Out of Respect We Didn't... Holocaust Memorial Museum & Arlington Cemetery ???? Full Time RV Living
Out of Respect We Didn't... Holocaust Memorial Museum & Arlington Cemetery ???? Full Time RV Living. This day exploring Washington DC was a heavier. We visited the Holocaust Memorial Museum and Arlington Cemetery. These places were high on our list of places to see. But these aren't the best places to whip out a camera and vlog. Out of respect we kept vlogging to a minimum outside of these locations. These are moving places and deserve to be respected. The Holocaust Memorial Museum is a must see while visiting DC. Be prepared with tissues for the heart wrenching stories and imagery. We don't recommend taking young children through this museum but instead recommend sticking to the exhibits around the permanent museum. As for Arlington this is a must see but don't go here playing tourist. Instead go with the mindset of paying respect to those who have fallen. While we were here we witnessed the changing of the guard which is a very powerful ceremony.
After a long day we took the metro back home to Cherry Hill RV Park from Arlington Cemetery. At first we thought we would need to Uber back but thankfully the subway was right at the entrance to Arlington.

OUR STORY
We are Josh and Kali from Seattle, Washington. In 2015 we decided to change our lives. We sold everything we owned bought a RV and a truck starting living in our RV full time in 30 days! Full time rv living was a major change for us. We hadn't made any plans to change to this rv life until one day it hit us we couldn't have the American Dream and travel to. Choosing to travel meant downsizing our life and becoming minimalists. It was the BEST decision we have ever made. Now we plan to travel non-stop in our 33ft. fifth wheel full time. Join the adventure as we RV across the United States (US)

Holocaust Survivors in New Orleans
New Orleans was a port of embarkation for Holocaust Survivors who left displaced persons camps in Europe to start a new life in the US. 36 boats carrying 6,000 Jewish Survivors landed in New Orleans. The Jewish Federation helped 219 individuals who initially settled in New Orleans. Anne Levy was one of them. She tells her story and the story of the community of Holocaust Survivors who made New Orleans their home. The Survivors organized and stood up the American Nazi Party. This video was created by John Menszer.
MCN2016 - Human-Centered Community Engagement in a Digital World
Crowdsourcing and citizen history projects are becoming increasingly popular. A growing number of museums and cultural organizations aim to engage communities at the regional or national level through such ventures. While large-scale involvement is often an attractive goal, significant questions remain: can museums undertake extensive community engagement without sacrificing the benefits of meaningful, human-centered connections? Are such efforts worth it? And if so, what are the digital and non-digital strategies needed to scale-up this work? The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has been exploring answers to these questions through its first full-fledged citizen history project, History Unfolded: US Newspapers and the Holocaust. Students and lifelong learners across the country research local newspaper collections and submit relevant articles to the project’s website. The goals are to reach 20% of high school students and 20% of libraries across the country in a meaningful way. Since the project’s launch in November, more than 1000 citizen historians have joined, submitting over 2,000 articles. Secondary and college students in schools nationwide have contributed hundreds of stories, including from Jewish, African-American, and foreign language newspapers. Dedicated lifelong learners have extensively researched online and print collections, helping to inform the Museum as it prepares a new exhibition opening in spring 2018. In this case study, participants will learn how the hiring of a full-time community manager has played a critical role in the project’s success. The Museum’s team will discuss how to conduct large-scale community outreach through tailored emails, blogs incorporating multimedia, and public video chats. Project leaders will examine what motivates community members to join and stay involved by sharing feedback from the community itself. The challenges and limitations of keeping the work human-centered will be addressed, as well as practical ways other institutions can plan to undertake large-scale participatory projects in the future.

MCN2016 - True Stories
Good stories grab us. They take us in, transport us, and allow us to live vicariously and visually through another’s experience. Increasingly museums will be seen as content businesses and as much as we are working with, and affected by, digital media and technology, we are producing experiences. The best experiences rely on good stories. We retain stories far longer than data, and have evolved to listen and learn from them. Storytelling also greatly helps anyone speaking or presenting in front of an audience, so we'll be putting that theory to the test. In this round-table discussion, we will be inviting participants who work outside of the museum field to talk about how they use stories to communicate ideas. We will also hear from museum professionals using stories to effectively bring alive exhibition ideas. The discussion will include representatives from the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and the newly opened Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture as well as a NPR reporter, and a singer/songwriter. Each participant will bring a story and explain the path that was followed in its development and deployment. Through a facilitated discussion we will unpack how we can learn from different approaches to engaging audiences and how we might blur the lines between what is entertainment, education, history and news.

