Hole-in-the-Ground, Oregon
Hole-in-the-Ground is a large maar (explosion crater) in the Fort Rock Basin of Lake County, central Oregon, northeast of Crater Lake, near Oregon Route 31.
It is about 1,600 meters (1.0 mi) across, a little longer N-S than E-W. Its floor is about 150 meters (490 ft) below the surrounding ground level and has a rim that rises 35 to 65 meters (110 to 210 ft) above, the highest point on the east side. The crater formed during the late Pleistocene, between 13,500 and 18,000 years ago, at which time the Fort Rock Basin was a lake and the location was near the shore. Basaltic magma intruding near the surface flashed ground water to steam, which blew out overlying rock and soil, along with some juvenile material. As material slid into the hole formed, it closed the vent and the process repeated, eventually forming the huge hole. Blocks as large as 8 meters (26 ft) in size were flung as far as 3.7 kilometers (2.3 mi) from the crater.

8. The Hidden Pyramid of Chichen Itza

Deepest Hole in The Ocean! (Whirlpool) Saltstraumen
The Saltstraumen has the strongest tidal current in the world. Up to 400,000,000 cubic metres (520,000,000 cu yd) of seawater forces its way through a 3-kilometre (1.9 mi) long and 150-metre (490 ft) wide strait every six hours, with water speeds reaching 22 knots (41 km/h; 25 mph). Vortices known as whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 metres (33 ft) in diameter and 5 metres (16 ft) in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. The Saltstraumen has existed for about two to three thousand years. Before that, the area was different due to post-glacial rebound. The current is created when the tide tries to fill the Skjerstadfjorden. The height difference between the sea level and the fjord inside can be up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in). When the current turns, there is a period when the strait is navigable.

13 BIGGEST Treasures Ever Discovered
From gold coins to sunken treasure to ancient tombs, these are the 13 biggest treasures ever discovered.
Back in 2014, a middle aged couple in Northern California accidentally stumbled across 1400 gold coins while walking their dog. The old coins were likely stolen from a coin minting factory back in the Gold Rush era of California and hidden underground for a couple hundred years. The individual coins were auctioned off and ended up raising 11 million dollars. The couple has chosen to stay anonymous and refused to disclose where they found the gold to prevent a false gold rush in their area. Most of their 11 million dollar profit was donated to charity.
The British are constantly sweeping their own land with metal detectors, in hopes of finding ancient treasures and trinkets lost to history. In 2001 one such hobby treasure hunter, a retired electrician, was sweeping a grassy field with his metal detector, hoping to find something valuable in the dirt. He unwittingly uncovered a bona fide treasure - a 3.5 oz cup carved from 20 karat gold. The 3500 year old cup was made around the same time Stonehenge was built and was valued at £270,00 british pounds or roughly $390,000 USD.
The Silverdale Hoard is the name given to one of the largest caches of Viking Silver ever found. This massive find was uncovered in North Yorkshire a few years ago in 2011 and is comprised of 1000 year old silver heirlooms, including 90 silver viking coins with the name of an unknown Viking king minted onto it. This mysterious hoard is still being analyzed to this day with hopes of uncovering more details of Viking history and culture. The continued study of the treasure makes the monetary value unclear, but the Silverdale Hoard is estimated to be worth at least 100,00 British pounds or about 145,000 US dollars.
A sunken ship full of nearly 600,000 gold and silver coins was found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean by a private treasure hunting company called Odyssey Marine. A priceless hoard of gold coins and hand crafted gold chains were found inside of the ship, which was called the Frigate Mercedes, and became the center of a controversy when Spain claimed ownership over the gold. A legal battle between Spain and Odyssey Marine ensued and lasted half a decade before the Spanish government prevailed. In 2015, Spain finally flew their 17 tons of priceless coins across the Atlantic.
This massive load of treasure was found in 2009 when a farmer in Central England lost a tool in his field and called a friend with a metal detector to scan for it. In search of a farm tool, Terry accidentally uncovered the largest single hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found. As excavators dug up the field they found a total of 3500 pieces of gold, silver, and garnet that would total to 3.285 million british pounds or 4.75 million US dollars, split in half by the man who owned the land and the man who found it.
Amateur divers were exploring an old sunken dock off of the coast of Israel when they discovered 2,000 gold coins hidden in the sea bed. The centuries old currency was miraculously unmarred by age or water damage at the bottom of the ocean. There is no current estimated monetary value of the 20 pounds worth of coins, but they are considered extremely rare and valuable to historians. Even at the time of their minting in 900 AD they were considered a royal sum of cash.
One of the most exciting and largest treasures on this list has come close to being discovered but hasn’t actually been found yet. In 2010 the successful art dealer, hobby treasure hunter, and eccentric millionaire Forrest Fenn had the idea of hiding a huge fortune in a treasure chest and burying it somewhere for someone else to find. Fenn hopes to share the fun and thrill of treasure hunting which he has enjoyed throughout his life with others. If you were to discover Fenn’s Treasure with the set of 9 clues he has put out, you would be looking at a sweet 1 to 3 million US dollar cash out of gold nuggets and precious stones.

We have no explanation for the lack of objects at the bottom... we have dropped countless rocks, bullets, fireworks, and other stuff down there. Where did it go? Also, seems to me there were some strange albeit faint sounds down there...
Our rig consisted of: a mini keychain spy camera, an LED flashlight, Styrofoam (for both padding and floatation, in case we hit water), a pencil (to protect the lens from rock strikes), fishing line, and a power drill (to reel the line back in).
Kristie Wolfe builds underground home & sets rural WA hamlet
Inspired by the success of the Hawaii treehouse she built for $11,000, Kristie Wolfe began searching for land to build a “Hobbit”-inspired village. Knowing that there is land to be found for cheap in this country (she bought her Hawaii property for $8000), she began to search the Northwest for sites.
“There’s a lot of land everywhere, if you look on craigslist, if you look on zillow, you can find property so it’s not really that there’s not a lot. The issue is with property that’s in my price range- I’m looking for property that’s $10,000 to 20,000- usually there’s a reason why it’s cheap, it’s either an easement problem or you have to drive through a crappy neighborhood… but if you’re wanting to be off-grid, it opens up a whole world of selections, there’s a ton out there.”
Wolfe paid $18,000 for 5 acres on a hillside above Lake Chelan, Washington. Being a couple miles down a dirt road, there was no option to be on the grid so Wolfe put in a solar panel, septic and a water tank (filled by truck for now) and began to dig the first of her underground homes.
At 288 square feet, Wolfe’s “tiny house in the shire” was over the maximum square footage allowed for an un-permitted build so she went to the county for approval. With only hand-sketched plans on graph paper, she was able to get a permit.
The structure went up in a few days “with a lot of help from family and friends” and it was “wrapped and roofed” in a few weeks and then Wolfe finished the interior on her own.
Inspired by the “Hobbit” books, films and cartoon (from 1977), Wolfe wanted to recreate the cozy feel of a hobbit hole. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole and that meant comfort.
Rather than buying expensive custom details, Wolfe got creative. She used the top of an old cable spool - scavenged for free long before the build- as a round door. To create round windows, she hid secondhand ($10) square windows behind repurposed circular mirror frames. For a very unique cordwood floor, she cut scraps of wood (found beside the road and old firewood) into into one-inch-thick pieces glued down with a heavy construction adhesive and grouted by hand (again thanks much help to friends and family).
Wolfe has broken ground on the 2nd and 3rd hillside homes. She doesn't plan to change much of her design except to make the windows larger. The completed “village” will include an above-ground communal kitchen built to look like a thatched-roof English-style pub.
