MAC Party, Contemporary Art at OU Fred Jones Jr Museum of Art 2011
NORMAN, OKLA. -- The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art celebrated the
reinstallation of modern art with the help of some new friends. Austin band
White Denim and guest speaker Bill Goldston, director of Universal Limited Art
Editions New York, are just a few of the guests scheduled for the exhibition
opening, which starts at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 4.
As part of this fall's upcoming
opening of the new Stuart Wing and
reopening of the newly renovated
original building, the University of
Oklahoma's art museum is
reinstalling works of contemporary
and modern art from its permanent
collection. The Sandy Bell Gallery,
formerly the museum's location for such works, has been utilized as a rotating
exhibition gallery since construction began in spring 2009.
Our excitement for October's grand opening of the Stuart Wing is so contagious,
we can't wait to share it with the community, said Ghislain d'Humières,
director of the museum. We've packed so much into the June 4 weekend. If
you've never visited the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, this will be an
unforgettable event you will not want to miss.
Saturday's event began with a guest lecture by Goldston, who spoke about artist Robert Rauschenberg's relationship with art collectors Sash
and Mary Spencer. Mary Spencer recently gave the museum a collection of
works by the same contemporary artist. Following the lecture, choreographers
Derrick Minter and Lieneke Mous presented a special dance inspired by works
in the exhibition and performed by OU School of Dance students during the
opening reception.
Austin, Texas indie rockers White
Denim held a live concert on the museum's front
lawn, in collaboration with the Norman Music
Festival. The concert was made possible, in part, by
a grant from the Norman Arts Council Hotel Tax
Grant Program.
The opening weekend also served as a sign-up
party for the Museum Association's newest level,
the Metro Arts Circle (MAC). The MAC is geared towards 25-45-year-olds and
will host exclusive parties throughout the year featuring art, networking, special
guests and more.
After the concert, MAC hosted an after
party at Blackbird Gastropub on Campus Corner, just walking distance
from the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
The reinstallation of modern and contemporary art features works from the
museum's permanent collection, as well as works on loan from a private
collector. The exhibition includes works by Leon Polk Smith and Roy
Lichtenstein, as well as a rare Edward Ruscha painting depicting Oklahoma,
titled No Man's Land (1990), on loan courtesy of the artist.
Contemporary art often engages complicated issues of personal history, race
and sex as a means of fostering dialogue on how personal and group identity
interact with society, said Mark White, the Eugene B. Adkins Curator for the
museum. For instance, Edward Ruscha's No Man's Land recalls the artist's youth
in Oklahoma, and his lack of knowledge of life outside the state. Leaving
Oklahoma in his late teens became a pivotal moment in his personal and artistic
maturity as he explored the country beyond his familiar haunts.
The reinstallation also features a set of works by Rauschenberg called The Lotus
Series, the last series of works by the artist before his death in 2008. The series is a
recent gift by Mary Spencer.
The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is located in the OU Arts District on the corner
of Elm Avenue and Boyd Street, at 555 Elm Ave., on the OU Norman campus.
Admission to the museum is free to OU students with a current student ID and
museum association members, $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children 6 to 17
years of age, $2 for OU faculty/staff and free for military veterans with proof
and children 5 and under. The museum is closed on Mondays and admission is
free on Tuesdays. The museum's website is ou.edu/fjjma. Information and
accommodations on the basis of disability are available by calling (405) 325-4938.

Joe (Mixon) says no OU, & Yes NFL
On the field, he was a terrific player. However, it wasnt all good for Joe Mixon as an Oklahoma Sooner. On January 5, 2017, Mixon decided to declare for the NFL Draft, effective immediately. Though he only played for O.U. for 2 years, Mixon had a good college career, as a player. This past year, Mixon was a first team All-Big XII running back, and ran for 100 yards against Auburn, one of the best rush defenses in the country. But the night at Pickleman's cafe, on Campus Corner in Norman, on the early morning of his 18th birthday, will always be remembered, too. This is when he struck and broke the jaw of Amelia Molitor. He was suspended that year, but many thought he shouldve been kicked off the team. The videotape of that incident was made public on Dec. 16, 2016, thus causing national opinions of the incident to escalate even higher. Though its likely he will be drafter, many draft experts doubt he will be selected as a high draft pick.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | West Allis (#310)
[Latest Airdate: July 13, 2017]
[Original Airdate: March 20, 2014]
Everyone knows that State Fair, the Milwaukee Mile, the Pettit Center, and Candy Cane Lane are in West Allis. But have you taken the time recently to experience them? We were delighted. And everyone remembers that Allis Chalmers was here. But have you been back lately to see the redevelopment and renovation? We were amazed. When we poked around Quadgraphics and the West Allis Historical Society, we were enlightened (in different ways), and at Rupenas and Antigua we were blissfully stuffed! And you may have shopped at Record Head or the famous West Allis Farmers Market, but have you given in to your addiction at Onionmania? (Best name ever for a store, by the way!).
We didn't head into West Allis in search of the landmarks, but we found the first three in about 10 minutes! Then we spent five of the fastest, most jam-packed days ever -- and we loved every minute!

American architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, FAIA, FRIBA, is the founding principal of Studio Gang, an architecture and urban design practice with offices in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, Jeanne is internationally renowned for a design process that foregrounds the relationships between individuals, communities, and environments. Her diverse body of work spans scales and typologies, expanding beyond architecture’s conventional boundaries to pursuits ranging from the development of stronger materials to fostering stronger communities. Her approach has resulted in some of today’s most compelling architecture, including Aqua Tower, the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, and Writers Theatre. She is currently designing major projects throughout the Americas and Europe, including the Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York; a unified campus for California College of the Arts in San Francisco; and the new United States Embassy in Brasilia, Brazil.
A recipient of the 2013 National Design Award (Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum), Jeanne was named the 2016 Architect of the Year by the Architectural Review. In 2017, she was honored with the Louis I. Kahn Memorial Award and made an honorary fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Widely published and acclaimed, her work has been exhibited at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Chicago Architecture Biennial, Museum of Modern Art, and Art Institute of Chicago. She is the author of Reveal, the first volume on Studio Gang’s work and process, and Reverse Effect: Renewing Chicago’s Waterways, which envisions a radically greener future for the Chicago River.
Jeanne is a distinguished alumna of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where she was recently appointed Professor in Practice. Her GSD studios have previously explored the multivalent potential of materiality. This semester she is working with students to explore strategies for rebuilding community infrastructure in the Caribbean Islands following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Jeanne lectures frequently throughout the world and serves on various civic and design-focused committees and advisory groups.

Professor Heather Ann Thompson lecture on Blood in the Water, The Attica Uprising of 1971
The Political Theory Project (PTP) presents an evening with Heather Ann Thompson whose work on the Attica uprising earned her a Pulitzer Prize. Thompson is also a public intellectual who writes extensively on the history of policing, mass incarceration and the current criminal justice system.
The PTP’s aim is to foster the study of those institutions which contribute to societies that are free, prosperous, and fair. One way the Project does this is through sponsoring lectures, a series of talks, usually featuring speakers with opposing viewpoints, on a politically charged issue. The Lecture Series is committed to rigorous, but civil discussion of pressing problems of our day.
