Scots band Travis reunite at Glasgow Horseshoe Bar 20 years on
They’ve described their album as the sound of the hangover from the Britpop party, a soul-searching comedown after an era of machismo, cigarettes and alcohol. After the swagger of Blur and Oasis, four young men from Glasgow delivered a pause for breath, a moment in music for gathering thoughts as a century ended and a seismic cultural movement gave way to whatever would come next. What came next was hugely influenced by an album of melodic, introspective songs written everywhere from the tenement closes of Glasgow , to the island of Cumbrae and a city in Israel, by a young man who grew up with his mum in a one-bedroom Glasgow flat. On Christmas Day on BBC Radio Scotland, I explore the cultural impact of what went on to become Travis’s multi-million-selling, multi-award-winning The Man Who, which shaped the careers of two of our biggest bands. In making the hour-long documentary, Travis: The Man Who at 20, I joined radio producer Amy Ferguson and followed in the footsteps of singer Fran Healy, bassist Dougie Payne, guitarist Andy Dunlop and drummer Neil Primrose from a dilapidated rehearsal rooms above a Glasgow pub to the most famous studio in the world, Abbey Road’s Studio 2, where The Beatles recorded. The show hears Killers’ Brandon Flowers credit Travis as the band who “gave us hope”, and Coldplay’s Chris Martin cite them as having “invented” his world-conquering stadium rock outfit. Travis also inspired a generation of young Scots to pick up a guitar. Singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald revealed she owes everything to The Man Who, having seen the band at T In The Park in 2000 in her teens. “I went into Biggars music shop in Glasgow and bought the music book of The Man Who,” said multi-million-selling singer Amy, famed for This Is The Life. “Turn was the first song I ever learned to play. That’s how I got into playing the guitar. Nothing had as much of a profound impact on me as that album did.” After a critical savaging and weak chart form, the band’s performance at that summer’s Glastonbury changed their fortunes, when their performance of then new single Why Does It Always Rain On Me coincided with a passing raincloud. The coincidence featured on the BBC coverage of the festival that night. Within a month, the album was at the top of the charts, where it spent nine weeks. Within 12 months, they returned to Glastonbury as headliners and won Best Band and Best Album at The Brits, with songwriter Healy going on to land an Ivor Novello award. I spoke to Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley about the pivotal part she played in reversing the band’s fortunes. “To be part of that defining moment in Travis’s history is quite something,” she said. “Those moments really give you something to talk about. This was a tipping point. It was like the Gods had suddenly said, ‘OK, this is what happens when you play this song.’ It got everybody talking about Travis.” The show includes never-before-heard demos of Fran penning much-loved h

The World's End Pub in Edinburgh - Belhaven The World's End Cask Ale & Black Scottish Stout
The World's End pub, right on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland! This pub has a great selection of Belhaven brews and cheap (at least by UK standards) scotch whiskies! In this video we check out The World's End Cask Ale, which is brewed by Belhaven and likely a beer they brew commercially, as well as the Black Scottish Stout, also on cask. Enjoy the video!
