広島市郷土資料館 Hiroshima city museum of history and traditional crafts

Today, boutiques, shops, cafes, restaurants and a few museums line up along the district's narrow lanes.

Nara Koen (Park) 奈良公園 - Japan part 2
Nara Park (奈良公園 Nara Kōen) is a public park located in the city of Nara, Japan, at the foot of Mount Wakakusa, established in 1880. Administratively, the park is under the control of Nara Prefecture. The park is one of the Places of Scenic Beauty designated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Over 1,200 wild sika deer (シカ or 鹿 shika) freely roaming around in the park are also under designation of MEXT, classified as natural treasure. While the official size of the park is about 502 hectare, the area including the grounds of Tōdai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, and Kasuga Shrine, which are either on the edge or surrounded by Nara Park, is as large as 660 ha.
According to local folklore, deer from this area were considered sacred due to a visit from Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto, one of the four gods of Kasuga Shrine. He was said to have been invited from Kashima, Ibaraki, and appeared on Mt. Mikasa riding a white deer. From that point, the deer were considered divine and sacred by both Kasuga Shrine and Kōfuku-ji. Killing one of these sacred deer was a capital offense punishable by death up until 1637, the last recorded date of a breach of that law.
After World War II, the deer were officially stripped of their sacred/divine status, and were instead designated as national treasures and are protected as such. Today, visitors can purchase deer-crackers (鹿煎餅 Shika-senbei) to feed the deer in the park. These crackers are exclusively sold by the WNOW company.
Spirit of Peace by Bottega
Annually on 6th August, the world commemorates the colossal devastation caused by the atomic bomb dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. On the 70th anniversary, Sandro Bottega – owner and managing director of Bottega S.p.A. - paid a visit to the Hiroshima Peace Museum. Deeply moved by this call, he met the city mayor Kazumi Matsui to hand a million yen donation and a blown glass bottle containing a hand-made dove, universal symbol of peace.
Mr. Matsui, impressed by the initiative, offered the opportunity to exhibit an artwork in three local museums. Hence, Sandro Bottega started working on an exhibition named “Spirit of Peace”. The project, developed with the support of the municipality of Hiroshima, will be exhibited from 25th November until 10th December 2017 in three prestigious sites: Hiroshima MOCA, Hiroshima Museum of Art, Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum.
The three museums will showcase historical collection of artistic blown glass bottles produced by Bottega, and two majestic art pieces, designed by Sandro Bottega and created by Master Glassblower Pino Signoretto from Murano and the masters glassblowers at the Alexander Bottega artistic glassworks.
With these artworks, Bottega wishes to remember the horrific bomb strike, in hope to exorcise the fear of atomic wars, and to raise awareness on peace, the most important asset for mankind. To further enhance the possible reach of this project, and raise more proceedings to donate, Bottega carried out a no-profit charity project, producing three new dedicated products:
• “Peace for the World”: a wine bottle dedicated to world peace; it features the profile of a white dove on the label, and contains Bottega white sparkling brut Venezia DOC wine produced from Glera, Chardonnay and Pinot grapes (cl.75).
• “Peace for Hiroshima”: a precious, artistically handcrafted bottle featuring a white dove as a symbol of peace; it is both a tribute to Hiroshima city and a warning against the war, and contains Alexander Prosecco grappa (cl.35)
• “Hiroshima for World Peace”: this gift box contains both products “Peace for the World” and “Peace for Hiroshima”.
Since its establishment in 1977, Bottega advocates Social Responsibility towards the environment and the community. Sensitive to global social issues, from time to time Bottega has created themed bottles to mark or celebrate events that have left a deep trace in the history of mankind.
“Spirit of Peace: Art in Grappa at MOCA - Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (
Artistic exhibition of 50 historical Bottega blown glass bottles.
The Art in Grappa collection is an anthology of the artistic bottles made in blown glass by Bottega, over the past 30 years. Each bottle has been designed by Sandro Bottega, who found his main inspiration in the Muranese tradition of glass blowing. Some of these bottles are 1-meter-tall giant creations.
“Spirit of Peace: Rebirth of Hope” at Hiroshima Museum of Art
Artwork by Bottega & Pino Signoretto (
The artwork consists in a blown glass transparent dove (of nearly one metre) created by Master Pino Signoretto, surrounded by a hundred drop-shaped “bottles” containing green buds made in blown glass, created by the masters glassblowers at the Alexander Bottega artistic glassworks
The transparent dove, whose pose suggests it is “waiting for peace”, represents the rebirth of hope; while the surrounding glass drops symbolize the tears which turn into rain that nurtures life, embodied by the buds.
“Spirit of Peace: Flight for Peace” at Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum
Artwork by Bottega & Pino Signoretto
The artwork consists in a white blown glass dove (of nearly one meter), created by Master Pino Signoretto, surrounded by a hundred drop-shaped “bottles”, 50 of which feature Japanese flowers within themselves, created by the masters at Alexander Bottega blown glass factory.
The white dove finally takes flight to bring its message of peace and brotherhood to the world. The glass drops feature the flowers of oleander and camphor, which represent hope and strength and were elected respectively City Flower and City Tree of Hiroshima.
From Castle to Palace: Samurai Architecture
Japan's warlords built fortresses during the constant civil warfare from 1300 to 1600. These castles housed the local government, had many defensive devices, and impressed rivals with their scale and their lord's ability to have them built and maintained.

