Jeju
While just a ferry ride from bustling mainland South Korea, the island paradise of Jeju – one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature feels worlds away.
Canopied in thick pine forests, breathtaking rock formations, and breathtaking beaches, Jeju is a famous escape for adventurers and beach bums alike. Its most noteworthy attractions include Seongsan Illchulbong Peak, Hamdeok Beach, Halla Mountain, and Jeongbang Waterfall.
Ulleungdo
Situated 120 kilometers off the eastern coast of South Korea, Ulleungdo Island is known for its peaceful blue waves, revitalizing mountain scenery, and breathtaking sunsets. Often referred to as the “Mysterious Island,” this popular vacation destination is the major fishery of the eastern coast and draws tourists with its tantalizing seafood. It’s also a favorite spot for soaking up Korea’s natural beauty, which is best experienced on the Haengnam Coastal Walking Path, which stretches along the periphery of the island.
Hongdo
Part of Dadohaehaesang National Park, the rocky, miniscule Hongdo Island was named for the crimson (“hong”) light that encapsulates the entire island at sunset. Its shores are lined with cliffs, each possessing its own unique formation, that tower over the South Sea’s blue oceans. The island’s 6.47 square kilometers are home to approximately 270 subspecies of evergreen including rare reeds, as well as about 170 species of animals.
Geojedo
Connected to the mainland by the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link bridge and tunnel, Korea’s second-largest island is reputed not only for its colossal shipbuilding industry, but also its natural beauty. Geojedo’s coastal scenery deviates between pastoral and industrial, with the best views in and around the Haegeumgang rock formations.
Other representative attractions of the island include its grassy green hill by the sea, the “Hill of the Wind,” and Hakdong Black Pearl Mongdol Beach, a black pebble beach that comes to life in the summertime.
Oedo
Hallyeo Maritime National Park’s Oedo Island is often called the “Paradise of Korea,” and for good reason. Essentially a giant botanical garden, Oedo was established in the 1970s by Lee Chang-ho and his wife. Since then, it has been transformed into an exotic attraction of more than 3,000 plant species including many subtropical plants, such as cacti, palm trees, and gazanias. Adding to the scenery are Mediterranean-style buildings and statues, which have been used as the backdrop for a number of Korean dramas.
Jindo
Jindo, the third-largest island in Korea, is particularly famous for the Jindo dog, a gorgeous breed known for its unsurpassed loyalty and “Jindo Arirang,” Korea’s best-known folk song. But the Miracle Sea Road Festival is certainly the biggest draw of Jeollanam Province‘s most popular island. During the annual festival, which takes place for a few days during the spring, visitors can watch as the sea mysteriously “parts,” and can walk along the revealed 2.8-kilometer-long road from Jindo to nearby Modo Island. The occurrence, as magical as it seems, is actually a natural tidal phenomenon.

Hongdo is an island in the Yellow Sea located 115 km from the southwest coast of Mokpo port, Jeollanam-do, South Korea.. the highest peaks of which are Gitdaebong (깃대봉 378 m) and Yangsanbong (양산봉 231 m).[1] It is within the administrative boundaries of Sinan County, Jeollanam-do, South Korea.
On Hongdo, meaning Red Island due to the red coloring found on many of the rocky outcroppings, there are about 270 varieties of evergreens and 170 species of animals. The government wished to preserve the natural state of the island so Hongdo was designated as a Natural Preserve Area in 1965, and became part of Dadohae Marine National Park in 1981.

