HISTORIC MILL CREEK DISCOVERY PARK | MACKINAW CITY, MI | RV LIFE - S1EP32
We visit Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Mill Creek was established in 1790 by Robert Campbell to provide sawn lumber for nearby Mackinac Island. Campbell also operated a farm, with hayfields, cattle, and an extensive orchard. A gristmill was eventually added to the operation. In 1819 the mill and farm were purchased by wealthy Mackinac Island merchant Michael Dousman. He continued operations on the site through the 1830s. Abandoned and eventually forgotten, Mill Creek was rediscovered in 1972. After extensive archaeological work, the site opened in 1984. Today, visitors can watch the reconstructed sawmill in operation and explore the natural history of the site through trails, exhibits and naturalist programs. The site was also featured on the PBS show Under the Radar. Share your RV/Camping pics with us at #thenorthwoodsrvlife

Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park - Working Water Powered Sawmill
I just spent two weeks in the upper part of Michigan (August, 2015). My base camp was a 12' x 14' dry cabin at the Mill Creek Campground, 2 miles S/E of Mackinaw City, Michigan, right on the shores of Lake Huron. From there I spent the two weeks visiting various places around the upper part of Michigan and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Here’s one of my visits that was near the campground. I rented a bicycle from the campground store and rode down the road about a mile on a local rail to trail path to see what the Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park was all about. To my surprise they were doing a live demonstration early timber construction techniques. Another surprise is that it included a working demonstration of a 1780’s water powered sawmill. When I passed the sawmill as I walked up into the demonstration area, I thought it was just a static structure showing what it would have looked like back in the day. It was a very interesting thing to see how it all worked The fellow doing the demonstration (the Millwright) was very good. He did an excellent job explaining everything in an entertaining way.

The bridge was officially begun amid proper ceremonies on May 7 & 8, 1954, at St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. The bridge opened to traffic on November 1, 1957 according to schedule, despite the many hazards of marine construction over the turbulent Straits of Mackinac.

Exploring Mackinaw City & Mackinac Island – Sightseeing Trip in Michigan
I went on a sightseeing trip exploring Mackinaw City & Mackinac Island — located on the tip of lower Michigan.
Hey Everyone,
Last summer in June, I went on a sightseeing trip exploring Mackinaw City & Mackinac Island. It's located on the tip of lower Michigan. I really enjoyed this trip. It was a sunny trip with pleasant cooler temperatures. I explored most of the area attractions — Colonial Michilimackinac, Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park, Fort Mackinac, Bridge View Park, Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, McGulpin Point Lighthouse, etc. Seeing the stars at night at the Headlands Dark Sky Park was amazing — something you don't want to miss! Granted, it's not the darkest place to see the night sky. But for the free price and the fact it's open 24/7, makes it worthwhile. Enjoy the video!

Tour A Historic Saw Mill - Eleanor's First Zipline! - Mackinaw City, MI
Part history, part adventure! The Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park gave our family a wonderful lesson on the workings of a saw mill and the use of the logs in the construction of the Colonial Michilimakinaw fort nearby. After some hard work sawing logs, we hit the adventure park. The kids enjoyed the treetop bridge and Eleanor soared down her first zipline! At the tower overlook, we climbed our way to the top for some spectacular views of Lake Huron, the Mighty Mac Bridge and Mackinaw City. All ages will love this!
