Skagway Hike and Float | Alaska Cruise Excursion
On our Alaska cruise in Skagway, Alaska we decided to do a hike and float tour excursion with Skagway Shore Tours. The hike on the Chilkoot Trail with a raft float down the Taiya River was the perfect way to explore nature in this beautiful Alaskan town.
We hiked two miles up (and we do mean UP) the Chilkoot Trail. The elevation was so steep in a few place they have added steps to help tourists like us make it through. Can you believe men used to do this trail with tons of gear strapped to their back in order to cross to the gold rich areas of the Yukon? It was crazy! The float down the river after the hike was the perfect recovery while watching beautiful scenery pass by.
Thanks for watching!

The Red Onion Saloon, in Skagway, Alaska
The Red Onion Saloon originally opened for business in 1898 at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, and was considered Skagway’s most exclusive bordello at the time. It was built by planks cut by Captain William Moore, the founder of Skagway, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
A Seattle saloon man, Peter Lawson, built the Red Onion during the fall of 1898 and opened it as Skagway's largest dance hall and saloon. Upstairs was a brothel, a higher class parlor than the adjacent cribs on Yokohama Row and Paradise Alley.
The Red Onion was moved in 1914
with one horse from Sixth and State Street to
its current Broadway location. Interestingly, the
Onion was dragged around the corner backwards and the front and back of the building had to be removed in order to switch them.

Alaska Tour - Skagway, AK - Stop #6
Today we made it thru Carcross all the way to Skagway, Alaska!
The drive had spectacular scenery with lakes like mirrors with mountains in the distance! Jeannie took several pictures thru the windows of the scenery and our caravan of 25 RV's. To get into Skagway, you need to descend from over 3000 feet elevation to sea level over a 7 mile decline which was quite long and steep, but we all made it fine!
In Skagway, we were there for the 4th of July Celebrations including a parade down Main Street and Fireworks! We also went out to dinner numerous time at different old time bars, and then to the 'Days of '98' Show' featuring a play about 'Soapy Smith' and Can Can Dancers!
We also took some time to go see and climb the Chilkoot Trail. This was the famous trail many hearty souls climbed, in the winter, up a steep mountain during the Klondike Gold Rush! Because so many were dying, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police starting requiring them to carry a year's worth of food, or 2000 pounds up the mountain. This required even the strongest hikers to take over 30-40 trips up and back to get all the stuff hand carried over the mountain!

The ferry becomes part of the adventure as we head north through the Wrangell Narrows - the single most difficult navigational stretch on the Passage. Petersburg is Alaska's Little Norway and Southeast's busiest processing port, home to the area's largest fishing fleet. Train to the Gold Rush... (White pass and Yukon Railroad, Skagway Alaska)
This is the story of the Great Alaskan Goldrush, and how the White pass and Yukon railway was born.
Before we head on this historic journey across the planes of Alaska with amazing views of mountains and deep valleys - lets roll the intro
The year was 1896, George Carmack, skookum Jim and Dawson charlie struck gold
...but just enough gold for the Seattle newspapers to catch wind of the discovery, and spread headlines across the nation - sparking the Alaskan Goldrush
Let's travel back in time and embark on this epic journey that 100,000 men endured over a century ago on foot.
These men gathered every dime they had, left their families and strived to be among the first to reach Klondike - east of the Alaskan border - in pursuit of their share of the gold. The journey, however, was treacherous.
The 2 primary routes to the riches were the Chilkoot trail (shorter but daunting compared to the White Pass Trail, which had its own fair share of perils.
The steel cantilever bridge built in 1901 was the worlds tallest at the time and was operational until 1969
The train through its winding 67-mile course climbs to an elevation of 2865 feet. Back in the day, men had to summit this with literally 2,000 pounds of supplies - a law imposed by Canadian authorities.
With the stampede of hopefuls, who knew absolutely nothing of surviving the Canadian wilderness or hiking thousands of miles, the Canadian Government took measures to ensure their survival. Therefore in order to be granted passage they needed years worth of supplies with them.
Gear such as 150 lbs. of Bacon, 400 lbs of flour, 15 lbs. Salt, 2 pairs heavy trousers a Coffee pot and 1 dozen heavy wool socks...all in all totaling to 2000 lbs of supplies.
Our conductor gave us insights as to how thousands of men tried to accomplish this.
They had to either make over 30 trips back and forth in order to haul all of the supplies, making their entire journey approximately 2,500 miles to the end of the trail. Some hired help, some used pack animals, but no option was quick or easy or cheap.
30,000 made it Bennet, BC. What laid ahead was 500miles of frozen Yukon river, between the men and the goldfields.
Through the course of the winter, people hand-built rafts, Finally as the winters mellowed on May of 1898 over 7000 rafts set sail.
The hazardous rapids along the Miles Canyon led to the demise of thousands of these hand-built rafts, several hundred people died on this last leg of the journey.
All in all, of the original 100,000 men that began the journey, about 30,000 reached the final destination of Dawson City, no more than 4,000 found gold, but only a few hundred actually struck it rich.
The idea of the White Pass and Yukon train was sparked from the vast dangers and time it took for men to complete their journey, The construction was completed in 1901, and has stood the test of time granting us the luxury to be in this moment and ride the very train.