Holocaust Museum Houston - Never Forget May 2015
Holocaust Museum Houston - Never Forget May 2015
Read More:
Charged with educating students and the public about the dangers of prejudice and hatred in society, Holocaust Museum Houston opened its doors in March of 1996. Since that time, impassioned notes, poems, artwork and other gifts, from school children and adults alike, attest to the life-changing thoughts generated by just one visit to this unique facility.
Permanent Exhibition:
The Permanent Exhibition at the Museum is called “Bearing Witness: A Community Remembers,” and it focuses on the stories of Holocaust survivors living in the Houston metropolitan area. A tour begins with a look at life before the Holocaust. Visitors then see the beginnings of Nazism and Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. The displays progress through the disruption of normal life, to segregation, to imprisonment in concentration camps and finally to extermination. The roles of collaborators, by-standers, rescuers and liberators are portrayed through artifacts, film reels, photographs, and text panels. The main exhibit ends with the moving short films “Voices” and “Voices II,” which alternate daily in the 100-seat theater. Voices is shown Wednesday through Saturday, with Voices II on Sunday through Tuesday. These films are compilations of verbal testimony from area survivors.
World War II Holocaust Railcar:
The Museum is proud to display a 1942 World War II railcar of the type used to carry millions of Jews to their deaths. The railcar was formally dedicated and opened to the public during 10th Anniversary ceremonies on Sunday, March 5, 2006.
Danish Rescue Boat:
The Museum's Permanent Exhibition also includes a 1942 Danish rescue boat of the type used to save more than 7,200 Jews from almost certain execution at the hands of Nazi Germany.
Morgan Family Center:
The Morgan Family Center comprises the administrative offices, two changing exhibits galleries, the HMH classrooms and the theater.
Two Galleries:
The Museum also includes two changing galleries for art and photography exhibits. The Central Gallery is naturally located in the center of the Museum building and leads guests to the library. The Josef and Edith Mincberg Gallery is a larger hall for more extensive displays. The changing exhibits are designed to complement and further explore the issues presented in the Permanent Exhibition.
Education Center:
Holocaust Museum Houston is also widely known as an education center and the facility includes two classroom areas and a research library. The Boniuk Library and Resource Center contains more than 4,000 titles relating to the Holocaust, World War II, religion and antisemitism. The video section contains more than 300 titles on related subjects and the tapes can be viewed in the Museum’s video room or checked out. A full-time librarian manages the center, and a full-time registrar is responsible for maintaining the Museum’s archives. Thousands of historic and original photographs, documents, letters, diaries and other artifacts from the 1930s and 1940s are cataloged in the archives. Researchers can examine these documents and artifacts by appointment.
Lack Family Memorial Room:
Two other areas of Holocaust Museum Houston allow for reflection and meditation. The Lack Family Memorial Room is a quiet place for contemplation. It contains the three-part work of art comprising the Wall of Remembrance, the Wall of Tears and the Wall of Hope. The Memorial Wall in the room is a place where local Holocaust survivors can commemorate their lost loved ones.
Eric Alexander Garden of Hope:
Outside the Memorial Room is a quiet garden known as the Eric Alexander Garden of Hope. It is dedicated to the eternal spirit of children and is in memory of the 1.5 million children who lost their lives in the Holocaust.
Houston Museum District:
Holocaust Museum Houston is a member of the Houston Museum District Association.

TRUCK WON'T START...& Canada ????Full Time RV Living Our morning in Presque Isle, Maine started with our 2013 Ram 3500 dually not starting. Which was not a fun way to start the day since we were planning to explore some of Canada and see Grand Falls, NB.
Thankfully Josh got the truck working and we were able to get out on the adventure! We had a ton of fun in Canada and ended the day with a beautiful meal overlooking a lake.
Josh grew up in Presque Isle, Maine so this was a very special trip for him to show me his home town. It was lovely and so grateful we were able to add this stop to our trip.

MCN2016 - Digital Careers at a Crossroads
Human resources are at the heart of the “human-centered museum.” The responsive, impactful, community-focused museums of the future will need staff that are agile, collaborative and digitally fluent and management that encourages a digital mindset. This forum including presenters Elissa Frankle, US Holocaust Memorial Museum; Max Evjen, MSU Museum; and Chad Weinard, Independent Museum Strategist will describe the current state of digital professions in the museum sector, explore what will be required in the future, and develop practical ways to get from here to there. Where we are: In the first section we’ll discuss the current situation, including challenges and opportunities. Digital roles in museums are ill-defined and non-standardized; digital staff don’t fit well within traditional org charts; advancement paths are nebulous; skills are broad but not deep. Where we need to be: Next we’ll introduce what we see for the future and discuss as a group. Museums will need digital skills throughout the organization. They’ll need staff that are creative, collaborate across departments, and interact fluidly with visitors/audiences/people in the community. Managers will know how to leverage technology strategically and be tasked with developing staff skills. What we can do now: Finally we’ll open the conversation to compile practical takeaways--next steps for digital practitioners to build careers in the museums of the future. The learning outcomes expected from this professional forum are: The roles of digital professionals in museums are bridge builders. Management in museums can make a positive difference in the operations of museums by articulating the need for digital professionals to the museum staff. Digital should be a part of job descriptions and hiring practices. Supporting these digital positions requires organizational change. Every position in a museum has some degree of power to influence change in the organization.

MCN2016 - Beyond Crowd-Sourcing: Sharing Responsibility and Empowering Participants
Citizen history and crowdsourcing are buzzwords entrancing museum professionals. In building collections of primary source materials, museums are increasingly seeking to engage the public in museum work. Great for museums--but are these fulfilling the needs of our participants? In this presentation, we argue that a successful participatory project must consider more than outsourcing grunt work. Panelists from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and Ford's Theatre share lessons learned from inviting the public in. We will discuss the differences between crowdsourcing and citizen history, challenges facing each, and strategies that will help other institutions effectively plan their own participatory projects. The two projects, based on their objectives and target audiences, took different approaches, reflected in user interfaces. Ford’s Theatre’s Remembering Lincoln, showcasing how people around the United States and world responded to the Lincoln assassination, emphasized the finished product--high-quality images of primary sources with high-quality metadata that localizes and personalizes a national story. The project’s manager will discuss preliminary forays into both crowdsourcing and citizen history since launch, emphasizing that unless institutions set participation as an explicit goal of the project, relying on crowdsourcing can be mutually exclusive from the creation of a polished end-user experience. On the other hand, USHMM’s History Unfolded project, in which citizen historians across the country research local newspaper coverage of the Holocaust, has emphasized creating an infrastructure for participation and a high quality educational experience as important as the finished product itself. The project’s education outreach specialist will discuss the challenges the Museum has faced in balancing educational and research goals, as well as a number of strategies the project’s team has learned in creating a successful citizen history project. Together, these two projects provide lessons learned for institutions that are seeking to build collections of primary sources with user participation.
