The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, or Ballard Locks, is a complex of locks at the west end of Salmon Bay, in Seattle, Washington's Lake Washington Ship Canal, between the neighborhoods of Ballard to the north and Magnolia to the south.[2]:2[3][4]:6
The Ballard Locks carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the US, and the Locks, along with the fish ladder and the surrounding Carl S. English, Jr., Botanical Gardens attract more than one million visitors annually, making it one of Seattle's top tourist attractions.[5]:7–8 The construction of the locks profoundly reshaped the topography of Seattle and the surrounding area, lowering the water level of Lake Washington and Lake Union by 8.8 feet (2.7 m), adding miles of new waterfront land, reversing the flow of rivers, and leaving piers in the eastern half of Salmon Bay high and dry.[5] The Locks are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the American Society of Civil Engineers Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. One at a time through Ballard Locks - Seattle, Washington
We arrived just in time to see pleasure boats rise to the occasion. The official name is Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, but is known locally as the Ballard Locks after the neighborhood to the north. The locks can elevate a 760-foot by 80-foot wide vessel 26 feet, from the level of Puget Sound at a very low tide to the level of freshwater Salmon Bay, in 10--15 minutes. The locks handle both pleasure boats and commercial vessels, ranging from kayaks to fishing boats returning from the Bering Sea to cargo ships. Over 1 million tons of cargo, fuel, building materials, and seafood products pass through the locks each year.

Northern Victor at the Ballard Locks
Capturing the Northern Victor going through the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks that is Alaska bound.
History of the Northern Victor:
The Northern Victor is the largest of Icicle's processing vessels at 8902 gross tons. She was built in 1945 as the cargo vessel Marengo in Wisconsin for the U.S. war effort. Released from the U.S. Reserve Fleet, she was converted in 1972 to the oil well drilling ship Ocean Cyclone in Beaumont, Texas, adding a drilling tower and other drilling related equipment, a new engine room, 40 feet in length and 20 feet in beam to bring her to present dimensions of 380 feet long and 70 feet wide. After a successful career drilling for oil in the Middle East and South America, the vessel was retired in Brazil in 1986. Previous owners took the vessel to South Africa for removal of drilling related equipment in 1988. The Northern Victor was returned to the United States and converted to a fish processing vessel in Panama City, Florida, in 1989 and 1990. Since July 1990 the Northern Victor has operated in Alaska and produced various seafood products as the second largest processing vessel in the United States fishing industry. Icicle acquired the Northern Victor in late 1999 and subsequently completed major processing equipment additions and improvements that have made her the most versatile processing vessel in the U.S. industry. With quarters for 222 crew members she processes Alaskan Pollock at her primary operating base in the Aleutians Islands near Dutch Harbor. An onboard rendering plant produces a high quality fish meal and fish oil from the normal processing waste by-products and insures a maximum recovery from the purchased fish. Her home base is in Seattle, WA.

Belltown is the most densely populated neighborhood in Seattle, Washington, United States, located on the city's downtown waterfront on land that was artificially flattened as part of a regrading project. In 2003, Xfinity Arena (then known as Everett Events Center), effectively opened Everett to tourism. The $83 million arena continues to host events, once exclusive to Seattle's KeyArena, to present day.

Army Corps, USCG to host spill exercise near Ballard Locks May 11
SEATTLE – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Coast Guard officials will host a joint Boom Deployment and Spill Response Exercise just west of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard May 11.
The exercise will depict a large oil spill threatening wildlife, aquatic species, shoreline habitat and nearby infrastructure. USCG 13th District Response and Advisory Team (DRAT) will instruct Corps’ personnel how to deploy containment booms from the Corps’ Marine Vessel Puget in accordance with the Northwest Area Contingency and Geographic Response Plans to capture and isolate the spill.

We believe, Seattle is quite an underrated place and was a big surprise for us! Here are the Top Things I liked doing in Seattle.
#1. Space Needle (00:20 ) - The Space Needle is a tall tower near downtown Seattle. It was constructed in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World Fair. This is a must visit place in settle. City pass covers 2 visits which you can plan for daylight timings and evening timing. In clear days you can view the Olympic Mountains and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker and Elliott Bay from space needle.
#2. Pike Place Market (1:15) - First Starbucks, Piroshky Piroshky, La Panier - Pike place market is an old fish and fresh produce farmers market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront. You can visit the first Starbucks here in this market. You can also do a free walking tour which starts from very close to this market. Piroshky Piroshky is a must visit Russian bakery just beside Starbucks. Do try their Apple cinnamon roll.
#3. Mount Rainier (2:49) - Must visit place if you have a full day in hand while visiting Seattle. It takes time to reach here and you need your own transport or you can take a tour. It takes roughly 2-3 hours to reach this place and you should plan to spend as much time possible. Do try Blueberry Pie at Copper creek restaurant ( while coming back :-)
#4. Woodland Park Zoo (3:44) - Good for half a day. We saw lion, penguins, komodo dragon, tropical birds, flamingos, giraffes etc
#5. Pacific Science Center (4:58) - Interesting activities for kids as well as adults
#6. Harbour Cruise (5:47) - Amazing view of Seattle skyline
