David Photographing in Hoi An, Vietnam 2015
Short video clip of David Lazar working with Rehahn in Vietnam.
From David Lazar - Here is a short behind-the-scenes video showing me photographing a beautiful old couple in Vietnam. This video and photo was taken on a LuminousJourneys.net research trip for our Vietnam photo tours in January and June. The tour in June has availabilities and you can read more about it here:
When photographing people, I always consider the light, background and their positioning/posture. I asked this couple to squat down and slightly face each other in front of their crops, so I could fill the background with a consistent green colour that is also representative of their farming lives. To complete the vision of this photo I had in my mind, I gave them some direction which helped to convey more strongly their emotions in a single frame. Thanks to Réhahn Photography for his help and Vietnamese skills!

Most Beautiful City in Vietnam | Exploring Hoi An - The City of Lanterns
Learn more about travelling with us on our Flying the Nest Expeditions here:
Our final expeditions episode is here :( we have arrived in our last spot - Hoi An. Here we spent a few days exploring one of the most beautiful cities here in Vietnam - also known as the city of Lanterns.
After doing the Hai Van Pass from Hue down to Hoi Ann (absolutely stunning by the way) we checked into our hotel and headed out to explore the city.
First stop was picking up group hats, before going out onto the river to celebrate the lantern festival that takes place every full moon.
The next day we were on the hunt for some local dishes - we tried the famous Banh Mi and coconut coffee.
Check out our Vietnam Street food video:
On our second last day we held a workshop day with everyone on the expeditions, teaching them everything we know about running a successful YouTube channel, travelling full time and how we started doing this.
On our final day we headed out onto the rice fields by bikes before stopping off at a local farm to learn how the majority of the population of Vietnam works and lives, before learning how to cook our own Vietnam pancakes.
We just wanted to say thank you to everyone for making this trip unforgettable :)

How I Got Stuck in Vietnam
On the 28 September 2019 I was due to fly back from Da Nang to Paris via Hanoi. But what happened at Da Nang set up a series of events that has quite literally changed my life.
The back story to this is that I had flown into Vietnam with my Macbook Pro laptop. A laptop that, at the time and unbeknown to me, was the subject of a recall.
With security bearing down on me at Da Nang I had absolutely no choice but to stay in Vietnam and get the battery replaced on my laptop.
Official guidelines from the aviation authority are actually very contradictory. On the one hand they say it's prohibited and on the other they say just turn it off. The latter is what I had been told at first but then they put the blockers up and steadfastly said no!
Having already spent a little time in Hoi An I decided that for my sanity it would probably be better for me to spend my time there rather than in Da Nang.
Hoi An is a small city in central Vietnam. A city that has stolen my heart and where I made many friends. Some of those friends are shown here but I couldn't include everyone.
To the people of Hoi An. Thank you. Thank you for welcoming me to your city and for stopping me from going absolutely crazy!!!
I keep being asked when I am coming back. The answer is as soon as I can. Hopefully a lot sooner than you might expect.

Hoi An: The Art of Anh.
This video was shot in the historic, trading town of Hoian, Vietnam in 1998. The art work at the end is now in my living room. It is a picture of the artist Anh's grandfather and best friend. At the time, they could be often seen together on a regular basis as his cyclo (pedi cab) pedaled about the town. I wonder if he is still alive?
