Honey Islands: Cajun Encounters Swamp Tour
Honey Islands near New Orleans, Louisiana! It has history. Vast of trees. Alligators. Boars. Raccoons. We see beauty.
We took a swamp tour with Cajun Encounters and were really thrilled that they provide an American Sign Language interpreter!!!! The staff accommodate with us, exchanging email/text, providing an interpreter, and having a wide space to see the swamp. We recommend this! I mean, they believe that being Deaf shouldn’t be held back to have fun!
If you’re going to Louisiana (or even other eastern southern states), you can’t miss the swamp! especially if you love to explore nature and wildlife.

Insta360 One: Swamp & Bayou - September 2018 - New Orleans Travel Vlog
Experience Louisiana’s wildlife and exotic plant life with Jean Lafitte Swamp & Airboat Tours, headquartered near New Orleans in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. A Captain guided us along swamps and bayous, where we came face-to-face with alligators, different species of birds, and other wildlife.
We learned a lot about Alligators: It is distinguished by its wide, rounded snout and black color. The American alligator lives in the southern United States, from North Carolina to Texas. Alligators can't control their temperature internally, so when they are cold, they sunbathe, and when they are hot, they go for a swim or sink beneath the mud. As soon as they are born, the babies, called hatchlings, can go and catch their own food. American hatchlings are around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) long. After around two years, they leave their mother's protection to start their own families. Excess calories are stored in fat deposits at the base of the alligator's tail. Incredibly, by burning fat reserves, it is possible for an alligator to last more than two years between feedings.
I even got to hold a baby alligator! Though, I hate reptiles and rodents… I can’t put my finger on why I hate those creatures; it may be cultural or psychological or both. And I wonder, how and why I did hold it. I think the big factor for the exception, our Captain “humanized” it… called it “Baby Benny,” danced it around, and wagged it’s feet in a “hello” gesture. However, the disturbing bit was it was stored in a cooler for a good hour before our Captain took it out for show and tell as part of the tour! I was a bit put off by that, not sure how appropriate that is. Then, it was placed back into the cooler after everyone has had the chance to hold it. But the Captain informed us that it is perfectly comfortable chillin in the cooler, and will be released into the wild when it gets bigger… I hope so!

Original Honey Island New Orleans Louisiana Swamp Tour 2013
Original Honey Island Swamp Tour 2013.
Featuring a massacre of marshmallows and hotdogs, plus about 30 minutes of actual swamp. Quite a lot of fun, and our guide was great. It was quite a pleasant journey, and the swamp was much more beautiful than I had expected, I just wish it was less river and more swamp.

Bayou Camping | New Orleans, Louisiana | Bayou Segnette State Park
On this trip we wanted to escape the cold weather in Arkansas, so we drove south to New Orleans, Louisiana. We camped at Bayou Segnette State Park . This was an amazing experience. Nice facilities, and great campground. With a short 15 min drive to the French Quarter, this made for a great location to set up camp. One of the main desires was to eat at some amazing places. Below is a list of all the places we enjoyed.
-Saint Lawrence
-Cafe Du Monde
-Napoleon House
-Nola Brewing Tap Room
-SoBou Restaurant
-French Truck Coffee
-Slim Goodies Diner
Also on the trip we rented bikes and explored all of downtown New Orleans. We rented bikes from FreeWheelin' Bike Tours & Rental. The crew here was amazing, and had great bikes.
Honey Island Swamp Tour & The Right Way to Travel Full-Time (No FOMO)
On this Airstream Life vLog, we celebrate Fat Tuesday (the culmination of Mardi Gras) in Louisiana our own way. We do not go into New Orleans. We weren't planning to be in New Orleans for Mardi Gras but it worked out that way. We thought that meant we should go into the city for the parades and craziness and we stress ourselves out over it. We finally realized we need to not let FOMO get in the way of how we like to travel and what we like to do. Crowds and cold weather are not our deal. So we stayed home for Fat Tuesday and watched it on TV. A win for us.
The next day we do go out and go on a swamp tour! We decided to try a tour with Dr. Wagners at Honey Island Swamp. Even though it was cold with the boat, the experience was so much fun! No alligators this time of year (they are still hibernating) but the bayou and swamplands were gorgeous and peaceful.
To warm up we stop at Old Rail Brewing Company on our way back to the Airstream to enjoy some beer and some delicious southern food including some catfish. Yum! Finally, back at the Airstream, we take a walk along the Swamp boardwalk in Fairview-RIverside State Park and Steve gets creative with his macro photography.
Stay tuned for a day planned in New Orleans that goes all wrong in the next video.
