RUSSIA: ST PETERSBURG: LUXURY FUR TRADE HITS HARD TIMES
Eng/Russ/Nat
In Soviet times foreign sales of fur were so lucrative it was dubbed soft gold.
A decade later, the luxury trade has fallen on such hard times that there is little money to pay the industry's workers, let alone feed the mink and polar foxes bred for their pelts.
Poorly fed animals produce poor skins and now even the Russians prefer to buy imported fur, forcing the domestic industry into a sharp decline.
At the Sosnovsky farm, 150 kilometres from St Petersburg, these polar foxes are being bred for their highly prized fur.
It's a long-established business in a country where animal rights activists have never managed to gain a foothold.
As in Soviet times the industry still gets state backing - fur farms only make money once a year following the annual slaughter and need cash for daily expenses.
But the hard-pressed government has had to curtail its hand-outs and now the fur farms are suffering.
There are few resources and undernourished animals are producing inferior fur.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Everywhere now things have got worse. The food situation has got worse and the equipment here. It's very rarely repaired. We lose out because it's expensive and we always have to save money.
SUPERCAPTION: Larissa Bugaeyeva, fur farm worker
The fur farm sends its animals to this slaughter house, where the pelts are removed, cured and prepared for sale.
Workers here receive 150 dollars a month, the equivalent cost of one animal skin.
It's scant remuneration for such an unpleasant job.
The stench of rotting flesh hangs in the air and the constant handling of fur causes skin complaints.
But Russia's high unemployment leaves these workers few other options, especially now that the slaughter house's future is also in jeopardy.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Previously, they (the government) gave us credit so that we could exist. We only got money once a year when the fur is ready for sale. They're giving us credit now but for huge interest payments and it's impossible to survive with those sort of percentages.
SUPER CAPTION: Vera Bogdan, Director of Slaughter House
During its glory days, St Petersburg's international fur auction was packed with buyers from around the world.
Now it's half empty.
The world fashion industry tends to favour pelts from Scandinavia, Finland and even England, where the latest farming and curing techniques ensure optimum quality.
Those foreign buyers who do come here are attracted by the bargain basement prices.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The Russian is not so expensive as the Scandinavian fur, so it's good for a better price in America. So it's a better priced garment so more women can wear the fur.
SUPER CAPTION: Erwin Sidebin, New York fur broker
But in modern-day Russia, where only the wealthy can afford to buy a new fur, price isn't a consideration - in fact among the nouveaux riches - expense is considered one of the reasons to buy.
There again, the rich don't want to wear home-produced fur which doesn't have the snob appeal of an imported product.
But Western brokers believe that once the country has got over it's economic crisis and there is more money to spend the Russian market could be one of the most lucrative in the world.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Everybody needs a fur hat, not only the rich but the average people. Now it's a very difficult time. Russia is undergoing a crisis, an economic crisis, people aren't getting paid, so we have to be patient but I think that after the crisis is passed I think the fur business will be very good in Russia.
SUPER CAPTION: Leon Rathaus, New York Fur broker
But Russia's future is uncertain and it's economic recovery may take several years.

FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7
As Russia’s cultural hub, St. Petersburg delights millions of tourists every year. Founded by Peter the Great, the city was renamed Petrograd during World War I then Leningrad upon the death of Lenin. It became St. Petersburg again when the Soviet Union collapsed. Although the city’s identity was forged by all of these eras, it was the 900-day Nazi siege during World War II that left the deepest scars. Today, survivors of the siege or their descendants can be found in almost every family.
Historians estimate that around 1 million civilians – but perhaps many more – died during the siege of the city known then as Leningrad. The courage of the inhabitants, known as the Blokadniki (the besieged), and the bravery of those who fought on the front still make Russians proud. Life in St. Petersburg is punctuated by ceremonies commemorating the siege, which began in September 1941, and its inhabitants still bear the scars of this dark era.