Dadohaehaesang
South Korea’s largest national park is located in the beautiful province of Jeollanam-do in the southwest of the country. While it is the biggest in terms of size, it’s also only one of four marine and coastal national parks in the country.
The three islands of Hongdo, Heuksando, and Baekdo are the main attractions. Visitors are able to spot over 1,500 plant species, over 140 different kinds of birds and over 150 ocean water fish.
Seoraksan
This national park is one of the most popular in the country due to its beautiful mountain ranges and natural landscape. It is known for its large pine trees and a great variety of oak trees. Seoraksan is extremely popular in the fall due to the picturesque fall foliage.
Bukhansan
Being the closest national park to Korea’s capital, Bukhansan is especially popular amongst tourists. While the park features scenic hiking routes, it also has a couple of temples you can stop by along the way. Some of them even offer templestay programs that allow you to spend a few days living among the monks experiencing the modest Buddhist lifestyle.
Hallasan
The southernmost national park in South Korea, Hallasan is one of Jeju Island’s most visited attractions. Not only is Hallasan the tallest peak in the country, but it’s also a shield volcano that formed millions of years ago. Visitors can enjoy seven different trails in the park, ranging in distance from 1.5km to over 9km long.
Gyeongju National Park
Gyeongju is home to the country’s only historical national park. From 57 BC to 935 AD, Gyeongju was the capital city of the Silla Dynasty in Korea. Therefore, you can expect to see some of Korea’s oldest structures in this national park. One of the most impressive sites is the Anapji royal pond garden, as well as the temple of Bulguksa.
Jirisan
Being the largest terrestrial national park in the country, there is a lot to see at Jirisan National Park. This national park is one of the best sunrise spots in the country and offers spectacular scenic views during all four seasons.Follow the many paths in the park and you will come across exceptional flora and fauna as well as temples and pagodas.
Songnisan
Visiting this national park, visitors start their journey at Beopjusa Temple at the foot of the mountain range. The temple is one of the oldest in South Korea and was constructed in 653.Songnisan is well visited all year round, but it truly comes to life in spring when the brilliant pink azaleas bloom on all sides of the mountain. Moreover, Songnisan is the most central national park in the country making it easy to reach the park from almost anywhere in Korea.

Ferry runs aground in Korea′s southwest, all passengers rescued

While that political gridlock continues at the National Assembly... there were fresh concerns about another ferry accident earlier in the day.
A ferry... ran aground in waters off Korea′s southwestern island... this Tuesday morning.
The one-hundred-4 passengers and five crew members that were aboard the ship,... were rescued safely.
It reportedly struck a rock in waters near Hongdo Island in Jeollanam-do province, at around 9 a.m.
The Coast Guard said.... everyone was evacuated from the ferry in 20 minutes... and that they were taken to a nearby port on the island.

Mokpo (Korean pronunciation: [mok̚.pʰo]; Mokpo-si) is a city in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, located at the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula, close to Yudal mountain. Mokpo has frequent train service connecting in Daejon to Seoul, and is the terminus for a number of ferry routes serving islands in the adjacent Yellow Sea and Dadohae National Maritime Park.
During the Japanese Occupation (1910–1945), Mokpo served as a crucial port for both commercial ventures and public transportation, due to its location along the sea routes between the Japanese archipelago and the Chinese mainland. The large number of islands surrounding Mokpo have also served as a protective barrier, making the city less vulnerable to high tides and tsunamis. In the occupation era, large residential areas were built to accommodate the Japanese colonists, which are now the city's historic districts. The end of World War II and Korea's independence in 1945 were responsible for the city slowly losing its position as a host to major government organizations and wartime industries. This led to a reduction in the size of Mokpo, which is currently a mid-sized city of the Honam region.Sea

Mokpo has three harbors: one each for ferry service, trading and fishing. The main harbor is used to ferry customers and cargoes around nearby islands, while North harbor conducts ferry service to Nonghyup. Additionally, the newly built harbor is used for container shipping to China.
Over 80 sea-going lines have been available, notably for Heuksando, Hongdo and Jeju, as well as ferries linking Sinan county. In 2002, the first cruise-line to Shanghai was opened for operation,[78] however, bankruptcy concerns forced the discontinuance of the cruise line after only five months. In July 2004, another attempt to start a cruise route to Shanghai, with a newly designed, smaller boat, failed due to Chinese objections.[79]
The Mokpo coastal terminal was originally built during the 1980s, with the government beginning an update in 2003. The 30bn won, 4-story terminal opened in February 2007.[80] Mokpo coastal terminal is currently configured to divide coastal from international travel.
The newly built harbor in Mokpo has seen a growing number of cargoes since it opened in 2004. The harbor set a record for civil investment in a seaport in South Korea.[81] Currently, sea routes have been established for China, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia with municipal support.[82] In January 2011, Samsung electronics decided to choose Mokpo as their chief exporting harbor for merchandise from its factory in Gwangju.[83]

It was designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2009 and is under protection.

Off the coast of my Korean hometown, Gunsan, there's a cluster of a few islands that are connected to the mainland by bridges. The largest of these islands is Seonyudo which shares its name with an island in the Han River in Seoul. If you follow my blog, I wrote about this island in Seoul a few months ago. The two islands couldn't be more different. I went with a few friends to explore Seonyudo Gunsan. Check out the charms of this beautiful and somewhat rustic island.
