Cycling - Riding Through Bryce Canyon National Park in Southern Utah Canyons
Running low on time, I didn't know if I'd have time to take you into Bryce Canyon National Park. After waiting till the last moment and listening to my gut, it became clear to me that I was supposed to make the extra miles...even though it was later in the afternoon.
I totally made the right decision, and ran into Dave and Jay. They run the wagon tours, there at Bryce Canyon National Park...and were super cool people!

Bryce Canyon National Park is a National Park located in southwestern Utah in the United States. The major feature of the park is Bryce Canyon, which despite its name, is not a canyon, but a collection of giant natural amphitheaters along the eastern side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. The red, orange, and white colors of the rocks provide spectacular views for park visitors. Bryce sits at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park. The rim at Bryce varies from 8,000 to 9,000 feet (2,400 to 2,700 m).
The Bryce Canyon area was settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s and was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who homesteaded in the area in 1874. The area around Bryce Canyon became a National Monument in 1923 and was designated as a National Park in 1928. The park covers 35,835 acres (55.992 sq mi; 14,502 ha; 145.02 km2) and receives relatively few visitors compared to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon, largely due to its remote location.
The national park lies within the Colorado Plateau geographic province of North America and straddles the southeastern edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau west of the Paunsaugunt Fault (Paunsaugunt is Paiute for home of the beaver). Park visitors arrive from the plateau part of the park and look over the plateau's edge toward a valley containing the fault and the Paria River just beyond it (Paria is Paiute for muddy or elk water). The edge of the Kaiparowits Plateau bounds the opposite side of the valley.
Bryce Canyon was not formed from erosion initiated from a central stream, meaning it technically is not a canyon. Instead headward erosion has excavated large amphitheater-shaped features in the Cenozoic-aged rocks of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. This erosion exposed delicate and colorful pinnacles called hoodoos that are up to 200 feet (60 m) high. A series of amphitheaters extends more than 20 miles (30 km) north-to-south within the park. The largest is Bryce Amphitheater, which is 12 miles (19 km) long, 3 miles (5 km) wide and 800 feet (240 m) deep. A nearby example of amphitheaters with hoodoos in the same formation but at a higher elevation, is in Cedar Breaks National Monument, which is 25 miles (40 km) to the west on the Markagunt Plateau.
Rainbow Point, the highest part of the park at 9,105 feet (2,775 m), is at the end of the 18-mile (29 km) scenic drive. From there, Aquarius Plateau, Bryce Amphitheater, the Henry Mountains, the Vermilion Cliffs and the White Cliffs can be seen. Yellow Creek, where it exits the park in the north-east section, is the lowest part of the park at 6,620 feet (2,020 m).

Red Canyon, Dixie National Forest , Utah, United States, North America
Red Canyon is located along Scenic Byway 12, just 9 miles from Bryce Canyon. Passing through it is required to get to Bryce Canyon National Park from the west. From the east, stay on Highway 12, past the junction of highways 12 and 63 for 9 miles, to find Red Canyon. As part of Dixie National Forest, rather than a national park or monument, there are no entry fees to drive through or hike in Red Canyon. Red Canyon, a spectacular oasis of rock nested in a vast forest known to locals as Dixie. The two-million acre, 170 mile long forest ranges from Red Canyon's arid desertscape of sandstone hoodoos to a lush high altitude forest on Cedar Mountain. When thinking of Southern Utah, many think of red sandstone. Red Canyon has this in abundance. Cooler summers and crisp winters characterize the Red Canyon recreation area. Red Canyon is set at 7400' and provides a prime area for cross country skiing, cool summer hiking, horseback riding and ATV trails. The Red Canyon Visitor Center was completed in the winter of 2004. It is located along Highway 12 and is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Information is offered inside on hiking, ATV trails, 4WD trails, horse trails and the beautiful paved bike trail that runs through Red Canyon. There are some fun hikes in Red Canyon including the Birds Eye Trail. This is a moderate .8 mile hike that takes hikers up close to red rock formations. The 3 mile Losee Canyon Trail takes hikers past some select rock formations.Like Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon is open year-round. Southwestern Utah is the ideal place for year-round recreation. The seasonal Red Canyon Campground is shaded by ponderosa pines, junipers and Douglas firs. The 35 site campground usually closes the first day of October and opens again May first. The charge for camping is $11 per day. There are tables, grills, group sites, flush toilets, showers and a few RV pull throughs.

Bryce Canyon ATV Adventures
A condensed version of our 3-hour guided tour from ATV Adventures. None of us had ever ridden before so we figured a guided tour was the best option for our first adventure. No ATVs are allowed in the National Park so you ride a few miles west on public trails and riverbed, but the scenery is still spectacular with many hoodoos and formations similar to the canyon.
Word to the wise. You probably have never been so dusty as you will be after a few hours in the desert on an ATV. If you don't have a bandanna, spend the dollar and buy one at the rental desk. Also bring water. You stop a couple times to stretch, hydrate and take pictures.

Bryce Canyon Natl Park Scenic Drive
We were first greeted by hoodoos not at Bryce Canyon but rather at the Red Canyon in the Dixie National Forest. That was just a small sample of what was to come. When we finally arrived at Bryce Canyon National Park, the hoodoos and canyon landscape seemed unreal.

THUNDER MOUNTAIN // Mountain Bike Trail near Bryce Canyon National Park (Utah)
This is Isabelle riding Thunder Mountain, near Bryce Canyon National Park. And this is an extract from our Second Month on the Road blog post:
After visiting a few major points of interest (Yellowstone National Park, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Bryce) and after riding a few major mountain bike trails, we will go ahead and say that we rather much ride our bikes! Don’t get us wrong; these places were AMAZING, but it felt somewhat like going to the mall on a weekend (even if we were visiting off-season): you get there, drive your car to consume viewpoints after viewpoints, wait in line for your turn to shot the same pictures as everyone else, and keep doing this until you checked all the flyer’s points of interest or until your body can’t take it anymore (for some reason going to the mall is the worst for my body). Just like your favorite beer taste MUCH better after a bike ride, seeing nature gets much, much better during our bike rides. We climb, sweat, improve, descend steep lines, drop, jump, almost fall but save it, get emotional, it’s fun, so much fun. And while doing this, we get to ride AMAZING landscape & terrain, very similar to the neighboring national parks. We feel closer to nature, we feel we’re lucky to be there, to have it for us at this very moment. It’s hard to describe, but life’s good when you live it. You know what we mean if, you too, you are having fun out there; paragliding, kayaking, backcountry skiing, climbing, basejumping, … it doesn’t matter how you live your passion, but living your passion out there make you feel like it’s the best day of your life. There were many days like that in the last month…
Southern Utah to Arizona Family Road Trip - Bryce Canyon to Sedona
We took a family adventure in July and ventured on a road trip from Bryce Canyon in Utah down to Seodna, Arizona. Backpacking, camping, hiking, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, arches, horseshoe bend, horseback riding, grand canyon....we did it all. The kids had a blast and built some great memories.
