Hong Kong : Star Of China - Documentary
Laser beams shoot skywards, prolonging the angles of skyscrapers set in neon. Over the bay, the heavy sails of a junk reflect the flashing colours, while streaks of light glisten in the wake of the Star ferry. Fascinating. Throughout the documentary, Pierre Brouwers dazzles us with the power of his images and the passion with which he explores a city whose ambition is to serve as a benchmark for Asia.

With original music by Tom Fox:
Hong Kong is the most expensive housing market in the world. It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life.
Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin.
I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight.
To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong.

Fading memories of Ma Wan Island's village, a Hong Kong ghost town
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
Most visitors to Hong Kong arrive from the city’s international airport via the Tsing Ma Bridge, one of the world’s longest suspension spans connecting the islands of Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. But few notice the ghostly ruins of Ma Wan Village just northwest of the structure.
The once-thriving fishing and farming community first settled over 200 years ago, was earmarked for redevelopment in 1997. A dispute over the property halted development and has left the village frozen in a state of decay for decades.

Correction at 7:48: The protester says “They are not doing this for themselves, but for the future of Hong Kong.”
Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland China to be tried in court. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says the bill is meant to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a safe haven for fugitives. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.
At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. But protesters aren't accepting the suspension, and have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They've also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.
But this rise in tensions is about a lot more than a bill. To understand why this bill hits a nerve with Hongkongers, it's important to understand Hong Kong’s relationship with China - and exactly how the bill would tip the scales in China’s favor.

When Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997, Chinese leaders agreed that Hong Kong would be able to keep its economic and political systems, including some of the civil freedoms denied to China’s citizens on the mainland, for the next 50 years.
Although Hong Kong still has nearly 30 years of semi-autonomy left, China has started tightening its grip, and many believe it is chipping away at Hong Kong’s freedoms. In this episode, I explore how Hong Kong is dealing with the looming deadline and China’s premature moves.

Around 370,000 foreign domestic helpers work in Hong Kong, each earning a guaranteed minimum monthly salary of HK$4,520 (US$575). Several high-profile cases of helper abuse in the city have made international headlines and prompted rights groups to demand the government provide better protection.

The rift between rich and poor in Hong Kong is profound. Despite being the global capital of the super-wealthy, the premium on space has driven 200,000 people to live in inhumanly cramped conditions.

The Horrible Plight of Hong Kong's Poor
Cage People (1995): Near Hong Kong's Kowloon shopping district the city's poor suffer in squalid conditions. A man crouches in a tiny wire cage hardly bigger than a child's cot. It's been his home for 30 years. He is one of Hong Kong's hidden poor - a worker that nobody wants.

Soaring rents and unemployment have forced an increasing number of people below the poverty line. While the rich business elite of Hong Kong line their pockets, state-welfare is still a dirty word. Despite the government's budget surplus there is no minimum wage or unemployment benefit. Meanwhile inflation, together with cheap Chinese workers, threatens to force more and more people out of work. Waiting lists for housing can be seven years and suicide rates are high. Dignity is an important concept for the Chinese and many regard a caged existence as hardly worth living.

Hong Kong is one of those cities for all your senses to feast on. Below the iconic skylines of steal and concrete lie mazes of activity with rich Chinese heritage. I spent 5 days over the Chinese new year riding the tram and getting lost wherever I could to capture as much of this amazing city as I could. This film is a window into life in Hong Kong through the vivid imagination of a little girl. It's a bit different to what I normally do so let me know what you think.

China says violent protests in Hong Kong are 'undisguised challenge', reports state TV
China regards the violent actions of some protesters in Hong Kong as an 'undisguised challenge' to the 'one country, two systems' formula under which the city is ruled, state television reported on Tuesday. A representative of China's Hong Kong affairs office condemned the violence of some protesters, who are angered by a proposed extradition bill, and said Beijing supported the Hong Kong government in holding violent criminals responsible, the report said
