Tom takes an outside tour of Meteor Crater RV Park in Winslow, Arizona. Just a few miles away from Meteor Crater and outside of the city limits, the sky and stars put on an amazing show at night, benefits of a minimalist lifestyle. The spaces face the mountains and the place is well-kept, clean and the staff is no less than amazing. We had a great stay and will definitely add them to our list of favorites as we continue our motorhome living.

Homolovi IS IN ARIZONA Arizona, USA, preserving over 300 Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites. Homolovi or Homol'ovi (the Hopi spelling of the word) is a Hopi word meaning place of the little hills. It is located just over a mile north of Winslow, Arizona, and features historical exhibits, interpretive programs, birdwatching, and hiking. There is a year-round campground, restrooms with showers and an RV dump station.
From 1986 to its 2011 reopening, the name of the park was Homolovi Ruins Park. The Hopi tribe lobbied the Arizona parks board to remove Ruins from the name, as the Hopi tribe considers them spiritually alive. During a meeting in Winslow on March 17, 2011, the board unanimously voted to change the name and to add the tagline ancestral Hopi villages to the park.The Homol'ovi cluster of archaeological sites includes seven separate pueblo ruins built by various prehistoric people, including ancestors of the Hopi people, between approximately 1260-1400 AD. This fertile area is on a floodplain of the Little Colorado River, and the inhabitants grew cotton, corn, beans, and squash.
The people of this period are called Hisat'sinom, which is the Hopi word for long-ago people. They are often referred to as Anasazi, as the Navajo guides who helped nineteenth-century anthropologists and archaeologists called them. However, the word Anasazi is Navajo for enemies of our ancestors, and the present-day Hopi population prefer to refer to them as the Hisat'sinom.[2]

Free developed and paved camping is difficult to find across the United States but in Winslow, Arizona McHood Park & Campground is just that - FREE! After dry camping 11 nights at McHood Campground I can tell you this is an excellent place to camp for free just an hour away from the Petrified Forest National Park!

Ancient Anasazi art on display at 'Rock Art Ranch' near Winslow, Arizona
Just outside of Winslow, sits a piece of land known as the Rock Art Ranch. It's about 17 miles southwest of Winslow and southeast of Holbrook, to be exact. A bit of a barren and bumpy ride with some mostly dirt roads but once you arrive, ranch owner Brantley Baird, who's been on the property since 1945, is happy to show you around.

Day five of our road trip across the southwest United States took us from Los Alamos, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona. The drive was I-25 and I-40 through and around places like the historic Route 66 in Winslow, AZ.The video was created with timelapse via a GoPro camera mounted on the dashboard of my Toyota Rav4. Stills were taken at a rate of 1 per second. The area around Winslow was done as a full video instead of a time lapse.

We were in no hurry to leave, and didn't start moving around in the RV until after 7am. Bennie came buy, we found out that he retired from the BNSF railroad as a dispatcher, and also a photographer. Yes, we swapped a few railroad war stories. He showed me a clock that he made for this state park, and has made several clocks for other NM State Parks he worked in. He & his wife are also avid RV'ers, and have been long before the term RV was coined. Since we changed our minds about going North of I40, Bennie gave us several suggestions on his favorite spots in Arizona, after all he was from there. We are getting close to the Arizona State line on I40 now. 1:40pm 2-6-2015!!
Stopped at the Arizona Tourist Station, and loaded up with brochures of interesting places to visit. Planned out the rest of the days adventures, with a stop at the Petrified Forest National Monument, and made reservations with the Homolovi Ruins State Park. Petrified Forest National Forest/Pained Desert was a beautiful drive through. There was an old car on the section of Route 66. I took a photo of the car and you can see the depressions in the ground of were Route 66 was, and a string of old telephone poles still standing along the side where the old road was. We were told that at 5pm, we needed to exit the park. We were at the petrified bridge at 5pm, and a Ranger kindly reminded us it was time to leave. We arrived at Homolovi State Park at dark, second time we had to set up camp in the dark.

A short video of Red Rock Park. Had a wonderful stay at Red Rock Park in Church Rock, New Mexico, which used to be a State Park now owned by the city. A beautiful Park surrounded by three sides of a canyon. The Park is just East of Gallup New Mexico on I-40. Also if you get the chance Visit the flea market in Gallup on Saturdays, It's well worth it. No Chinese Stuff here :) also if you can don't miss the El Rancho Hotel which is a great place for dinner.
