Hoi An, Vietnam | The World in 4K | Travel + Leisure
In the middle of Hoi An is an area called Ancient Town, and the sobriquet fits. Commanding a prime location on Vietnam’s central coast, where the Thu Bon River empties into the South China Sea, this city was a maritime heavyweight for much of its history. The region was settled more than 2,000 years ago, and it served as a strategic port until the mid 1800s for Chinese, Japanese, Indian, French, Dutch, and Portuguese seafarers and traders plying the spice route.
In 1999, Ancient Town, inland from the ocean, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, which protected its pagodas, wooden bridges, and merchant houses, many built between the 15th and 19th centuries. Ever since, tourists have crowded this historic center, essentially a romantic (if somewhat kitschy) living museum. But now a newly revamped beach resort is bringing attention back to Hoi An’s oceanfront — and a lively renaissance is under way, with entrepreneurs from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and beyond intent on steering Hoi An into the present.
Even with all the new activity, Ancient Town’s dreamy golden façades still evoke a bygone age. People start the morning by lighting argan wood incense, the musky scent perfuming the sepia-tinged lanes all day. Farmers peddle herbs, fishermen fillet catfish and eels, and hawkers advertise noodles and dumplings. Come nightfall, floating candle offerings flicker on the river. This colorful port city has matured gracefully — but a new golden era is just beginning.

Visit Hoi An, Vietnam Travel Guide and Top Attractions
Although we had spent over a week in Hoi An, there were a number of attractions, buildings, temples and other historic sites we had yet to visit. Thus, on one of our last days in Hoi An, we (Samuel and Audrey) decided to explore the center of the ancient town on our bicycles. We purchased tickets from the local tourist office, which for $6 allowed us access into 5 of the old town's historic buildings. Apparently, you can sometimes get away visiting some of the attractions on the ticket list without paying for the actual ticket; however, we noticed guards checking tickets at several of the places we ended up visiting.

Although randomly wandering around Hoi An and visiting many of its local markets - Central and New Market especially - were some of our favorite experiences, we definitely recommend getting a pass to visit some of the main attractions in the Ancient city area.
The following are a list of the top attractions and things to do while spending time in Hoi An, Vietnam:
A few of the places we chose to visit on this outing included:
[1] The Japanese Covered Bridge - a structure which has a pagoda attached to it, and is guarded by the statue of a dog on one side and the statue of a monkey on the other,
[2] the pedestrian bridge which is covered in colourful lanterns that light up at night,
[3] the local square, where games and performances take place in the evenings,
[4] Quang Trieu Cantonese Assembly Hall, which acts as a gathering place for the Cantonese community and is also home to some beautiful architecture,
[5] the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation, which contains a temple dedicated to Thien Hau, the goddess of the sea.
We were able to cram all of these sites into a rather condenced period of time by hopping on our bicycles and high tailing it the entire time. If we had to do it over again, we'd definitely take it slower and visit the attractions at much more leisurely pace.
One of the potential traps of lingering somewhere for a period of time is that you become complacent and start making excuses for not visiting places. You can always do it tomorrow; however, when time creeps up on you it may eventually be too late.
Hoi An, which was once known as Faifo, is a city of Vietnam located on the coast of the South China Sea. The town is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and as such it draws many visitors:
