Abuse of foreign domestic helpers in Hong Kong prompts calls for better protection
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
Around 370,000 foreign domestic helpers work in Hong Kong, each earning a guaranteed minimum monthly salary of HK$4,520 (US$575). Lured by the promise of well-paid jobs, the reality for the helpers might be different. Several high-profile cases of helper abuse in the city have made international headlines and prompted rights groups to demand the government provide better protection.
HONG KONG WALKING TOUR IN CENTRAL (ULTRA HD 4K) - MANDARIN ORIENTAL HOTEL |香港文華東方酒店
#mandarinoriental #hongkong
Welcome to Hong Kong Walking Tour (shot in Ultra HD 4K) crystal clear quality. The walk begins in Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in Central, then onto Alexandra House, Chater House then onto the walkway that is linked to IFC. Most office buildings in Central are conveniently linked by walkways.
'Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港文華東方酒店) is a five-star hotel located on Connaught Road in Central, Hong Kong, owned and managed by Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. The hotel opened in 1963 as The Mandarin. In 2005, the hotel spent USD 150 million to renovate its 501 guestrooms, 10 restaurants, and numerous public spaces, as well as to construct the three-storey Mandarin Spa, one of a few Forbes Five-Star spas in Hong Kong.[2][3]
2005 renovation
The Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong has been noted for its interior decoration.[5] In 2005, authorisation was given for a total renovation of the hotel, and when it closed in December of that year the trading floor of the stock exchange held a mock two-minute silence in memory of the hotel. For the interim period during its renovation phase, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group launched an all-new property, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, located in The Landmark commercial and shopping complex only a five-minute walk away, in order to continue accommodating guests without interruption. The Landmark remained open following the renovation, but maintains a distinctly more modern interior aesthetic to distinguish it from the original property.[9] After a USD 150 million renovation, Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong re-opened its doors on 28 September 2006, marking the event with a black-tie gala hosted by Dame Edna Everage with a performance by Bryan Ferry.[5] The renowned lobby, Captain's Bar, The Clipper Lounge, and Chinnery Bar remained recognisable after the renovation, but the remaining restaurants, bars, public spaces, and rooms were entirely new.[3]
The hotel contains 501 guestrooms, 67 of which are suites, overlooking Victoria Harbour and the surrounding cityscape. Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong operates ten restaurants and bars, including the Michelin-starred Pierre, Chef Pierre Gagnaire's first restaurant in Hong Kong.[10][11] Additional facilities include the three-story Mandarin Spa, indoor swimming pool, fitness centre, Mandarin Salon, and event space to accommodate functions of up to 600 people.[4]
The Mandarin Spa
The Mandarin Spa, opened in 2007, encompasses 2,100 m2 (23,000 sq ft) across three stories and incorporates an indoor swimming pool, fitness centre, holistic spa, Mandarin Salon, and Mandarin Barber. The spa draws on the established Asian healing philosophies of traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda. Additional features include an ice fountain, Chinese herb steam rooms, hydrotherapy, and the Kneipp pool.[2][12]

A view up Hong Kong Central Library
Showing the central inside of Hong Kong Central Library!
Hong Kong Central Library is the biggest Library in Hong Kong. It is on Hong Kong Island, Causeway Road. Opposite to the library is Victoria Park.
You can get there by going to Causeway Bay and Tin Hau MTR Station!
Time in Hong Kong Central Library
Tempat 'ngadem' Asyik adalah perpustakaan. Terutama Central Library ini, lanjut toko buku The Comercial Press.

This is the first part 4 of my Hong Kong Travel Vlog
Even though it’s only four MTR stops from Central and a mere five-minute walk from Causeway Bay, this laid-back neighbourhood is a world away from the busy city life of Hong Kong. Located near the beautiful Victoria Park, Tin Hau and its surrounding streets are littered with fashion boutiques, beauty salons, bars and restaurants of every cuisine imaginable – making it the perfect place to chill and relax! There’s also lot of attractions that you can visit in Tin Hau such as the Tin Hau Temple, Hong Kong central library, Causeway Bay Markets etc.
Unfortunately my time is limited so I couldn’t go to a lot of places, we drop by Café de Coral for lunch it was yummy! Café de Coral is Hong Kong’s largest, most successful Chinese fast-food brand.
Thank you for watching! Next video will be up very soon! The drone video will be up soon too!

About this video
Dennis Chua visits Tin Hau in Hong Kong. Tin Hau is known as the empress of heaven and a protector of sea travellers, and she is worshipped throughout Asia under various names. Visit the Causeway Bay temple for a peaceful oasis in the midst of Hong Kong. Many temples throughout Hong Kong honour the goddess Tin Hau, but the Tin Hau Temple in Causeway Bay is the most famous. Tin Hau is an area in Wan Chai District, in the north of Hong Kong Island, in Hong Kong. We stayed at the Metro Park Hotel which is situated not too far from the Tin Hau station. Hong Kong increases measures to contain spread of Wuhan coronavirus

Authorities in Hong Kong have stepped up measures to prevent the spread of Wuhan coronavirus. Major tourist attractions and public facilities including museums and libraries are closed until further notice. Most of the city's civil servants are being asked to work from home until at least February 2. Residents of Hubei province, of which Wuhan is the capital, are also being denied entry into Hong Kong, as are people who visited Hubei in the past 14 days, unless they are Hong Kong residents.

ULTRA HD 4K HONG KONG WALKING TOUR - HENNESSY ROAD WANCHAI | CAUSEWAY BAY |WANCHAI
#wanchai #walking #4kwalking #hongkong #discoverhongkong
Welcome to our Hong Kong Walking Tour where we start from Times Square, then move onto Hennessy Road from Causeway Bay towards Wanchai, then we walk to the Hong Kong Central Library, then to Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay. Unfortunately, we cannot shoot a video inside the Hong Kong Central Library but I can tell you it is very impressive. Our video is shot in Ultra HD 4K, crystal clear quality, as if you are actually here.
This part of Hong Kong is very popular amongst locals, as Causeway Bay and Wanchai is packed with shops and restaurants and is home to many local businesses.
The massive Iron Man statue is to celebrate and promote the 2019 Avengers 4 End Game which is currently being shown in all cinemas.
'Hennessy Road (Chinese: 軒尼詩道) is a thoroughfare on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It connects Yee Wo Street on the east in Causeway Bay, and Queensway on the western end in Wan Chai.
It is a two-way road with 2 to 3 lanes of traffic on each side,Trams travel along parts of the road. The road was built in the 20th century and is 1.86 kilometres long in length.
The road is named after John Pope Hennessy, the Governor of Hong Kong between 1877 and 1882.
The portion of the road passing through Causeway Bay was one of the locations occupied during the 2014 Hong Kong protests.[1][2]. Sogo Hong Kong – department store at 555 Hennessy Road, since 1985[3]
Hysan Place – shopping mall and office building at 500 Hennessy Road. It is developed by Hysan Development Company Limited at the former site of Hennessy Centre and due for completion in August 2012.[4] The tram once set up its terminal at the end of this street in 20th century.(the former site of the Times Square (Hong Kong). It now passes through the street till both ends of the Hong Kong Island.
As it is heavily loaded during rush hour, long haul bus routes are particularly avoided visiting this road. South Island[5]
Every time a public event takes place nearby, flow control will be established for both Causeway Bay (MTR) and ground level.[6]'
The above excerpt is from Wikipedia.
'Hong Kong Central Library is the largest library in Hong Kong, flagship library of Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) and using of Hong Kong Public Library headquarter, functioning as the territory's National Library. It is located at the intersection of Moreton Terrace and Causeway Road in Causeway Bay.
Facing Victoria Harbour, the 12-storey high building occupies a gross area of 9,400 square metres (101,000 sq ft) with a floor area of 33,800 square metres (364,000 sq ft). The building cost of the Central Library was HK$690 million ($88 million). The Library's collections amount to one fifth of the Hong Kong Public Libraries System; 2.3 million items out of the total 12.1 million items.
The library's 11th floor houses the HKPL head office.[1][2] The arch-shaped doorway atop the front facade of the Hong Kong Central Library symbolises the Gate to Knowledge, while the triangle, square and circle which make up the arch all carry further meaning. The circle represents the sky, the square the land and the triangle the accretion of knowledge. When it was originally proposed, the design was controversial and received critiques from Urban Council members.'

