Fayette was once one of the Upper Peninsula's most productive iron-smelting operations. Located on the Garden Peninsula at Snail Shell Harbor. When the charcoal iron market began to decline, the Jackson Iron Company closed its Fayette smelting operation in 1891. It is now a completly restored village including 22 historic buildings, museum exhibits and the visitor center, which can be toured May through October. The historic site is located in Fayette State Park.

Fayette Historic State Park Delta County Michigan 4k
Fayette Historic State Park is located in Big Bay de Noc in Delta County, Michigan. This wonderful park is found in the Garden Peninsula just southwest of Manistique, MI. It's my understanding there has been a recent restoration project to the park as others commented how nice and clean the park and buildings looked. It was one of the Upper Peninsula's most productive iron-smelting operations during it's 24 years of operation. Eventually it was converted to a fishing village and resort in the early 1900's. After exchanging a few hands due to non payment of taxes, the property fell into the hands of the State. It was then turned into a State park in 1959.

Fayette Historic State Park 1/2 - Garden, MI
Part 1. This is a very scenic state park in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It offers all the features of a public park (beach, trails, camping) but also has some restored and recreated buildings from when this was one of the largest blast furnaces in Michigan. The smelting operation closed in 1891 after 24 years of producing iron ore. The site offers a chance to reflect on life in the late 1800s as well as the de-industrialization of America (and realize that it didn't just start in the 1980s with Detroit or Cleveland).

Camping at Fayette State Park, Michigan
Adjacent to Historic Fayette is a small state park campground to service those that visit the town and want to spend the evening there.
It is a semi-modern campground, meaning it has electricity and nothing much else.
Water is available in common use areas, but there are no flush toilets or shower facilities. This is not really a problem for a full-featured RV, but may be for tent camping.
Still, it is OK as a stop-over when visiting the Historic Fayette town.

Mystery Artifact at the Michigan Historical Museum
What is it? The curators at the Michigan Historical Museum are stumped by this mysterious artifact in their collection.
Jeremy Dimick describes this unknown item that was donated early in the museum's history, before record keeping is what it today (circa 1913). The artifact came from a mining ghosttown in Michigan's Upper Penninsula that is now Fayette Historical Townsite (michigan.gov/fayettetownsite). The artifact is now part of a small collection of unknown items in storage at the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing.
The item is intricately made of wood, with a handle on one end. Small circles of wood are attached by nails to the top and formerly to the bottom. The item is about 6 inches tall and about as wide as it is tall. It is perhaps a foot in length and has a slight point on the end opposite of the handle.
Leave a comment below if you have any idea what this item could be.
