広島電鉄の「被爆電車」こと651号 長寿の理由
整然と並ぶ路面電車の中に、「昭和」からタイムスリップしてきたような車両がたたずむ。車輪はサビと砂ぼこりが混ざったような色だが、レールと接する部分は鈍く光り、現役を主張している。
ここは、広島市内で路面電車を運行する広島電鉄(広島市中区)の千田車庫。このレトロな「651号」は、かつて広島に原爆が投下されたとき、爆心地から1キロ圏内で走行していた。「被爆電車」と呼ばれている。
カチャカチャと工具の音がする車両の下を見ると、係員が3カ月に一度の検査に格闘していた。
運転席はあくまでアナログだ。ワイパーは手動で、パンタグラフの高さはひもを引いて調整する。車体側面には小傷やひずみ、塗装のはがれがいくつも見え、窓枠にはひと目でわかる凹凸がある。検車係長の清水池和彦さんが「雨で腐食した部分を切り落として、パテで埋めるんです」と教えてくれた。
被爆時に扉や内装など木の部分が焼失し、鉄製の枠組みと台車だけが残った。塗装の厚みや数々の凹凸は、技術者たちが手間を惜しまず、改修・補修を重ねてきた証しだ。
焦土の記憶と古傷を刻み、広島のまちを走る651号。「生き証人」の軌跡は続いていく。

653号は江波で被爆し大破したと言われています(昭和20年8月6日)原爆被爆前後 広島市内電車運転の推移 長船友則(あき書房 2015年8月1日 発行)チンチン電車と女学生 1945年8月6日 ヒロシマ 堀川惠子 小笠原信之 講談社文庫と、広島の路面電車100年~今も昔も広島の街を路面電車が走っていく~広島市郷土資料館もあわせてどうぞ。

HIROSHIMA ELECTRIC RAILWAY CO., LTD. (Hiroshima Dentetsu Kabushiki-gaisha) is a Japanese transportation company established on June 18, 1910, that operates streetcars and buses in and around Hiroshima Prefecture. It is known as Hiroden (広電) for short.
The company's rolling stock includes an eclectic range of trams manufactured from across Japan and Europe, earning it the nickname The Moving Streetcar Museum.
The company accepts PASPY, a smart card ticket system, from January 2008.
Model 650 Hiroden built in 1942
Model 650 is widely known as the streetcar model which was running on August 6th when the Atomic bomb was dropped. All 5 of them got damaged from the bomb but they went back into service soon after being repaired. No.651 and No.652 are still in operation, No.654 which retired in 2006 is now kept at Numaji transportation museum.

The bombing killed 211 employees of the Hiroshima Electric Railway, and 108 of 123 streetcars were damaged. About forty people, including people from the Tokyo Telegraph Corps, began making emergency repairs. On August 9, three days after the bombing, shuttle service from Koi to Nishi-tenma-cho began, giving hope to many city residents.
