One of the best preserved byzantine monasteries in Greece, is the byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas in Boeotia, Greece. The Monastery, located near the village of Distomo on the hills of Helicon mountain, has survived many generations since its foundation by the hermit St. Loukas in 953 A.D. Apart from being among the few monasteries that survived more than 1000 years, the architecture of the monastery as well as its frescoes are unique. It is by far, a magical journey into history and in times where art and culture flourished.

It feels like we just got back from our last excursion to the Peloponnese, and here we are leaving again, this time for two days in Delphi (del-FEE). The cold mist of the morning hung over the mountains as we drove north through the Attic peninsula. We started at the monastery of Ossios Loukas. Loukas was a holy man who founded a Greek Orthodox church in the first century CE after spending a few years living on a small platform at the top of a column. Following his death, his fellow monks expanded the monastery and dedicated it to his memory. It's an exquisite example of Byzantine architecture and art situated in the midst of gorgeous countryside.

Osios Loukas is a historic walled monastery situated 4 km from Distomo, 18 km from Arachova and 163 km from Athens in Sterea or Central Greece. It is one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art, listed on Unesco's World Heritage Sites, the largest of three monasteries surviving from the Middle Byzantine period in Greece. It is situated on a scenic site on the slopes of Mount Helicon on a lush landscape. The monastery was recently renovated and has a hostel.

The Monastery of Ossios Loukas, which was founded in the 10th century A.D. by Venerable, who was also known as St. Luke, not the Evangelist of the Gospel of Saint Luke, but a hermit who died in 953.
It is said that St. Luke died at age 84, here in Boeotia. The main shrine of the monastery is the tomb of St. Luke, originally situated in the vault, but later placed at the juncture of the two churches.

Η Μονή Οσίου Λουκά του 11ου αιώνα , η Αγιά-Σοφιά της Ρούμελης είναι χτισμένη σε υψόμετρο 430 μ. στο Στείρι Βοιωτίας. Αποτελεί ένα από τα σημαντικότερα μνημεία της μεσοβυζαντινής τέχνης και αρχιτεκτονικής και περιλαμβάνεται στην κατάλογο μνημείων παγκόσμιας κληρονομιάς της UNESCO. Η ζωή του μοναστηριού από την ίδρυσή του μέχρι και σήμερα ταυτίζεται με την ιστορία του Ελληνικού Έθνους. Τους δύο πρώτους αιώνες της ύπαρξής της η Μοναστική κοινότητα αποτελούσε πηγή Χριστιανικής πίστης και θείας ευλογίας. Στην Επανάσταση του 1821 η Μονή έγινε το επαναστατικό ορμητήριο της Ρούμελης. Ο Δεσφινιώτης Ησαΐας, Δεσπότης Σαλώνων, ευλόγησε στις 27 Μαρτίου 1821 τα ρουμελιώτικα όπλα και κήρυξε επίσημα την Επανάσταση κατά των Οθωμανών. Το ιερό λείψανο του Οσίου Λουκά του Στειριώτη ιδρυτή της Μονής βρίσκεται στο μοναστήρι, όπου έφθασε το 1986 από την Βενετία και δεκάδες επισκέπτες από την Ελλάδα, και όχι μόνο, εισρέουν καθημερινά για να το προσκυνήσουν.
