God's Acre - Salem Moravian Graveyard, NC
God's Acre, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina has become the traditional name given to the graveyards of Congregations of the Moravian Church. In between God's Acre is the Salem Cemetery so you can visit two historic cemeteries in the same area.
Moravians believe strongly in equality, even in death; therefore, every stone in a God's Acre is a recumbent stone with the same proportions and made of the same material so that no one person stands out among the stones. The Communion of Saints is continued even on the graveyard as it reflects the continuity of the congregation. In addition, the deceased are buried by choir; to the Moravians, these were the living groups into which the Congregation was originally divided to meet the needs of the members according to their age and station in life. Originally men and women sat in their choir groups in church at worship. The burial by choir in God's Acre also reflects the way the members of the congregation sat as a worshipping community so that visually and symbolically the Congregation continues in the graveyard.

Hugo Distler — Suite from 30 Pieces, Op 18-I — Mvt. I—IV
Distler was born in Nürnberg, in 1908. His early childhood was fraught with bad experiences. Under the guardianship of his maternal grandparents, he attended a Gymnasium and a music academy. When he was later unable to complete his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory, his teachers provided him with excellent recommendations, and Distler became the new organist at St. Jakobi in Lübeck in 1931. In this new environment, he became famous as a church musician, organist, conductor, and composer—the par excellence of German music. His other positions were in academia in Stuttgart and Berlin, and he eventually became a full professor. Due to the repression by the Nazi party, constantly being overworked, and the impact of his early childhood upon his psyche, Distler committed suicide on All Saints Day, November 1, 1942.

Moravian Stars Still Shine Over Old Salem Town in Winston Salem NC
This video is about Moravian Stars Still Shine Above Old Salem Town in Winston-Salem, NC OldSalem.org, WinstonSalem.com,
The Moravian Star started as a geometry project for school boys in Niesky, Germany in the 1850s. A factory in Herrnhut now makes the 26-point stars in paper and plastic for Advent season to Epiphany to decorate sanctuaries, homes and doorways. They usually are illuminated from within to remember Christ as the light of the world and the Morning Star guiding the Magi in their search for the Christ.
Salem was founded in 1766 by the Moravians–a Protestant religious group that first organized in what is now known as the Czech Republic in the 15th century. The Moravians were active missionaries who established an earlier settlement in Bethlehem, PA, before settling “Wachovia” in the North Carolina backcountry in 1753. In the Wachovia Tract of nearly 100,000 acres, Salem was developed as the central administrative, spiritual, craft, and professional town surrounded by five outlying congregations.
The Town of Salem has a rich and deep history, with the restoration supported by many different sources of historical documentation and research. Core material is the primary source information published in the Records of the Moravians in North Carolina based on records held by the Moravian Archives, Southern Province in Winston-Salem. In addition, documentation such as private papers, historic photographs, and artistic renderings, as well as ongoing research of buildings, objects, and archaeological resources, have been critical to understanding the Town’s history.
