a week after the fatal shootings of six worshippers at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., the Hindu community of Minnesota wanted to show solidarity with their brothers and sisters in the Sikh faith.
Their pain is not the Sikh community's pain, it's the pain of all Americans, said Dr. Shashikand Sane of the Hindu Society of Minnesota. We must recognize we human beings are all interconnected. We are all brothers and sisters.
It was a moving gesture for members of the Sikh Society of Minnesota, who were also attended the Maple Grove prayer vigil.
The outpouring of support and sympathy really touched us, said Kehar Singh of the Sikh Society of Minnesota. There is more good in this world than bad.
Congregants of the Hindu temple in Maple Grove have experienced their own challenges in faith. In 2006, the temple was vandalized and sacred statues were smashed while it was under construction.
In the time of need and crisis, it is important, absolutely essential, mandatory that we get together and support them, said Sane. We do the prayers because prayers do the comfort and the strength.
As the prayer vigil came to an end, members of the Hindu and Sikh religions shared one prayer for the community.
We have to move on, not be afraid, said Singh.
The Sikh Society of Minnesota is holding its own prayer meeting and candlelight vigil for victims of the Wisconsin shootings this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at its Bloomington temple.

Hindu Temple of Minnesota to go Solar
he Hindu Temple of Minnesota is a step closer to becoming more energy efficient.
The Maple Grove City Council approved a conditional use permit for the temple to build a solar array on their property. Arrays are typically an allowed use, but the nonprofit had to get a permit because the array will be located in a flood plain. The size of the array will be about an acre.
“Today we’re requesting a unique facility for this temple, essentially renewable energy so we don’t have to use the fossil fuels to electrify this facility,” said Puttaiah “Byron” Byraiah, who represented the Temple before the city council.
A temple spokesperson says the array will not be visible to people off the property. The Hindu Temple of Minnesota hopes this could eventually help them meet all of their energy needs.

In The States: Minnesota
In 2011, The Advocate named Minneapolis-St. Paul the gayest city in America. But for all the acceptance some LGBT Minnesotans experience, opposition to equality is strong here. IN THE LIFE exposes public school policies that silence the LGBT experience, rampant harassment of LGBT students and looks at the State's proposed initiative to limit marriage to heterosexual couples.
Maple Grove high schooler already accepted to medical school
There's at least one future physician in this year's graduating class at Maple Grove High School.
Senior Rajiv Dharnipragada has already been accepted into medical school at the University of Minnesota. More on that piece of Dharnipragada's story later, but it's helpful to know that this 18-year-old student started taking math classes at the University of Minnesota as a kid.
I have a really strong relationship with the U. It started in fifth grade, I started in algebra 1 and then finished in tenth grade in calculus 3, said Dharnipragada.
Dharnipragada graduated in 10th grade from the University of Minnesota's Talented Youth Mathematics Program, an accelerated program for students gifted in math. After completing the program, Dharnipragada started working on research projects at the University in plant biology, oncology and neuroscience. But being gifted in math and science isn't the only thing you need to know about this young man.
He's just a very compassionate, and you don't always see that combination with somebody that is so gifted academically and driven to go into medicine, said Jennifer Hamel of Maple Grove's College and Career Center. You just know they're going to have great bedside manner and [be] good with people.
Dharnipragada understands the importance of humanities in medicine.
In a clinical setting, I would say that the communication skills and the doctor patient interaction is just as important as the science, said Dharnipragada.
He's learned it in part by watching his parents.
My mom is a classical Indian dance teacher and just watching her being able to influence so many lives with arts is amazing, said Dharnipragada.
Now back to medical school. Dharnipragada is one of just ten students accepted into a new accelerated seven year program at the University of Minnesota. It will result in undergrad and medical school degrees, increasing the odds that this future doctor might one day treat you and me.
I give the University of Minnesota credit for trying to keep these high achieving students because he was accepted to many other programs and could've left us, so I'm so glad he's staying in our state, said Hamel.
Dharnipragada is working to become a neurosurgeon.

Largest MN city solar project begins in Brooklyn Park
Brooklyn Park's ambitious solar energy plan is underway. The city is installing panels in selected buildings, making it the largest solar project ever conducted by a Minnesota city.
Our solar journey has been over a year in the making, said Dan Ruiz, Brooklyn Park's director of operations and maintenance. Multiple meetings with the council. Public meetings for our residents to see what we're looking at. It culminated just this fall.
Cedar Creek Energy is installing the solar panels, which are designed to work in any kind of weather conditions.
Think of a solar powered calculator, Ruiz said. They still work in your household. They get some ambient solar light. Same thing with this. They are generating power even on cloudy days just at the right peak power on a nice bright sunny day.
There is no upfront cost for the city. A Minnesota Department of Commerce grant made helped fund the solar installation, which is expected to save Brooklyn Park a minimum of $60,000 in energy costs after one full year of production.
The grant money goes right towards the capital cost of the solar facilities and we get a nominal reduction in our solar costs, Ruiz said.
The first building with solar panels is Brooklyn Park's main fire station. There are 124 panels on the roof that will be used to power 80 percent of the building. Ruiz said he expects the city to save $1,000 in electrical costs at the fire station over a one-year period.
The other locations in Brooklyn Park getting solar panels are the main police station, Community Activity Center, water treatment plant and three buildings at the Operations and Maintenance facility.
