Hong Kong’s famous skyline is known for its colorful lights and modern buildings, but a closer look reveals some unique designs inspired by feng shui. Like the gaping holes in the middle of buildings to let dragons fly through or cannon-like structures installed to deflect bad “qi” (pronounced chi).
The main belief in feng shui is that destiny is bound to the environment, so good fortune and harmony can be invited in and bad energy can be warded off by arranging objects and buildings around us. It's an ancient Chinese practice that has come to define Hong Kong's skyline.
In this episode of Borders, we explore feng shui principles, explain the circumstances that allowed it to flourish in Hong Kong and take a look at the unique designs around the city.

When Britain handed Hong Kong back to China in 1997, Chinese leaders agreed that Hong Kong would be able to keep its economic and political systems, including some of the civil freedoms denied to China’s citizens on the mainland, for the next 50 years.
Although Hong Kong still has nearly 30 years of semi-autonomy left, China has started tightening its grip, and many believe it is chipping away at Hong Kong’s freedoms. In this episode, I explore how Hong Kong is dealing with the looming deadline and China’s premature moves.

New Year's 2020: Hong Kong skyline illuminated with electric light show | FULL
A dazzling light show illuminated the Hong Kong skyline to celebrate the new year on Monday as protests continued across the city.
This replaced the larger annual midnight fireworks display which the city normally holds, which was cancelled by authorities citing security concerns.
On the same day, pro-democracy protesters formed human chains to block roads and were arrested by riot police in the latest anti-government demonstrations.

Hong Kong 4K - Morning Skyline Views - Driving Downtown
Quiet Sunday morning drive from Kowloon, through the Western Harbour Crossing Tunnel, passing through the Central District of Hong Kong Island, and up to the top of Victoria's Peak. Seeing lots of skyscrapers? Hong Kong has more than any other city in the world.
Hong Kong; Chinese: 香港, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (HKSAR), is a special administrative region on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. With over 7.4 million people of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports. It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer, and its legal tender (the Hong Kong dollar) is the world's 9th-most traded currency (as of 2019). Hong Kong hosts the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, there is severe income inequality.
Hong Kong is a highly developed territory and ranks seventh on the UN Human Development Index. The city has the largest number of skyscrapers of any city in the world and its residents have some of the longest life expectancies in the world. Over 90% of its population uses public transportation. Air pollution has resulted in a high level of atmospheric particulates in the city.
Hong Kong Island (Chinese: 香港島; Cantonese Yale: Hēunggóng dóu) is an island in the southern part of Hong Kong. The Central area on the island is the historical, political and economic centre of Hong Kong. The northern coast of the island forms the southern shore of the Victoria Harbour, which is largely responsible for the development of Hong Kong due to its deep waters favoured by large trade ships.
The island is home to many of the most famous sights in Hong Kong, such as The Peak, Ocean Park, many historical sites and various large shopping centres. The mountain ranges across the island are also famous for hiking. The northern part of Hong Kong Island, together with Kowloon and Tsuen Wan New Town, forms the core urban area of Hong Kong.
Victoria Peak is a hill on the western half of Hong Kong Island. It is also known as Mount Austin, and locally as The Peak. With an elevation of 552 m (1,811 ft), it is the highest hill on Hong Kong island, ranked 31 in terms of elevation in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Tai Mo Shan is the highest point in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with an elevation of 957 m (3,140 ft)).
The summit is occupied by a radio telecommunications facility and is closed to the public. However, the surrounding area of public parks and high-value residential land is the area that is normally meant by the name The Peak. It is a major tourist attraction that offers views of Central, Victoria Harbour, Lamma Island, and the surrounding islands.

Let's Go - Hong Kong
'Let's Go' on an journey through the vibrant & futuristic city of Hong Kong.
This territory was a former British Colony that in 1997 was taken back by the Chinese Government - after 157 years! With the most skyscrapers in the world, over double that of NYC, Hong Kong is known for the eclectic blend of new and old - with buildings built of LED panels budding up to hundred year old temples.
Being one of the most densely populated areas in the world, somehow over 40% of the territory is dedicated to country parks and natural reserves. This city is truly a city of contrasts.

HONG KONG | SAR - CHINA - A TRAVEL TOUR - 4K UHD - PREVIEW 2
My next travel tour video explores Hong Kong.
#HongKong #4K #BladeRunner
As the work continues to prepare the full travel video for release, I have put together this second preview using footage from the travel video.
As with the first preview, this one is cinematic in nature, aspiring to show the ' cyberpunk ' side of Hong Kong. My inspiration was the ambiance from the 1982 sci-fi film classic ' Blade Runner '.
The music track used in the preview is called ' Blade Runner Blues ', by the one and only legend ' Vangelis '.
Enjoy and stay tuned for the full travel video, coming soon!
Hong Kong - City Video Guide
Located on China's south coast, Hong Kong offers some of the world's most intense shopping, sightseeing and dining experiences, yet moments of stillness await at every turn.
Hong Kong has over 600 places of worship, from neighborhood temples to hilltop monasteries.
Shopping is almost a religion too! From opulent malls like Pacific Place to the markets of Temple Street, tax-free Hong Kong is heaven for bargain hunters.
From Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, hop aboard a Star Ferry for the crossing to Hong Kong Island. Explore the futuristic architecture of Hong Kong's main business district, Central, then take a tram to Victoria Peak.
Hong Kong offers plenty of green spaces, such as Kowloon's Walled City Park. Outside the urban areas, over forty percent of the territory has been designated as national park.
Spend a day on the tranquil beaches of Shek O, or hike the trails of Lamma Island. On Lantau Island take the cable car to the Po Lin Monestry and the Tian Tan Buddah, then explore the traditional fishing village of Tai O.
At the end of the day, cruise the bars and restaurants in fashionable Soho and Lan Kwai Fong.
Hong Kong Food Tour - Breakfast, Bamboo Noodles Won Ton, and Chinese Dai Pai Dong Feast!

►Subscribe to my videos:
On Day 37 of our Round The World Trip For Food, we continued the food tour of Hong Kong starting with a classic Hong Kong breakfast of lemon tea and a beef and scrambled egg sandwich. We then had some delicious bamboo pounded noodles and wonton, and then continued to have dinner at a famous dai pai dong.
00:29 Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記 Thank you to Josephine for this recommendation) - For breakfast in Hong Kong we headed over to Sham Shui Po and went to a classic Hong Kong cafe and restaurant called Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記). I ordered my usual hot lemon tea, a glass of black tea with a half of a lemon chopped up inside. It was wonderful. We then had a beef and scrambled egg sandwich, which was surprisingly much better than I thought it was going to be. The bread was toasted wonderfully and the beef and eggs on the inside tasted so good, fried in what I think was butter. Total price - 33 HKD ($4.25)
4:58 Sham Shui Po market - After eating breakfast we walked around the Sham Shui Po market, a local fresh wet market in Hong Kong. The market was busy and stocked with everything you could imaging that goes into Hong Kong food.
6:29 Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面) - There are many famous restaurants in Hong Kong that serve egg noodles and wonton, but I really wanted to find a restaurant that specialized in bamboo kneaded noodles, which is becoming harder and harder to find in Hong Kong. So finally I found a place called Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面), a new restaurant that uses the owner's family recipe and technique for making his noodles. I was hoping to get to see the noodles being made, but unfortunately they weren’t making them at the time we got there to eat. Nevertheless, the noodles were still made using a bamboo pole to knead the dough. The noodles were amazing, had such a fantastic texture to them, and the wontons were equally as delicious. It was a fantastic noodle eating experience in Hong Kong. Total price - 84 HKD ($10.83)
13:11 Mong Kok, Ladies Market - Mongkok is one of the most famous areas in Hong Kong for shopping, and we walked around the area for a little bit. Ladies Market is a walking street flea market where you’ll find everything from clothes to souvenirs to luggage.
16:40 Tsim Sha Tsui, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Star Ferry - 2.3 HKD ($0.30) - After walking around Mongkok we took the bus over to Tsim Sha Tsui to walk around and enjoy the views of the skyline of Hong Kong.
18:26 Tung Po Restaurant at Java Road Market (Thank you to Charles for this recommendation) - For dinner, we went to Java Road Market, and to a restaurant called Tung Po, that’s a well known dai pai dong restaurant within the market. They serve a huge menu of different Cantonese and even Thai dishes. My wife and I ordered a couple of different dishes, the highlight of the meal being the razor clams stir fried in black bean sauce. In addition to the food, the ambiance of the restaurant is exactly what you want in Hong Kong. Total price - 464 HKD ($59.83)
26:00 A Symphony of Lights - Finally to end this day of food in Hong Kong we went back to Tsim Sha Tsui to see the symphony of lights show.

Hong Kong Protests Aftermath 4K
Saturday morning drive in Hong Kong to check out the protest aftermath. I could hear the protesters from my hotel as I was checking late Friday night. So I woke up around sunrise to see what was left. I was surprised by the aftermath. Broken storefront glass (Starbucks, banks, etc), trash, graffiti, remains of roadblocks, etc. Pretty intense gatherings once the sun goes down. Very different from the Paris protests late last year.
Fun facts about Hong Kong: Hong Kong hosts the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, there is severe income inequality. The city has the largest number of skyscrapers of any city in the world and its residents have some of the longest life expectancies in the world. With over 7.4 million people of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after Qing China ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War, and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. The territory was transferred to China in 1997. As a special administrative region, Hong Kong maintains separate governing and economic systems from that of mainland China under the principle of one country, two systems.
Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centres and commercial ports. It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer, and its legal tender (the Hong Kong dollar) is the world's 13th-most traded currency.