A pleasant drive in Saint Petersburg - Приятного путешествия в Петере
Here we have a very nice car ride through the centre of Saint Petersburg! I travelled from the airport to the Baltic sea at Przymorskaya finishing the journey at the Park Inn. I have used as the backing music the title A Pleasant Drive in Saint Petersburg from the James Bond film Goldeneye.
For those that cannot be bothered to watch the full 20 minute film here are the highlights!
Saint Petersburg is located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea.
In Russian literature and informal documents the Saint (Санкт-) is usually omitted, leaving Petersburg. In common parlance Russians may drop -burg (-бург) as well, leaving only Peter (Питер, pronounced as Piter.
Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on 27 May 1703. From 1713 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918, Saint Petersburg was the capital of Russia. In 1918 the central government bodies moved from Saint Petersburg (then named Petrograd) to Moscow. It is Russia's second largest city after Moscow with 4.6 million inhabitants. Saint Petersburg is a major European cultural centre, and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea.
Saint Petersburg is often described as the most Western city of Russia. Among cities of the world with over one million people, Saint Petersburg is the northernmost. The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg is also home to The Hermitage, the largest art museum in the world. A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg.
The music comes from the film GoldenEye and was composed by Éric Serra. It was released on 14 November 1995. Serra composed and performed a number of synthesizer tracks, including the version of the James Bond Theme that plays during the gun barrel sequence, while John Altman and David Arch provided the more traditional symphonic music. Serra's score is often criticized by Bond fans, and is considered the farthest departure from a traditional Bond score in the series history. The producers later hired John Altman to provide the music for the tank chase in St. Petersburg. Serra's original track for that sequence can still be found on the soundtrack as A Pleasant Drive In St. Petersburg.

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region and the sites and give a pretty good idea where future films are going to come from! Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Vladimir Putin Lifestyle 2018 ,Quotes,Networth,Vladimir Putin Biography,Houses,Hobbies,Caree,
Vladimir Putin is the current President of Russia. He is into his fourth term as the President. He is considered as an autocrat with little respect for human
rights and has been accused of ordering assassinations of his critics and opponents.
Besides being a President, he has also served as the Prime Minister and was a foreign intelligence officer before entering the politics. He was born in
a middle class family and had a dream of becoming an intelligence officer since childhood.
Vladimir Putin realized this dream and entered the ‘KGB’ the Russian intelligence agency. He was posted in various places as an undercover agent. For a larger part of his life,
he served at the agency. Eventually, he got involved in political affairs of the country and resigned from ‘KGB’.
He then, diligently worked for the welfare of the country and its people, which soon earned him recognition. Finally, when the then President of Russia
Boris Yeltsin decided to step down from his post,
Vladimir Putin found no better successor than Putin and appointed him as the president of the country. A few months later, the elections took place and there too
he emerged as the winner. The deft handling of issues with admirable efficiency led to his re-election for a second term to the office of President of Russia.
Since as per Russian constitution, Vladimir Putin was ineligible to run for presidency for the third consecutive term, Dmitry Medvedev ran for the office of the
President and Putin became the Prime Minister. In 2012, when Medvedev's term ended, Putin once again became the President for the third time.
In 2018, he was re-elected for his fourth-term as a President.
Vladimir Putin was born to Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin and Maria Ivanovna Putina on 7th October, 1952, in Saint Petersberg, Soviet Union.
During 1960-68, he attended the ‘Primary School No. 193’ located at Baskov Lane. He then joined the ‘High School No. 281’, and even took interest in
sports like sambo (a martial art form) and judo.
In 1970, he enrolled at the ‘Leningrad State University’ Law Department, and as a student he joined the ‘Communist Party of the Soviet Union’.
During the same time, he encountered the Russian politician Anatoly Sobchak.
He worked on his thesis entitled ‘The Most Favored Nation Trading in International Law’, and in 1975, he graduated from the university.
During the period 1985-90, he operated in the Dresden city of East Germany as an undercover agent. Vladimir’s hard work earned him the position of lieutenant
colonel and eventually he became the senior assistant to the head of the department in the intelligence office.
In 1990, he travelled back to Leningrad and was appointed to the ‘Leningrad State University’ as the rector, in which capacity he handled international relations.
He chaired the ‘Committee for International Relations’ at St. Petersburg City Hall in 1991, and a few years later, also joined the St. Petersburg City
Government as the Deputy Chairman. Soon after joining the City Hall, he resigned from his post at the ‘KGB’.
He shifted to Moscow in the year 1996, along with his family and there he was appointed to the ‘Presidential Property Management Directorate’ as the Deputy Chief.
The following year, he joined office as the Presidential Executive Office as the Deputy Chief of Staff and also Chief of Main Control Directorate.

