railroad pass trail crossing, boulder city and henderson, nevada
after seeing this recreational trail i thought to research it and it happens to be the incredibly long river mountains loop trail, taking around the river mountains range in a complete circle for 35 miles, if you think im crazy for wanting to do the entire trail on a bicycle well i guess i am because i cant live without riding a bicycle
this trail was built to have 2 trail railroad crossings that were near the edge of the blasted mountain to allow hualing anything from one valley to the next over 100 years ago
i wanted to see the train ride over the new railroad bridge but for some ridiculous reason they put a red rail flag in front of it, the bridge is 1 year old and barely had any traffic
sorry for not posting a video, life in las vegas has been a bit ridiculous, i upgraded my video editor and now im trying to find non copyright fitting music for the 2018 holiday and craft festival when i did my first show with my N scale club...if you are wondering why i don't volunteer at the museum, i signed the papers but i live more than 30 miles away and i cant always go to boulder city...and for how long it takes to work my way up to being an engineer ive been thinking to do other things and save 250$ for when to drive the locomotive for fun which i don't mind....this is the cheapest place in the united states to drive a diesel locomotive
im waiting for the Nevada southern railway museum to finish fixing the new to the collection maersk SDP40F and the SP F40PH and i really need to drive the F40PH ive been waiting my entire life to drive it ever since i was a boy in the Midwest, i love the shape of that locomotive very much
let me know if you want to see my modular freelanced N scale layout...my first layout with scenery and DCC...that video wont be as quick as you think
Hoover Dam & Historic Railroad Trail, Nevada hike
Hiking the Historic Railroad Trail from the Lake Mead trailhead to Hoover Dam, then taking a tour inside the dam. The rail trail hike passes through five tunnels that were dug in the mountain side along Hemenway Wash. The trail is flat & smooth, with nice views of Lake Mead, dam repair yards, transformers, etc. The U.S. Government Construction Railroad operated from 1931-1962. The engine is currently on display at the Nevada Southern Railroad Museum ( ).

Historic Railroad Hiking Trail and Hoover Dam
The Historic Railroad Hiking Trail is located just south of Lake Mead and offers visitors an authentic trek through American history. The trail features 5 impressive tunnels that were constructed to clear a path for trains to deliver supplies to the Hoover Dam. Guests are encouraged to park either at the Hoover Dam (which costs $10) or the Lake Mead Recreational Area (which is free) to start an adventure through the rugged Nevada landscapes. Although the trail itself is rather flat, the mountains to the south can be quite jagged. If you’re feeling adventurous enough, you're welcome to climb the jagged mountains, but most visitors come to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Mead and the historical tunnels. A railroad in the 1930’s once stood on this trail but in the 1960’s it was scrapped for metal parts. It’s easy to imagine trains passing through the tunnels and each one is at least 20-30 feet tall.
I parked at the trailhead located at the Lake Mead Recreation Center for free and started marching my way towards Hoover Dam. The trail by itself is about 3.3 miles but if you choose to walk to the Hoover Dam, it ends up being about 4 miles. The trail doesn’t incline or decline so you won’t have to worry about walking uphill very often. You won’t reach the first trail for about 20 minutes after you start walking but once you do, you’re in for a treat! There are 5 tunnels total and it’s rather interesting to see all the work that went into building them. The tunnels make for perfect places to take a break especially when it’s hot outside. You can expect to see some bats inside the longer tunnels and there are apparently 5 different species of bats that live in the tunnels of this trail! Finally, after the 5th tunnel, there’s still quite a ways to go to get to the Hoover Dam. In the video, you’ll notice that you’ll reach a sign where the trail splits into two. I took the slightly longer route in order to see some of the “Boneyard Exhibit”. This is basically a little scrap yard where mechanical pieces are stored that the dam used to create hydroelectricity.
Finally, I reached the Hoover Dam but first I had to make a quick stop at the Hoover Dam Cafe to fill up your water bottle. I highly suggest doing this because you will have to walk back the way you came. The Hoover Dam just felt like another attraction in Vegas to me and I didn’t include many photos of it in this photo gallery. However, it was quite interesting to be on such a remote trail and then walking to a tourists’ haven such as the Hoover Dam. I felt like a survivor from who had just walked into society after living on a deserted island! You will be sweaty and red once you finally make the 4-mile hike. The shade is very scarce after the 5th tunnel. So take advantage of the air conditioned Hoover Dam Cafe as long as you need to before heading back. Just keep in mind that the trail does close at night time and it’s good to plan 3 hours to get back just to be safe. It’s easy to get caught up in all the tours and taking photos of the Hoover Dam but get back in time or you might be taking a taxi back to the trailhead!
Finally, on my way back, I’m happy to announce that I got my first footage of a big horned sheep. It’s one of Nevada’s state Animals and I was quite shocked I had come into contact with him. I’ve hiked through many places including the Valley of Fire and Petroglyph Canyon and didn’t see on big horned sheep. They’re apparently more common on the Boulder City side than around Las Vegas. They used to be quite plentiful until they suffered from a plague of pneumonia a few years ago. I was debating on whether or not I should get closer to take a photo of it but I didn’t want to get stampeded. They are known to be quite aggressive and can run at speeds of 30 miles an hour! Overall there wasn’t a ton of wildlife besides the big horned sheep and the bats. I would suggest coming here mainly to see how mankind can shape jagged mountains and landscapes when they have their mind set to it. It also gives you an idea of the massive effort that went into place to construct the Hoover Dam. For more photos of the Hoover Dam,

