Cappadocia
As if plucked from a whimsical fairytale and set down upon the stark Anatolian plains, Cappadocia is a geological oddity of honeycombed hills and towering boulders of otherworldly beauty. The fantastical topography is matched by the human history here. People have long utilised the region's soft stone, seeking shelter underground and leaving the countryside scattered with fascinating troglodyte-style architecture. The fresco-adorned rock-cut churches of Göreme Open-Air Museum and the subterranean refuges of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı are the most famous sights, while simply bedding down in one of Cappadocia's cave hotels is an experience in 21st-century cavern dwelling.
Whether you're wooed here by the hiking potential, the history or the bragging rights of unique accommodation, it's the lunarscape panoramas that you'll remember. This region's accordion-ridged valleys, shaded in a palette of dusky orange and cream, are an epiphany of a landscape – the stuff of psychedelic daydreams.

ROUGH DAY IN CAPPADOCIA | Turkey Travel Vlog
Vlog #530 Cappadocia, Turkey // Today just wasn’t our day! This is one of the “rawest” vlogs we have ever posted. It started out great by getting up at sunrise to watch the hot air balloon festival that happens everyday in this beautiful town. Next we went on a super early walk to fly the drone, and unfortunately that ended badly by crashing into a ferry chimney… We still wanted to make the most of our last day by walking around the Goreme open air museum which was awesome. Then we took a picnic on a hike until it started raining! This where we had to end this video… so to see what happens, we will post the next video on Tuesday!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
Cappadocia Land of Fairy Chimneys (Turkey 1)
The Göreme National Park is a World Heritage Site in the Nevşehir Province of Central Anatolia. The Hoodoo rock formations are large rock formations that were formed between 70 and 75 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. The lava came from the eruption of the volcano, Mount Erciyes (ancient Argaeus) being 3916 m high. Erosion over many millennia sculpted curvy cliff faces and pointy, fairy, rock spires. Traditional Cappadocian houses and pigeonholes were carved out in the soft rock.
The fairy chimneys really are a fairyland! Let your mind relax and you can see Bugs Bunny, dogs kissing or whatever you want to see!
A hike through the Rose Valley followed by the Red Valley is a great experience: towering rocks, tunnels through the rocks, pigeonholes high in the cliff faces, huge trees, to name but a few. The hike ends in Cavusin, an ancient village with hundreds of cave houses. The earthquake of 1963 destroyed many of the houses and the remaining ones will most probably not last too long.
Göreme is not only an interesting town but also picturesque and photogenic. Ordinary lights shining out of the large ant heaps create a special and beautiful night scene
We visited Kaymakli Underground city. The low and narrow tunnels provide access to eight floors of which only the first four are on display now It is unreal to think people lived there for months.
There are numerous restaurants along the streets. We had brunch and drinks at the Panorama café and dinner at the One Way restaurant where their pottery kebab is something unusual.
We paid a visit to the Government sponsored weaving school in Avanos. It is a great incentive of the government and a very interesting place to visit. Turkish silk carpets are just beautiful. What else can I say!
Turkish pottery has a tradition of excellence and perfection. Cappadocias pottery goes back to the Hittites. Ömürlü Ceramics is a family owned business since 1807. Exquisite and unique handcrafted pieces are sold exclusively through the showroom in Avanos. I left with a heavy heart - if only I could have.............!

Ihlara Valley (Peristrema) in Cappadocia - Turkey
Ihlara
Ihlara is a township with own municipality in Aksaray Province, Central Anatolia, Turkey. It is situated at about 40 km (25 mi) from the province seat of Aksaray and near the town of Güzelyurt. The township is famed for the nearby valley of the same name, Ihlara Valley, which is a 16 km (10 mi) long gorge cut into volcanic rock in the southern part of Cappadocia, following several eruptions of Mount Erciyes. The Melendiz Stream flows through the valley.
What makes the valley unique is the ancient history of its inhabitants. The whole canyon is honeycombed with rock-cut underground dwellings and churches from the Byzantine period built by the Cappadocian Greeks. These local people were forced to leave the area and move to Greece in the 1923 Population exchange between Turkey and Greece.[1][2]
Due the valley's plentiful supply of water and hidden places, this was the first settlement of the first Christians escaping from Roman soldiers. In the Ihlara Valley there are hundreds of old churches in the volcanic rock caves. The best-known churches are Ağaçaltı Church with cross plan, Sümbüllü Church, Pürenliseki Church, Kokar Church, Yilanli Church, Karagedik Church, Kirkdamatli Church, Direkli Church, Ala Church, Kemerli Church and Egritas Church.

Cappadocia
Erosion shaped the incredible landscape of the Göreme valley, but thousands of years ago humans took a cue from Mother Nature and began carving an incredible chamber and tunnel complex into the soft rock. Beginning in the fourth century A.D., an urbanized—but underground—cultural landscape was created here.
Ancient volcanic eruptions blanketed this region with thick ash, which solidified into a soft rock—called tuff—tens of meters thick. Wind and water went to work on this plateau, leaving only its harder elements behind to form a fairy tale landscape of cones, pillars, pinnacles, mushrooms, and chimneys, which stretch as far as 130 feet (40 meters) into the sky.
But human hands performed equally incredible works here. The rocky wonderland is honeycombed with a network of human-created caves; living quarters, places of worship, stables, and storehouses were all dug into the soft stone. In fact, tunnel complexes formed entire towns with as many as eight different stories hidden underground.
Göreme was inhabited as early as the Hittite era, circa 1800 to 1200 B.C. and later sat uncomfortably on the boundary between rival empires; first the Greeks and Persians and later the Byzantine Greeks and a host of rivals. This precarious political position meant that residents needed hiding places—and found them by tunneling into the rock itself.
The site became a religious refuge during the early days of Christianity. By the fourth century Christians fleeing Rome’s persecution had arrived in some numbers and established monastic communities here. The monks excavated extensive dwellings and monasteries and created Byzantine frescoed paintings in cave chapels beginning in the seventh century, which endure in well-preserved isolation to this day.
Göreme is rich with history, but not all of Cappadocia’s troglodyte dwellings are museums. Some still serve as homes and others as hotels, which offer a truly unique hospitality experience.
The primary threats to this World Heritage site come from the forces that created it in the first place. Erosion is returning some human endeavors to a more natural state, and extensive preservation efforts are meant to ensure that the wonders of Göreme survive for another millennium. With increased tourist trade, however, humans have brought modern development and damage or destruction to some of the ancient sites they once created.