Japanese Knife & Sword City: Seki Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Traveling for KNIVES and SWORDS! The Japanese knife is quite simply the best in the world. The place best known for them is Seki (関市) in Gifu where Japanese Samurai swords have been forged for over 700 years. That tradition continues today in its knives and cutlery. They're perfect.
Following World War 2, the city changed from forging the katana to producing some of the world's best knives and cutlery. So, I ended up at Seki Station recently -- to buy the best knife in Japan! Maybe even a samurai sword, too.
In this episode, John travels to Seki city in Gifu prefecture to check out the CUTLERY FESTIVAL known as the HAMONO MATSURI (刃物まつり) in Japan. Now only will you find over 43 knife makers selling their best at discounted prices, you'll see the most unique knives anywhere as well as Chanbara performances (Samurai Sword Fight Acting).
The most unique part of the Hamono Festuval is an authentic demonstration of traditional sword forging using Tamahagane Steel.
HOW MUCH IS A REAL SAMURAI SWORD?
They start at 400,000 to 600,000 Yen ($4,000 to $6000) and can go up to $20,000! We'll see swords being made in Seki.
HOW TO BUY A JAPANESE KNIFE:
There many things to consider such as the type of steel, the type of knife, it's balance and of course, it's price.
WHEN IS SEKI'S HAMONO CUTLERY FESTIVAL ( 刃物まつり ) ?
2019 October 12th and 13th (Saturday & Sunday)
URL: (English available)
* It takes place on the second weekend of October annually.
The knife I bought:
Mcusta ZANMAI Classic Pro Damascus Flame
Santoku 180mm ¥15,000 Festival Price
Hida Beef (Hida Gyu 飛騨牛) is one of Japan's top wagyu beef and worth trying in Gifu or the Nagoya area.
HOW TO GET TO SEKI:
Best is to rent a car. It's easiest to get around this way because trains don't leave often in the countryside and many places like Monet's Pond can be accessed only by infrequent buses.
By Train, it's a short and scenic ride from Nagoya Station or Gifu Station.

THANK YOU!
I want to say ARIGATOU GOZAIMASU to Seki city and the wonderful people who helped me make this special episode. If you are interested in Seki, please check out their sightseeing page and feel free to contact them. They really want you to enjoy their hometown! -john
What is Damascus Steel?
Mr. Walter Sorrells made an excellent video on YouTube explaining it. I also learned more about knife making from his channel.