travel Hong Kong - Causeway Bay 銅鑼灣
Causeway Bay (Traditional Chinese: 銅鑼灣) is a heavily built-up area of Hong Kong, located on the Hong Kong Island, and covering parts of Wan Chai and Eastern districts. The Chinese name is also romanized as Tung Lo Wan as in Tung Lo Wan Road (銅鑼灣道). The rent in the shopping areas of Causeway Bay was ranked as the world's most expensive after overtaking New York's Fifth Avenue in 2012.
Causeway Bay borders the Eastern District. These areas include Tsing Fung Street, Causeway Bay market, the Victoria Park, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, Jardine's Noonday Gun and the Police Officers Club. West of these sites, are Queen's College and the Hong Kong Central Library which belong to the Wan Chai District.
Since 1982, two sub-districts of Causeway Bay (Causeway Bay North, and Causeway Bay South) have been grouped into the Eastern District of district board elections whilst Causeway Bay Middle was grouped with the Wan Chai District to the west. However, local government decisions other than electoral demarcations still affect the region as a whole. Since 1994, Hong Kong district board elections are further sub-divided into smaller districts. The northern sector consists of the area around Victoria Park, the middle sector coincides with the central business district, and the southern sector forms the area around Tin Hau.
Regional and city-based government organizations, like the Causeway Bay Market, the fire station, and the Social Services Department are allocated to build in the eastern part, while business and shopping facilities are allocated into the western part.
History
The typhoon shelter of Causeway Bay and the Tin Hau Temple reveal that the area was once a fishing village. Before urban development and massive land reclamation, Causeway Bay was a heavily silted bay. Its former shape can be found on maps by tracing Tung Lo Wan Road, which goes along the former bay. In the early stage of development a causeway was built, which is the present-day Causeway Road. In the 1950s, the coastline was further pushed forward when the remains of the bay was reclaimed for the Victoria Park, when the statue of Queen Victoria was brought back from Japan. The statue had been taken away during the Second World War from Statue Square at Chater Road, Central. Kellett Island off the coast of Causeway Bay has disappeared and connected as a result of the land reclamation.
The names of Yee Wo Street, Jardine's Bazaar and Jardine's Crescent reveal that the land in this area was sold by the British colonial government to Jardines in the early 19th century. The area was therefore named East Point, after a pointed place on the coastline, east from the centre of Victoria City.
The present-day Causeway Bay is usually confused with East Point, the former having assimilated the latter. The original Causeway Bay is near the present-day Tin Hau MTR station, whereas the Causeway Bay MTR station is at East Point. The present-day concept of the Causeway Bay area covers all the way until Canal Road (Canal Road East and Canal Road West), or the Canal Road district or in Chinese Ngo Keng Kiu (鵝頸橋), lit., the bridge of a goose's neck.
East Point is now regarded as part of Causeway Bay as result of assimilation of the geographical name. An East Point Road can still be found, which reveals the pointed coastline in the early days, prior to reclamation.
Features
Causeway Bay or East Point is one of Hong Kong's major shopping districts. It includes the 13-storey Japanese department store Sogo and Times Square, an indoor shopping complex. There are also smaller malls such as World Trade Centre, Windsor House, Hang Lung Centre, Fashion Island, Fashion Walk, Lee Gardens and Lee Gardens Two. Causeway Bay is one of the most crowded areas in Hong Kong since it contains many trendy shops carrying both locally made fashion and products from Japan, Europe and the United States. As such, it is a popular social spot for young people.
Many shops are open until well after midnight.
Notable hotels in Causeway Bay include The Excelsior and Regal HongKong Hotel. Modern service apartments such as Jia and Shama Serviced Apartments have opened in the past few years.
For years, Jardine Matheson has fired a cannon shot at noon every day in Causeway Bay, by Victoria Harbour, slightly eastward of the former Kellett Island. The gunshots have served as time signals for many generations of old inhabitants of Hong Kong. This tradition still continues today. This is the Noonday Gun mentioned in the Noël Coward song Mad Dogs and Englishmen.
Note that although the names of certain landmarks in the western part of Causeway Bay start with Wan Chai (e.g. Wan Chai Fire Station), the landmarks are across the local customary limit of Wan Chai on Canal Road.