The House of Leningrad Trade is the oldest department store in St. Petersburg, dating to the 1900's, being opened in 1909. This was extended in 1912/13
In 1918, the trading house was converted into a first state department store.
During the Second World War and the Siege of Leningrad, the building was badly damaged, but after the war it was restored. In 1945-1946, it housed the Central department store sales. Since 1965, DLT began to specialize in children's products and gradually developed into the best family department store of the city.

Travelling the Trans-Siberian - life
From Moscow to the eastern borders of China, the world's longest railway line - the Trans-Siberian, stretches for more than 9,000 kilometres; a truly great railway journey - in this edition of Russian Life.
At midnight every other day, a Rossiya train leaves Moscow for a week-long trip to Vladivostok. It is an extraordinary trip and many come from far and wide to do it.
This is the longest train journey that one can make, said English tourist Robert Bird. And you just have to do it, because it's there! I'm happy sitting in the train, looking at the scenery, and going to places that I've never been to before. I just find it so fascinating!
It is a home away from home for hundreds of passengers who sleep, eat, enjoy the limited comfort and try to have a good time during their days on board the train.
Irina Savina, one of the train's conductors said:
Very few passengers do the whole journey from Moscow to Vladivostok in a single trip, and those who do should be prepared mentally and physically - a whole week on a train might not be easy. But we provide everything necessary to make it an enjoyable travel.
In the first and second classes, there are individual compartments that accommodate two and four passengers respectively.
This is a popular mode of transport for tourists and businessmen alike who shuttle between Russia's major cities on trains rather than planes.
There are dozens of stations between Moscow and Vladivostok allowing passengers to stretch their legs for a few minutes and stock up on food and drinks.
Factfile: The Trans-Siberian
* A first class ticket from Moscow to Vladivostok on a Rossiya train costs around 1000 euros, including daily meal service. The third class is 315 euros
* First class passengers can order their meals to be delivered in their compartments or have it at a dining car
* There's a hot shower in one of the train carriages. It costs 200 roubles (5 euros)
* Train personnel is helpful and attentive but doesn't always speak foreign languages
* All train schedules in Russia use Moscow time; the time difference between Moscow and Vladivostok is seven hours
Many tourists prefer to visit some of the most interesting cities along the track before continuing their Trans-Siberian journey.
Some of the most passionate travellers ride in the cheaper third class carriages: known as platzkart.
Here people from many different backgrounds mix together in an open carriage throughout their odyssey.
Inna Kryazhevskih who was travelling to Kirov said: A train journey is a good time to reflect on something, to think of the things we never have time for in our daily lives.
Dasha Kryazhevskih who was going the same way added: Sometimes you sleep a lot, sometimes you read, or do something creative - we made some toys and beaded jewellery while travelling on this train.
Vladimir Kosinov, the Train Master, said:
You can learn a lot about Russia by crossing it from Moscow to Vladivostok on this train. If you observe other passengers, especially Russians, if you get to know them then you'll understand many things about our way of life and the mysterious Russian soul.
Lots of people decide to stop in the historic Siberian city of Yekaterinburg and then a few days further down the line in Irkutsk where they can see Baikal, the world's deepest lake.
From there they can head south to Mongolia and China or continue their eastward journey to Vladivostok, Russia's main port city on the Pacific Ocean.
Whatever the destination, for those with a spirit for adventure, the Trans-Siberian trip is a Russian speciality not to miss.

Napoleon made a major misstep when, following a dispute with Tsar Alexander I, he launched an invasion of the tsar's realm in 1812. The Napoleon campaign was a catastrophe. Although Napoleon's Grande Armée made its way to Moscow, the Russians' scorched earth strategy prevented the invaders from living off the country. In the bitterly cold Russian weather, thousands of French troops were ambushed and killed by Russian peasant.
