Scott: We come into town and I see this humongous body of water and I remember thinking in my mind, that is a needle in a haystack.
Jim: What was part of my journey here was the inspiration from great old places. My desire, after being unveiled to what really makes great places great, was to find a place to go to work on one of those neighborhoods.
Phil: To find this jewel in such a sweet town, has been pretty special. That’s what I’ve been very excited about. So I’ve spent most of my professional career trying to create homes that have the feel of an old house. The proper proportion, balance, scale, widows aligning, but modern interiors and modern floorplans.
Scott: In additional to being directly in a historic district, directly by the downtown, and then right on the waterfront it’s a new home. You think about the fact that you’re living in a new home.
Jim: So if you can get everything you want, reaction, place, other things of an old house, but have it in something brand new, that’s modern and energy efficient, and laid out just the way you want...wow!
Justin: And the location is unique too. To be able to be on the water, in a park, in the downtown, in the historic district, and that just be a 5 minute or 10 minute loop around the neighborhood. That’s not something you would experience in really any other small town.
One of the things you would appreciate about the community is you have this charming and quaint downtown, but you also have all the modern convenience. You see the great shops, you see the restaurants, you see the arts district and a vibrant artisan community.
Scott: We’ve had the pleasure of meeting all the store owners and just their excitement over the city of Washington and what is going on.
Leigh: Little Washington has the best people you’ll ever meet, and I know that you see that or hear that from other places, but it’s truly the best part about this town.
Mary Carolyn: The people in this town are genuinely very friendly nice people.
Ronald: Very quaint and it’s just a great place to live.
Jeff: It is the best place to live in the United States.
Sue: I just absolutely love it here.
Stuart: The people are what make this town.
Justin: One of the things you would quickly notice when you come to town is the amount of activity in the community.
Carol: Our kids grew up kayaking, water skiing, fishing; before they could drive they would get in a boat and come downtown and get ice cream. You always feel like somebody’s watching and looking after your children. And it’s an easy lifestyle.
Scott: We’ve got this convergence of these different factors and if you just remove one of those, you may be describing another place, but you’re not describing this place.

The Disappearing American Dialect of North Carolina
Hoi Toider, aka Ocracoke Brogue, is a dialect of American English spoken only on remote islands in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The unique accent and vocabulary developed over hundreds of years as a result of the area's isolation. Visitors often mistake the accent as foreign, but with origins dating back to the 1600s, Ocracoke Brogue is about American as it gets.

Getting To Know Somerset: A Brief History
Somerset Place was the third largest plantation in North Carolina, active from 1785 to 1865. In that time, over 861 enslaved persons lived and worked on the grounds, growing corn as the major cash crop. Three generations of the Collins family owned the plantation, but only one, that of Josiah Collins III, lived onsite. Today, Somerset Place is a State Historic Site managed by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. If you have any questions about this video, please comment below.

Somerset Place, once the third largest plantation in antebellum North Carolina and now a representative state historic site, is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Georeferenced Historic Maps and the Story of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Grandfather Mountain, NC
Dr. Anne Whisnant uses a geo-referenced 1940s-era historic map showing the proposed high route for the Blue Ridge Parkway at Grandfather Mountain, NC to dispel some myths about the long conflict between Hugh Morton and the National Park Service and state of North Carolina over the Parkway route. This video is a companion to the University of North Carolina Libraries' digital collection, Driving Through Time: The Digital Blue Ridge Parkway ( for which Dr. Whisnant is the scholarly advisor. Africa to Carolina
The legacies of the U.S. slave trade have extended well into present. The N.C. African American Heritage Commission seeks to explore this present-day legacy by looking to the past through its newest initiative, “Africa to Carolina.”
The “Africa to Carolina” initiative serves to identify, mark and develop resources around the primary sites in North Carolina where enslaved Africans disembarked. Eight port cities have been identified for the project, and the N.C. African American Heritage Commission will examine events leading up to and following those landings and consider how to better acknowledge these landings in meetings from January through March.
The project will engage in meaningful discussion about the legacies and the commemoration of slavery in North Carolina. Meeting participants will consider how individual communities can grapple with these legacies via public commemoration, public art and community discussion, among other things.
These meetings will be facilitated by Janeen Bryant, Principal and Founder of Charlotte-based organization Facilitate Movement, LLC. Bryant has received national acclaim for her work in creating spaces for honest and thought-provoking community dialogue.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture was catalyst for this project in North Carolina. The N.C. African American Heritage Commission is also being advised by the Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that is leading similar efforts across the United States.
Disembarkation ports in North Carolina were Bath, Beaufort, Brunswick, Currituck, New Bern, Plymouth, Roanoke and Wilmington. Africa to Carolina meetings also will be held in Bath, Plymouth, New Bern and Wilmington.