The trail is 3.7 each way from the upper Lake Mead parking lot (Before the pay booth) to the Hoover Dam parking lot (Where the power transformers are). The Arizona state line and Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is another mile or so, but well worth it!

The Historic Railroad Trail is easily accessed either near the Alan Bible Visitor Center or via the Hoover Dam parking garage. It is an easy hike and has great panoramic views of Lake Mead, Boulder Basin, and Fortification Hill.
The Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail is now Designated as a National Historic Trail
On June 4, 2015, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis have designated the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail at Lake Mead National Recreation Area and the Hoover Dam as a national recreation trail.
“We are honored that the Historic Railroad Trail received such an esteemed designation,” said Patrick Gubbins, Lake Mead NRA acting superintendent. “The beautiful lake views along this trail combined with Hoover Dam history make it one of Southern Nevada’s most unique trail experiences.”

The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge
The Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge is an arch bridge in the United States that spans the Colorado River between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The bridge is located within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, and carries U.S. Route 93 over the Colorado River. Opened in 2010, it was the key component of the Hoover Dam Bypass project, which rerouted US 93 from its previous routing along the top of Hoover Dam and removed several hairpin turns and blind curves from the route. It is jointly named for Mike O'Callaghan, Governor of Nevada from 1971–1979, and Pat Tillman, an American football player who left his career with the Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the United States Army and was later killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.

Railroad Tunnels Trail Hoover Dam Night Hike Las Vegas Lake Mead
Summary: Railroad tunnel trail is a small portion of the 30 mile long River Mtns trail system. A haven for mountain bikers is Bootleg Canyon, west of this tunnel trail -- a dream come true within a protected big horn sheep area, with views of the lake, valleys & peaks. This tunnel trail follows the elevated RR bed used to haul supplies used in construction of Hoover Dam 1931 - 1935. The tracks continued in use until 1961, dismantled in 1962, and added to Natl Register of Historic Places in 1984. Since converted to bicycle/hiking trail (no horses on this portion), it is a easy, level, wide gravel walk for tourists and beginners; hiking under 5 tunnels, which are each 300' long and 25' in diameter. The 5th tunnel was opened in 2001, and this trail will eventually go all the way to Hoover Dam. End of trail is located directly under the Lakeview Point scenic overlook (reached by Hwy 93, W of dam), just before the security checkpoint and maintenance yard. Dry & Hot ! FOLLOW MOUNTAIN DO

1931: Lewis Construction Company began construction under Bureau of Reclamation
1961: Last year railroad in use
1962: Tracks dismantled and sold for scrap to Lucia Brothers
1984: Nominated to National Register of Historic Places
Length: 2.6 mi. from gate to the entrance of tunnel 5
One of two most difficult sections of track to construct, only remaining section of Hoover Dam Railroad system that is not highly disturbed or under water.
All tunnels are approximately 300 ft. in length, and 25 ft in diameter. The tunnels were oversized to fit penstock sections and large equipment being transported to Hoover Dam.
Nine steam and four gas locomotives and 71 people were used to operate the system. If was a standard-gauge, 90-pound rail construction that used Oregon fir ties.
This section was used in the motion picture The Gauntlet starring Clint Eastwood and Sondra Locke for a sequence in which they were on a motorcycle being chased by an assassin in a helicopter.
Look for desert bighorn sheep, ravens' and owls' nests, lizards, and antelope ground squirrels. You may also see rattlesnakes and scorpions during the summer.
Along the trail you will see a section of rough, rocky road on the south side of the railroad bed that is believed to be the first section of pioneer trail or road for the construction of Hoover Dam. Approaching tunnel 1, on the right, look down the ravine to see concrete plugs taken out of Hoover Dam to install the turbines.
Tunnel 1 has eight sections of vertical supports, five of which have horizontal planks to prevent the fall of loose rock on to the tracks so there would be few delays during the 24-hour dam building schedule. Weight from the rock has damaged the outermost, eastern arch.
Tunnel 2 burned in an arson fire in 1990. You can see it looks different from the other tunnels. It was sprayed with shotcrete to fortify the now looser rock.
Between tunnels 2 and 3, another pioneer road is visible. Rocks excavated from the tunnels were undoubtedly used for the fills you are walking on now.
The outermost east arch was deformed by pressure of the rock in tunnel 3.
Tunnel 5 was burned in 1978 and was then sealed. The tunnel was restored and reopened in July, 2001. The trail now ends on the other side of tunnel 5. The Historic Railroad Trail will continue to Hoover Dam in the future.
All tunnels are 25 feet in diameter. They were oversized to fit huge penstock sections and large equipment being transported to Hoover Dam.
Nine steam and four gas locomotives and 71 people were used to operate the system. It was a standard-gauge, 90-pound rail construction that used Oregon fir ties.

Cycling In Las Vegas, NV (Summerlin) July 4, 2016
Part of my normal ride back home from the Red Rock area. Starts at Far Hills & Desert Foothills, Far Hills going east to 215 trail, then north to Lake Mead. Then down Lake Mead to Desert Shores. Maximum speed was about 33 MPH, with a descent of over 1,000 feet. The bike I was riding is a Wilier GTR Team.

In the 1930's engineers designed the Hoover Dam near Las Vegas, taming the Colorado river and giving a reliable water supply for California, Nevada, and Arizona.
Running The River Mountains Loop Trail - 34.1 Miles Anti-Clockwise (Las Vegas, NV)
After living in Las Vegas for over 5 years, I finally decided to run The River Mountains Loop Trail! It runs between Boulder City and Henderson and covers a smidgen over 34 miles total. If you run it Anti-Clockwise, you have a good hill battle on your hands, as the elevation creeps for most of the journey, which is lost very quickly as you run back towards Lake Mead.
I parked just within the Lake Mead entrance, near the Hoover Dam Lodge, the first car park on the right, but before the paying entrance lol. I figured, that way, I would get through the the barren section with no cell service while still feeling relatively fresh as I was running alone!
WARNING:
- Due to the heat and lack of water on route, I would recommend running this between November and February in the daytime, or, during the night. A large camelbak is not enough.
- There is no cell phone reception for some of this route.
- The worst part is mile markers 14 to 20. No cell reception, no foot traffic (only the rare cyclist) and of course, no shade.
- There is no shade on this route at all. Very exposed!
- There is a water fountain at Bootleg Canyon (It adds 0.5 miles, as you can see from my video lol). (~Mile marker 30.5)
- There are facilities at Railroad pass (~Mile marker 0.0)
- The water fountain by Equestrian Park DOES NOT WORK! (~Mile marker 3.0)
- There is a small little fenced in area with a water fountain called SNWA Rest Area (~Mile marker 4.0)
- For your first time, I recommend doing this route clockwise!

Arizona Hot Springs Hike, Lake Mead National Park
The Arizona Hot Springs comprises of 4 pools of water ranging from 100 degrees Fahrenheit to 111 degrees at the source. The source provides mineralized water to the pools at an astonishing 30 gallons per minute. If you venture down the ladder, near the last pool, you will have a 1,000-foot walk to the Colorado River. I have done this several times and it is such an amazing sight to see the river at the end of the trail.
The hike is 6 miles round trip and there are two routes that you can take. I have only done the Hot Spring Canyon Trail. I hear that the White Rock Canyon Trail is just as beautiful. I may try that route in a few weeks and update you with a video on Instagram.
I will be creating a hot spring guide soon. It will include everything you need to know about hot spring etiquette, hot to get to certain hot springs and what you need before you go. You can get the complete guide and other guides by subscribing as a Patreon. (Only $1).
There will be a small printable available to those who subscribe to my email list on my website.
